Served in a Devil's Backbone weizen glass.

I've been ragged-on recently, but I will continue to force-pronounce the "h" in "wheat". Think Stewie Griffin and Cool Whip... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear straw topped by a finger of solid white foam. The nose tries to hint at a bit of dry wheat, but things are thoroughly dominated by a half-medicinal, half-artificial cherry smell. Not exactly my bowl o' fruit, so to speak. The taste intimates toward a wheat-y revolution, but the malevolent iron fist of the cherry junta maintains a constant vigil, keeping any subversive characters under an ever-present threat of violent reprisal. Worse, a mineral-y, tinny flavor caps things off at the finish. The body is a hefty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a wet feel. Overall, a decided miss. the cherry character just doesn't work at all. 'Nuff said.

A: Pours a lightly hazy dark golden yellow to orange in color. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that quickly reduces to a patch of thin film and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal lacing is observed.

S: The aroma of this beer is intensely artificial cherry with some light underlying hints of wheat.

T: Like the smell, the taste of this beer is quite one dimensional with the artificial cherry flavor dominating. There is a very light hint of wheat in the beer but it is almost cough syrup like.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery.

O: This beer is refreshing and easy to drink but not a beer that I want to have more than one in a session - it is a little too artificial cherry for me.

Excellent lumpy, all white head. Slightly cloudy with an orange, light amber color.

Cherry sweetness in the aroma that reminds me of Kool-Aid, albeit a little more sour. No perceptible hop. No perceptible wheat (which is okay with me).

Like a sweettart, strong fruity sweetness that gives way to a lip puckering sourness that lasts through the aftertaste. There's a thin film left on the palate after the swallow.

Not as sour as a lambic, not as refreshing as a pilsner, this beer has a niche in between. A pleasant change of pace.

From 12/26/10 notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

a - Pours a murky golden brown color with one finger of fluffy white head with no retention and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of very sweet cherries, wheat, bready malts, and fruity malts. Way too sweet smelling for me.

t - Tastes of sweet cherries, wheat, grain, bready malts, fruity malts, and some metallic notes. Something off here with the metallic taste.

m - Light body and high carbonation that stings the tongue.

d - Ok but too sweet in the smell and don't like the metal in the taste. Also way too carbonated. Not Sam Adams best work, wouldn't look to have this one again.

Appears an amber orange filtered hue with a thin cream head topping it off. Aroma is full of artificial marciano cherry esque sweetness almost overbearingly cherry no balance from anyother aromas in there, just potent cherries. Taste well, in the background some malt sweetness along with the same bready Sam Adams characteristic flavor that exists in all of BBC's beers. What makes this beer near untolerable is the rush of cherry extract that becomes cloying and not drinkable or enjoyable like candy. Mouthfeel fizzy carbonation lighter bodied with slight syrupy mouthfeel to it. Drinkability pass on this gimmick cherry wheat and go find a good beer, pass on this grotesque cloying answer to wheat beer fads.

Poured amber with a thin white head.
It smelled of sweet cherry with a background that was somewhat "off".
You can taste the cherry - not so much the wheat.
It had a stickiness to it.
I drank it - but I would rather have the Lindeman's Kriek Lambic if I wanted this style. This tasted like a cherry soda. Not bad, but nothing special. Not the best from Boston Brewery.

Pours a pale amber with a thin lacing of head. The nose has notes of cherries and very faint malt. The taste is faint malt, faint cherries, and slight yeast. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

This isn't a bad beer, but it's syrupy and medicinal at times. The cherry flavor is faint, and overall, this is a one dimensional, easy drinker.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Deep brown gold, a bit muddy, but with a distinct reddish purplish middle hue in the middle of the glass, making faint lemon yellow to the fine edges. Solid and fairly opaque, but there is some transparent carbonation. Head is about two fingers with a nice creamy white appearance. Slowly settles down.

Aroma is straight up cheap neon red cocktail cherries. Real sweet smelling and dominant. Not much wheat or malt sensing character since this is so large and dominating everything on the nose. There are no off flavors at least so it still manages an average score on the aroma.

Palate is not what I remember. This has a real wet seltzery quality to it, and a real flattened malt character. There's an off putting bitterness on the finish and some metallic notes as well, which are really evident on the aftertaste. Repeated sips are not helping me enjoy this more, even much of the sweetness and cherry flavor which hits your nose like a fist to the face, doesn't seem to even come up on the palate very much. Weird body to this as well.

Surprisingly, had this on tap and preferred it more years ago, not by much, but I just can't get into this at all. So much for the re-run.

Old review Feb 2nd 2011

Poured on tap into a pint glass.

Since I didn't pour it myself, head is barely a finger of white but manages to leave a simple collar throughout while drinking. Body is fairly clear and clean of a simple light gold with some visible carbonation. No lacing to speak of.

