A: Looks good. Brown and clean with a thin, off-white head.
S: The label isn't lying. Powerful smokey aroma with bacon showing up clearly. Smells more like breakfast than beer.
T: Smoke blasts the tastebuds hard. Didn't notice the bacon as much, but the combination of smoke and malt wound up tasting kinda like a band aide. Not something I enjoyed.
M: Moderately full, the smokiness made it seem fairly big. Good carbonation.
O: This definitely wasn't my bag. The chemical/band aide affect in the taste left a lot to be desired. Pleasent to smell, not so much to taste. Didn't finish the bottle.

Tried hard but couldn't enjoy it. I don't know if the word Bacon on the label messed with my head but the first hickory filled sip had me thinking a slice of bacon had slipped into the bottle. Had to pour out the rest and move on to a beer of known quality and/or likability.

Big thanks to brew3crew for the bottle. Cheers Jason

The body is a rather dirty, cloudy golden raisin color. Two finger white head recedes rather quickly. Sparse lacing left clinging to the glass.

The aroma starts to improve my opinion from the appearance. The smoke is not heavy but very much front and center. A nice hickory smoke smell blends fairly well with the heavy caramel flavors just behind.

The flavor is a constant back and forth. The smokiness is very pleasant but the sweetness becomes too much after a while. If there was just more dark malt flavor to contrast the tremendous sweetness we would be in business. In the end the smoke just cannot compete.

Medium bodied, lively carbonation. The finish is on the longer side but is in no way excessive.

Just not the beer for me. I can appreciate the concept and the attempt, the final result leaves me wanting more than it can deliver. One pour is enough and then time to move on.

This beer was picked up at a local stop and rob. The beer was served in a pint glass.

Appearance: The beer poured a murky dark amber coloration. The head was a thick beige that resolves to a ring of foam. No lacing noted.

Smell: The aroma of the beer is loaded with smokey bacon. A nice maple note couples with the meaty bacon.

Taste: A sweet maple smoked bacon, starts very strongly smokdy and mellows out.

Mouthfeel / Drinkability: The body of the beer is just shy of medium. I think a little less fizzyness would improve the drinkability. I would certainly grab another bottle of this should I see it great bang for the buck at $5.00 a bomber.

22 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a mug

A - It is a dark rust color with amber highlights. I normal pour provided four inches of tan head.

S - It smells like a rauchbier. I get that wonderful aroma of smoked pork. I get some caramel malt as well.

T - It's got a pretty good smokey flavor to it. I get some sweet caramel malt in the middle, and it has a dry, bitter finish.

M - Medium with some prickly carbonation.

O - It has the makings of a great rauchbier. I loved the aroma, and the initial flavor was good. I didn't like the dry, bitter finish.

Picked this up in a trade, thanks for opening my eyes to some of Ohio's finest.
A - cloudy muddy brown, not much head, after it sat a bit, nothing but an oil slick head.
S - sweet smokyness.
T - like the label says, bacon, pretty much through the whole smell and taste,
D - if your up for a big full flavored beer, this is it, but to imagine having a few of these would be rough.
glad I git to try this, but pretty rough to put down after a few sips.

Much like drinking a pork chop, the sweet and savory flavor of bock bier sets the stage for the rolling mesquite and hickory character that rolls across the complex and malty lager. Listermann brewers have a huge advantage by picking two highly agreeable styles to frame their Friar Backon smoked bock- the bock beer and the rauchbier.

Not exactly fried bacon, but upon the pour, the lager is impressive. Brilliantly clear with mahogany and cedar hues and a dense marshallowy froth of khaki coloration. Rich smoke and molasses waft onto the senses with hints of pepper, dark fruit, char and coffee. To taste, its the malt that reigns supreme- coating the tongue with savory and elegant brown sugar, toffee, molasses, coffee, nuttiness and toasted breads.

As the sweetness tightens and its sweetness begins to dissolve, the toasted dryness of malt stands tall with toasted grains, pepper, nutty flavors- all inviting the strong smoke flavors that quickly charge onto the palate. Semi-sweet in finish, a cola-like flavor permeates the smoke and offers the unique taste of well marinated meats with the grilled taste of stone fruit and a hint of spiced rum in finish.

Medium-full on the palate, the beer carries a complexity and weight that suggests a bigger, imperial even, strength. Warm and toasty in finish, the beer lingers long with spice cake maltiness and that persistent whimsy of campfire.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy orange/amber/brown color with a half inch light tan head that fizzled away pretty quickly. Not much lacing at all. Aroma is pretty much all smoked meats/malt (bacon), along with a bit of wood. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes mostly like smoked malt/meats, and there's also some wood and an apple juice flavor noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and coating with a decent amount of carbonation. I think it's a solid brew, it's definitely worth trying.
