Reviewed from notes - drank in early 2015. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Tampa Bay Beer Co. snifter.

A: Very dark brown, essentially opaque, with minimal visible carbonation and a thin tan head that fades very quickly.

S: Bourbon, chocolate malts and wooden oak. Mild vanilla, leather and anise with bits of coffee in the background.

T: Bourbon and chocolate up front – a nice rich milk chocolate. Woody oak tannins with associated vanilla, and roasted sticky malts. Aged leather, and a minimal amount of coffee-roasted malts. Some hop and roasty bitterness near the swallow, and it finishes with more chocolate and bourbon that lingers for a few beats after the swallow.

M: Full-bodied and pretty thick – not quite the Cigar City extremes, but in the neighborhood. A surprisingly high amount of crackly carbonation for the style; it seems to fit this beer (i.e., not overly carbonated) but it is more than most of its competitors. Residual malt sugars here for sure, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. Alcohol presence seems about typical for style.

O: Truly world class? No…not at all. But a very good BBA Imperial Stout, made more remarkable for being distributed in 12 oz. bottles. This would likely be in regular rotation in the fridge if it were available here (though I forget how much I paid for it; that would factor in too). It's 2+ years old at this point - and unfortunately I didn’t try it fresh – but I feel pretty certain age hasn't hurt it at all. A thumbs up from me for sure.

Another beer thanks to crapturds (reddit), intersting looking beer, 2012 vintage so some age, I hope it still has all the nice characters.

Pours a super dark colored fizzy small head that fades fairly quickly, jet black beer, no light getting through this puppy. decent legs on the sides as well.

Nose is loaded with bourbon, wow bourbon, lots of barrel and barrel juice, vanilla, buttery oak, etc, as well as a fudgey cocoa and dark chocolate, caramel, hint of a fluffy nougat, again more vanilla, cocoa, mild roasty char, with hint coffee like roast.

Taste brings lots more barrel, a big buttery oak note, very buttery oak, and lots of vanilla, so much barrel character it's ridiculous! Also lots of bourbon, nice sweet candy bourbon note, with a little tingly warming fairly hot booze, even after a couple years on it. Nice fudgey dark chocolate, baker's choc and cocoa, mild creamy note with that. Also a hint of a roasty char but that seems to have mellowed out a lot from what it probably was. Also a little black malt, little fluffy nougat carafa like note, and some caramel as well, and fairly sweet. Finish is sticky and a bit sweet, bit more warming booze, more baker's choc, fudgey notes, more bourbon and buttery oak barrel as well lingering nicely, with a touch more roast.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, decent carb but could have used a bit more, mild fudgey and chewy and creamy, some warming tingly booze.

Overall quite nice, as a big fan of bourbon and buttery vanilla oak I really liked that aspect. The malts were pretty nice too, I wonder if it's over roasty fresh but that aspect mellowed nicely, unlike the booze which is still fairly prominent. But quite a tasty beer! Not sure why it's rated so low.

Had back to back with 2011. This one has a markedly different appearance form the 2011 which looked less like a stout. This one forms a thin dark tan head on more of a jet black body. Aroma is a bit mild with a very distinct earthy aroma with coffee and roasted malts. Some vanilla notes as well. Flavor follows with a mellow and semi sweet bourbon presence with a background of dark chocolate, oak, vanilla and roasted malts. Full body and light carbonation. Very interesting how different years 2011 and 2012 are.

Thanks to Chris K in Cincinnati for sending me this one.

Picked up in a Cincinnati Kroger, about 18 bucks for a 4 pack. A bit high and no nice wax on these like the pictures of prior year brewings.

Pours about as dark as dark gets, just a hair of brown hues break through at the rims. Even the pour is nearly pitch black. There's a bit of a tan head but it has a sort of fake head fizz sound and looks rather bad, would be better with no head at all.

Molasses, raises, hints of vanilla and oak. I'm not getting the chocolate or coffee often seen in these stouts nor am I getting oak aromas.

This beer takes on a rather sweet stout side. Again chocolate while here is way in the back and coffee just isn't really showing up to me. What I do get is a lot of floral hops, oak, vanilla, raisins and prunes. This is not as big and dark in flavor as the beer looks.

A rather thin body given I would put the ABV in the 10% range. This isn't syrupy nor is there any body from carbonation.

This is a nice beer, but given the price I wont' be buying again. If there were a style for bourbon barrel american imperial stout, this would score a D- if not even an F. This style just has so many amazing examples and this falls into the home brew levels. Still I love this style and I don't score to style. I'm 'happy with this beer and I'll try again.
