Look. There will be ramen. I’m just not in that place yet. It’s been a long day and I need a few (beers, minutes, whatever) to decompress. Last night was, well, I was told I had fun, and today, the sun, the pain, the ride up north some, ugh. I’m figgin’ we can put up all the way next door at that bar on the corner of State and something not something for a bit...
Semi-circular shiny liquid laminate topped bar over something that may or may not be concrete, with a wood lip, panel base, & foot bar, seating a baker’s dozen on difficult to procure swivel chairs. The bar rail has typewriter-like keys imbedded below the trim and detached rail, each key a typewriter letter, the length of them spelling out a verse of Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘After great pain, a formal feeling comes’ on the keys. Pretty cool.
10 taps on a box on the barback center with booze atop and tiered to both sides. Glassware stacked on the corners, and wines shelved to the left with more glassware (tulips) shelved below. Horizontal mirrors on the ends of the bar listing specials and the like. Another one sits over the tap box, and sure, yeah, there are antlers mounted there along with a toy truck. Interesting décor, otherwise. A large Longfellow painting to the right (there are claims of the place having been named for him but then I’ve also heard ‘Lawrence Fucking Kansas’, as in, ‘We should pack it in and move to”), a framed rubbing of F. Scot Fitzgerald’s Tombstone and the Tammy Wynette ‘Divorce’ album (Are you trying to tell me something?) to the left. There are also a few paintings of, I don’t know what or why they are, riddled about.
Walls in deep blue, dark wood plywood-like floors, high ceilings painted white with spinny fans and drop hexi-cylinder lamps over the bar. Large windows over both streets off the corner, a trio of tall vertical windows running the side wall.
There are 7 tables for the sitting at, half of them are long, narrow on the ends and widening across the middles, and then a few are tiny box tables for 2. Back corner holds a couch and a few cushy chairs around a table in a nook. Typewriters for the have at it; type up some shit. The guy we’re sharing a table with is reading the ramblings that people type and leave behind. The great hutch crayon drawing, bookshelves, & board games. Hey, cool old school PBR blue ball lamp.
10 taps, ½ of them Maine offerings (Oxbow Saison Noel & FPA, Bunker Machine Czech Pils, Maine Mean Old Tom, Banded Horn Veridian IPA), the remainder a mix of craft (Jolly Pumpkin Oro De Calabaza, Uinta Hop Notch IPA, Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest Wet Hop Ale), an import (Petrus Winter), and a cider (Original Sin). I drank the Bunker Machine Czech Pils & Oxbow FPA. They’ve also got a half dozen + bottles & cans of nothing too exciting should you need that in your life.
On the revisit 4 months later, the Maine offerings (Bunker Brown, Bissell Brothers The Substance, Oxbow Bandolier, Allagash Ginger Wit), the craft from afar (Otter Creek Fresh Slice, Stone IPA, Founders All Day IPA & Breakfast Stout), the import (Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock), and the cider (Original Sin). I drank the Bunker Brown & Oxbow Bandolier.
And a light bite tonight, we split the roasted Korean BBQ wings. There were three whole wings, prompting a steel cage grudge match for the 3rd one, but I will not provide the entertainment you seek. They had some good heat, yes, theys was good. Mind you, I only had 1 wing but I hit the mixed greens accompaniment in as big a way as saladings can provide.
Packed this Thursday, wait, no, Friday night, okay, I get it, but I wish the Miller & Narragansett kids weren’t taking up all this space. They are playing a significant amount of Radiohead. I am very okay with this, but the ‘Treasure Chest’ neon across the street is causing seizures; we watch their clientele come & go. I fucking like this place. Just wanted to put that into print should I have another night like last night and not ma’member so good tomorrow. Good bar; solid tap list and the beers are in much better shape than seen elsewhere. Excellent tunes & a handsome food menu. Good fun staff. This could easily be in ‘burg.