Bouquet is an overly dominant smell of supermarket from the jar artificial neon red maraschino cherries. The fake stuff, not real cherries. No biscuit aroma, no hops no nothing. It's an overwhelming artificial smell as if you just cracked open the lid. Since it's named Cherry wheat I give it props, but since I hate fake cherries with a passion, I am also not pleased therefore it gets middle of the road for smell.

Taste. Overall not too bad, the biscuit and bread isn't really in the taste until you swallow then there's a bit of bread chew on the swallow. Body is very solid and not too wet either. It is once again overwhelmingly a fake cherry fruit and very sugar sweet.

If that cherry "type" of smell and taste is your thing you'll love this beer. For me though it isn't that great cause I prefer real fruit taste and this isn't it. But it does have characteristics of a solid wheat ale almost and that makes it at least drinkable.

Local Meijer Grocery Store carrying a six of Cherry Wheat....WHAT!!! Gots to try that. The appearance is a clear light amber with reddish hues. There is a thin white head with little foam remains, with active bubbles. The smell is a robust cherry smell that is fantastic. There is a distinct Sammy A taste to every beer...this one has a cherry, wheaty malt twang. The mouthefeel is ok...I think more than one is tough due to the sweet Cherryiness to it. Overall good beer, especially for the summer.

12 ounce bottle, freshness date of Aug 04. Pours golden bronze, with a respectable off white head. Obvious nose of cherry and some yeast in the background. As advertised, cherry flavor carries the freight here. Typical american wheat beer mouth feel and body. Sweet Cherry flavor just about right strenghwise, present but not overpowering. I was pleasantly suprised by this one. Nice summer quaffer or desert beer.

It's not good or bad, it just is. Basically tastes like cherry on a triscuit. There's a strong sweet cherry flavor on top of white american wheat. Smells of mostly cherries with a little wheat. Not really my taste, but if you're a beer noob or into fruit beer its worth a shot. Some of my friends that enjoy craft beer also love this stuff so it can't be too bad.

A big white, foaming head sits atop a light orange laced, golden body. Head dies down to a film.
smell of cherry syrup, toasted malt and a bit of lemongrass.
Tastes like a cherry wheat. Cherry and wheat grains, slightly toasted and sweet. Cherry flavor is a bit deceiving as it seems slight, but wears on you.
Feels a bit thick, not as crisp as I would have liked. Probably will not intentionally have again, but will drink it.

The beer pours a pretty clear golden color with virtually no head . This style calls for both hazy color and good head retention. The aroma is out of this world. The sweet smell of cherries overpowers you at first smell. A great aroma! The taste however is pretty weak. There is still that taste of cherries, but it's not as strong as the odor. There is also a very clean beer taste here. Look, wheat beers are supposed to be hazy. They are supposed to taste like wheat malt; not pale ale. The mouthfeel is good. The body is very light and it drinks easy. Again, wheat beers are best when they are left alone. These big breweries think they need to clean them up to sell more, but in the process they lose the drinkers that got them going.

Pours a clear, pale yellow. One inch head with good retention and lacing. Smells strongly of cherry flavoring (reminiscent of cough syrup). Fits the style unfortunately. There is a smooth and crisp mouth feel (unlike a thick syrup). Average carbonation levels. There is a cherry syrup flavoring that is very strong. Designated as a desert beer and that is the only way I could drink another one of these. There is an associated tartness that makes is hard to drink. Overall, not that great of a combination (cherry + beer).

Appearance: pours a pale golden yellow color with 2” head. Slow rising carbonation bubbles are clearly visible. No lacing develops.

Smell: artificial cherry aroma is not very pleasant.

Taste: artificial cherry flavor is thankfully mild as some pear and grape sweetness, dry wheat tones, and a soft bitterness make up an uneventful fruit beer.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp and dry at the start, smooth and dry at the finish. Brief cherry filled aftertaste. Light-medium in body.

Drinkability: this beer grew very tiring on the tastebuds as the glass emptied. Select any other SA beer for a more satisfying session.

The beer pours a hazy golden orange color with a white head. The aroma has a bit of wheat, but what really comes through strongly is a ton of syrupy cherry notes. The flavor is more of the same, with the sweet, syrupy cherry notes coming through up front. I also get some wheat in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Enjoyed at my friend's house last night and poured into a glass, on to the beer:

The beer is orange as peach in color with a well-retaining head. White rings of foam cling to the glass as the beer is consumed. Soft cherries dominante the aroma. The taste is also cherry dominated and very one-sided. There are faint notes of assorted nuts and hops. Good smooth mouthfeel, a little on the heavy side. Because of the latter, it is actually more of a beer to take in small doses.

