Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. In full disclosure, I will confess that I love cherries in general and cherry beer usuall receives high marks from me.

Appearance: hazy golden-orange color with some small floaties in it. Two-finger ivory head dissipated somewhat quickly but left an attractive lace.

Smell: mostly cherries but a hint of citrusy wheat aroma comes through. The cherries are nice and present but not overdone; I like it.

Taste: nice cherry flavor; there's also a nice rather dry bite toward the end as the fruit yields to the wheat. Delicious.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a nice, well-integrated carbonation which yields a nice creamy texture. Great!

Drinkability: I enjoy this beer a great deal and could drink sixer after sixer of it.

The beer pours a pretty clear golden color with virtually no head . This style calls for both hazy color and good head retention. The aroma is out of this world. The sweet smell of cherries overpowers you at first smell. A great aroma! The taste however is pretty weak. There is still that taste of cherries, but it's not as strong as the odor. There is also a very clean beer taste here. Look, wheat beers are supposed to be hazy. They are supposed to taste like wheat malt; not pale ale. The mouthfeel is good. The body is very light and it drinks easy. Again, wheat beers are best when they are left alone. These big breweries think they need to clean them up to sell more, but in the process they lose the drinkers that got them going.

Enjoyed at my friend's house last night and poured into a glass, on to the beer:

The beer is orange as peach in color with a well-retaining head. White rings of foam cling to the glass as the beer is consumed. Soft cherries dominante the aroma. The taste is also cherry dominated and very one-sided. There are faint notes of assorted nuts and hops. Good smooth mouthfeel, a little on the heavy side. Because of the latter, it is actually more of a beer to take in small doses.

My friend's mother also tried this out to, whom doesn't really drink beer outside of Bud. She said it tasted like Cherry Pepsi. I would say this could appeal to casual beer drinkers, but is a "meh" pick for veteran beer drinkers.

Pours an orange/amber with a thin, wispy, white head. Smells of almond paste and sweet cherries with a bit of crisp, lemony wheat in the background. Tastes sweet and quite almondy with sweet cherries following and the same lemony wheat. A hot of sweet cherry liqueur on the finish. There is a bit of tartness to check the sweetness, but no denying that this is a sweet beer. I like this a bit more than most, but I can have a sweet tooth at times.

The beer pours a hazy golden orange color with a white head. The aroma has a bit of wheat, but what really comes through strongly is a ton of syrupy cherry notes. The flavor is more of the same, with the sweet, syrupy cherry notes coming through up front. I also get some wheat in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Sampled on Feb. 16, 2009 on tap at a Ruby Tuesday restaurant. It pours a bubbly pale-yellow with a small amount of off-white head. The carbonation is constant. Any evidence of malts or hops are immediately drowned out by the ovepowering cherry and fruity scents. It's just way too much for me. The mouthfeel is of medium texture. The flavor is like cherry Kool-Aid but more sour or tart. I think I caught a tiny bit of hops but it is really indistinguishable from that cherry taste. Subtlety would have been the better route for this brew. Not all that great.

Exhibits a nice pinkish color from the cherries used in brewing. Light and a no head retention to speak of.
Smell is overwhelmingly of cherries. Almost like cherry soda.
The taste is solid. Bitter cherries mingle with bitter hops. I'm actually diggin this ride. Light malt adds a touch. Wine like, specifically sherry.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin.
Drinkiability is moderate to average. Not an everyday beer but when the occassion calls for it, its a dessert beer.

Pours a reddish light brown body with a thick, frothy head that takes awhile to go down. Some sweetness in the smell and minor hops, but the cherry is predominant. A smooth, somewhat hoppy beer but the cherry overrides everything. Not only is this medium-bodied beer out of balance but the cherry taste is sharp and cutting; reminded me of cherry 7Up. It isn't a bad beer and it tickled my sweet tooth, but I really couldn't stand it that much and one was enough for me.

12oz single bottle poured into a regular kitchen glass. Thanks for the bottle Ryan.

