Poured a thick, dark brown with a little white head. It smelled of a mix of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and perhaps molasses. The taste was the same creamy mixture brought by the smells, but finishing with much more molasses. It felt a little thinner than it appeared but still a full medium body. It was pretty drinkable, but was still heavy enough to be better as a dessert-type brew.

Business in Flint gave me a chance to do a “pubcrawl across Michigan.” Had to make this my first stop when I saw this beer was a 2003 GABF Gold Medalist.
Yes! Creamy and roasty, not oily at all. Despite a good coffee flavor, the taste is somehow “light.” Its dark stout head just seems to add to the chewy texture. Its bitterness is listed as only 30 IBU's. Worth the trip to discover this roomy brewpub/restaurant.

Pours a deep, dark brown, that looks black, with a tan head of poor retention. Roasted barley aromas, with hints of dark chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Smooth and creamy in the front, makes way to a more spicy and bitter finish. In the back its bitter of dark chocolate. With a medium body and light carbonation it goes down smooth and refreshingly.

It is hard to rate this beer since I am not used to drinking this style. It pours and looks like a coke from a can. The taste is so mellow and well balanced with roasted coffee and peanut butter flavors and hop bitterness. The body is thin but the great tastes make up for it. Definitely British in style – at times nondescript but irresistible.
This is a GABF gold winner in 2003 and I can see why.

I poured into a pint glass to a huge brown head. It is garnet/dark brown in color. There is not much on the nose, hints of coffee and chocolate. It tastes burnt. I get the coffee and the sweetness. It coats my tongue. It is a good beer, but not right up my alley style wise.

A- poured the typical stout color. nice frothy tan head that left a decent amount of lacing.

S- a roasty malt scent. what a stout should smell.

T- a little fruit from the yeast. has a slight chocolate taste. was hoping for more of a sweetness coming from the lactose but nope.

M- medium bodied. just a slight more carbonation than i would like but nothing crazy.

Drinkability- would buy this again.

Overall- and this is an award winner how??? yeah it's good but nothing that good. i tried left hand's milk stout a couple weeks ago at a tasting and thought it blew this beer away. this seemed more of a basic stout than a cream stout. good but nothing great.

A-Deep,dark brown/black with ruby highlights. A thin tan head reduced to a ring of retention and left decent lace.

S-Nothing overwhelming, a bit of light roasted malt and a hint of licorice.

T-The flavour on the palate makes up for the lack of aroma. Rich, roasty malt with an underlying sweetness. Hints of cocoa and coffee and a tangy ending.

M-Medium body with lingering roasted malt bitterness.

D-Nice stuff for sure, but is it worthy of a GABF gold? Not sure about that but it is certainly drinkable.

Appearance: Beer pours dark black with a slight tan head. Carbonation is evident but not significant. Mostly adding to the body of the beer
Aroma: Coffee is the most prominent with slight raisin, chocolate, and caramel. Zero hop aroma is perceived.
Taste: Taste is light with dark bitter coffee notes. Finish is creamy with a little residual sweetness. Overall very balanced.
Mouthfeel: Found it to be slightly drying and lingering. The creaminess is short lived on the tongue as the roasted malt and bitter coffee flavors come back.

Overall, one of the better beers that I had here. I can see why it was a medal winner.

A: dark brown stout with small amount of creamy head
S: absolutely the best smelling beer I've ever had. Has an oak-like aroma, very powerful, in a good way. It reminded me of a good Cabernet Sauvignon, but better.
T: has coffee and chocolate hints, wonderful flavor.
M: smooth, lightly carbonated
D: probably not a beer you would chug

Really good stout beer. Might be my favorite ever. I had this at a local "real ale" beer tasting (gravity fed firkin).

Served in a pint glass, this stout arrived dark black with a very slight tan head. Roasty aroma, full of coffee and chocolate, with a definite cream character. Very smooth flavor. Lots of bittersweet chocolate and mocha flavors, and roasted grain. Sweet cream smoothed the roasted flavos. Finish was somewhat dry with a lingering diminished roasted flavor. Slight hop spiciness in the finish. Mouthfeel was full and pleasing, carbonation light, and the beer very smooth. Very enjoyable and highly drinkable.

Sample at the brewpub: This brew is a flat black color with a medium creamy beige head that is gone pretty fast. Small blobs of lacing race down the sides of the glass. Roasted coffee and malt aroma. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture. Malt and coffee flavors dominate, and there is some dark chocolate behind it all. The finish is soft and sweet, with just a bit of coffee on the back end. Not a medal-winner in my book but pretty good.