My friend's mother also tried this out to, whom doesn't really drink beer outside of Bud. She said it tasted like Cherry Pepsi. I would say this could appeal to casual beer drinkers, but is a "meh" pick for veteran beer drinkers.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a hazy light golden amber with a fine, thin white head and light lacing. Aroma dominated by cherry juice, wheat and a hint of biscuit malt. Flavor is light wheat, bready malt and cherry juice. Cherry is not as dominating as in the aroma. Finishes dry with light hops and sour cherry, slightly astringent. Nice medium body; surprising light creaminess for a low ABV wheat beer. I liked this better than I thought I would, the initial flavor is well balanced and different. Finish is a bit unbalanced and sharp. Interesting.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a small head which does not last long, but lots of carbonation. A nice lacing after pour though. Scent is very sweet with a cherry aroma. Light body with a very nice cherry after taste, not really much bite, but what do you expect from a 5.2% brew. As with most if not all SAs brews very drinkable. This brew really surprised me since I've never had any kind of beer with a fruit in it. A very nice session beer.

12oz single bottle poured into a regular kitchen glass. Thanks for the bottle Ryan.

A- Sammy's cherry wheat is a pale orange color that does not resemble cherries or redness in any way. Not a fault, I just thought it would be darker, but it is a wheat beer so there is that. The slightest bit of sediment. A very hard pour yielded a quarter inch of off white head, no lacing.

S- Somewhere between a wheat and fruit beer with the former winning the race. A nice wheat scent with some cherry influence. Kinda smells like the base beer was a wheat and some cherry was infused. Very minimally, this comes off as cough elixir. Some underlining sweet malt, no hops come up.

T- Kinda mirrors the smell with the wheat taste beating the fruit just by a nose. I remember this being more fruity in the past, perhaps SA re-tooled the recipe? A wheat base with some cherry syrup put in, I don't know. Some soothing caramel malts for the finish. Children's cough suppressant, not as much in the past, which works better IMO.

M&D- A bit of crispness initially from the carb, but that dies as this warms. Cherry wheat is a step below medium bodied with a O.K. feel. For a fruit beer I expect the cherry flavor to stay with me for a bit, but this just kind of vanishes away. A low ABV and a decent taste make this good for two bottles, I would not go farther than that though.

Final 12oz from the summer mix pack.. poured into my shaped Sam Adams glass.

1" head dies leaving no lacing atop a hazy lite golden brew.

Aroma is cherry sucrets.. nothing else... smells artificial.

Flavor is the same.. cherry cough syrup.. just doesn't taste "real". Some wheat and pale malts... and some sweetness to make sure that you taste cherry and little else. Body is lite with quite a bit of carbonation.

I make no apologies on this one... it may be okay for someone who is trying to break into craft beer.. but there is waay too much cherry (artificial) flavors to be enjoyable to me.

Exhibits a nice pinkish color from the cherries used in brewing. Light and a no head retention to speak of.
Smell is overwhelmingly of cherries. Almost like cherry soda.
The taste is solid. Bitter cherries mingle with bitter hops. I'm actually diggin this ride. Light malt adds a touch. Wine like, specifically sherry.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin.
Drinkiability is moderate to average. Not an everyday beer but when the occassion calls for it, its a dessert beer.

Part of me is relieved Sam Adams Cherry Wheat doesn't have a spot of red - fruit beers that take on too much of the colour of their fruits tend to be contrived and superficial. That said, this dull, semi-clouded, honey golden appearance doesn't exactly excite the senses. And the lack of head is concerning, especially for something with "wheat" in the name.

Fruit can be frustrating to brew with; because it's comprised mainly of water and sugar, it's difficult to preserve those fresh, sweet flavours post-fermentation. It requires huge amounts (which, on a scale like that of Boston Beer Co., means a lot of money). Hence, a lot of producers (this one included) opt to supplement natural fruit with "natural flavors".

It's obvious. The aroma resembles that of a maraschino cherry jar. It's not even fruit juice - it's maraschino cherry juice. It smells preserved, sweetened, syrupy, even a little briny and has a bright, almost grenadine-like red fruit flavour that is more at home in a Shirley Temple than an American Wheat Ale. There's a hint of blanched almonds and powdered sugar too.

The flavour is equally shallow, offering only the most superficial fruit flavour, something resembling a cough lozenge or bar mix. Although tart cherries are cited on the label, the use of honey turns things quite sweet. The other components of the beer (yeast, malt, hops) contribute virtually nothing. After a short burst of carbonation there's little left but a stale, damp grain taste.

I last reviewed Sam Adams Cherry Wheat ten years ago. It is remarkable the similarity in my tasting notes and overall impressions. I'll give the brewery full credit for consistency though, as you can see, I'm not willing to grant points for much else. It may lack the eye-catching appearance but, make no mistake, this one of those purely cosmetic fruit beers.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a light hazy orange, with a thick white head, good retention, no lacing.

S: Smells just like a black cherry soda that you would get out of the cheap 25 cent vending machines.

T: Taste is not good. Cold the black cherry dominates and that is all right, would probably be a 3. As the beer warms up, this awful artificial cherry medicine flavour comes out, not something I want to drink.

M: Mouthfeel is really light and watery, I expected more.

D: Don't want to drink this beer as the bad cherry flavour comes out, didn't like it, avoid, Sam Adams' worst.
