The chill hazed clear golden yellow beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” white head that soon disappears leaving no foam in the liquid or on the sides of the glass.

The aromas of the beer include wheat, some pale malt and coriander, accented with some light lemon.

The flavors are dominated by the coriander and there’s some wheat, some pale malt, a bit of lemon and just a hint of white pepper spiciness.

The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied and a bit watery since the light carbonation pretty much disappears fairly soon. The medium length finish ends dry and coriander spicy.

On the whole I thought this was an OK beer but not one to get excited about or that competes in the same class as the Allagash white. With this one being local to the Philly area I’ll probably give it another try just in case.

I did not visit the brewery or pub but purchased a six pack of "Wit or Wit Out" at a local liquor store, The Spirit Shoppe in Cherry Hill,NJ. I found this Belgian white ale (a/k/a "wit") to be excellent, just the right admixture of pilsner malt, raw American wheat -- to give a natural unfiltered flavor -- and oats, to create a smooth but earthy brew. I am not a beer savant but occasionally try some of these new/old-fangled craft brews. This is, by far, the best I've sampled containing a noticeable but not too overbearing "raw wheat " essence. I commend it highly! (Even the can's depiction of our local hero Ben Franklin is in good taste and the humorous name "Wit or Wit Out" aptly chosen.)

It pours clear (kind of weird for a witbier) yellow and with hardly any head. The taste is very stereotypical of the style but the appearance was not. Light body and mild carbonation.

Thanks jhartley for this beer.

A - Pale gold colored pour with very little head, no head retention, and small amounts of carbonation. Color is quite clear.

S - Yeast, light citrus tartness, some mild funk, and delicate traces of spice.

T - Yeast/bready, some lemon, funk, mild pepper spice, some lingering lemon peel, seeds of paradise (pepper).

M - Thin body with some light puckering, sides of the tongue water while the tip of the tongue is dry.

O - This was canned on 3/1/17, my fault for letting it sit too long in the fridge but expected more out of this one. Will be happy to re-visit with a fresher can.

Welcome back to Wit Wednesday, Wit or Wit Out Watermelon, but definitely from a CAN! I am CANcredulous at the legs on this this one, since I figured to exhaust Watermelon Wit beers pretty quickly, but I keep finding new ones to review, One week, it may be a Watermelon beer, the next a Wit, but there are Watermelon Wits out there also.

From the CAN: "A slightly tart, smooth sipping Belgian wit. This wheat beer is lightly hopped and brewed with the finest pilsner malt, zesty wheat and high quality oats."

I see that my local, in-person trader, tone77, has beaten me to the punch, but I get the approved picture credit, plus this becomes a part of The CANQuest (tm), following the Crack! I CANducted an inverted Glug, hoping to rouse any lees that may have flocculated onto the punt of the CAN. I got some modest foaming, peaking at just over a finger of fizzy, foamy, bone-white head that quickly fell away to wisps. Color was a hazy (not cloudy) Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4), which was disappointing to me since Wits should be cloudy & I went to all of that effort. Yeah, right. Pity the poor little rich boy. At any rate, the nose had a tang of lemongrass, wheat, black pepper & a light yeasty mustiness, all of which I both expect & want in the style. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was tangy, but lightly defined. It had a zestiness, but it seemed muted, especially given the nose. It was closer to a simple Wheat Ale than a Belgian-style Wit. It needed a better spicy presence to give it the Ooomph! that I was expecting it to have. Finish was more of the same - slightly dry, very refreshing, but not really distinguishable from a Wheat Ale.

A big thanks to the founding father of the canquest, woodychandler for this beer. Looks like I am the first reviewer. Hell yeah. Has a yellow/whitish color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of spices, wheat. Taste starts with a tart wheat zing, some spices, touch of lemon. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking and solid beer.