A- Sammy's cherry wheat is a pale orange color that does not resemble cherries or redness in any way. Not a fault, I just thought it would be darker, but it is a wheat beer so there is that. The slightest bit of sediment. A very hard pour yielded a quarter inch of off white head, no lacing.

S- Somewhere between a wheat and fruit beer with the former winning the race. A nice wheat scent with some cherry influence. Kinda smells like the base beer was a wheat and some cherry was infused. Very minimally, this comes off as cough elixir. Some underlining sweet malt, no hops come up.

T- Kinda mirrors the smell with the wheat taste beating the fruit just by a nose. I remember this being more fruity in the past, perhaps SA re-tooled the recipe? A wheat base with some cherry syrup put in, I don't know. Some soothing caramel malts for the finish. Children's cough suppressant, not as much in the past, which works better IMO.

M&D- A bit of crispness initially from the carb, but that dies as this warms. Cherry wheat is a step below medium bodied with a O.K. feel. For a fruit beer I expect the cherry flavor to stay with me for a bit, but this just kind of vanishes away. A low ABV and a decent taste make this good for two bottles, I would not go farther than that though.

Part of me is relieved Sam Adams Cherry Wheat doesn't have a spot of red - fruit beers that take on too much of the colour of their fruits tend to be contrived and superficial. That said, this dull, semi-clouded, honey golden appearance doesn't exactly excite the senses. And the lack of head is concerning, especially for something with "wheat" in the name.

Fruit can be frustrating to brew with; because it's comprised mainly of water and sugar, it's difficult to preserve those fresh, sweet flavours post-fermentation. It requires huge amounts (which, on a scale like that of Boston Beer Co., means a lot of money). Hence, a lot of producers (this one included) opt to supplement natural fruit with "natural flavors".

It's obvious. The aroma resembles that of a maraschino cherry jar. It's not even fruit juice - it's maraschino cherry juice. It smells preserved, sweetened, syrupy, even a little briny and has a bright, almost grenadine-like red fruit flavour that is more at home in a Shirley Temple than an American Wheat Ale. There's a hint of blanched almonds and powdered sugar too.

The flavour is equally shallow, offering only the most superficial fruit flavour, something resembling a cough lozenge or bar mix. Although tart cherries are cited on the label, the use of honey turns things quite sweet. The other components of the beer (yeast, malt, hops) contribute virtually nothing. After a short burst of carbonation there's little left but a stale, damp grain taste.

I last reviewed Sam Adams Cherry Wheat ten years ago. It is remarkable the similarity in my tasting notes and overall impressions. I'll give the brewery full credit for consistency though, as you can see, I'm not willing to grant points for much else. It may lack the eye-catching appearance but, make no mistake, this one of those purely cosmetic fruit beers.

A beer I have enjoyed from time to time for at least 10 years I have some how just never reviewed.

Pours a mildly hazy amber colored beer with a very healthy off white colored head.

Smell is strong maraschino candied cherry and wheat malt. And that is it in a nutshell maraschino cherry.

Taste is slightly sweet with a wheat malt flavor accented by the maraschino cherry flavor just like it smells. Not a terribly complex flavor, just wheat malt and cherry, no hops tasted. After a while this starts to taste a bit like a cherry Pop tart.

Mouthfeel is good and bready.

A tasty beer that is perfect for dessert. Certainly not a beer for everyone but if you love the taste of maraschino cherry then this beer is for you.

Final 12oz from the summer mix pack.. poured into my shaped Sam Adams glass.

1" head dies leaving no lacing atop a hazy lite golden brew.

Aroma is cherry sucrets.. nothing else... smells artificial.

Flavor is the same.. cherry cough syrup.. just doesn't taste "real". Some wheat and pale malts... and some sweetness to make sure that you taste cherry and little else. Body is lite with quite a bit of carbonation.

I make no apologies on this one... it may be okay for someone who is trying to break into craft beer.. but there is waay too much cherry (artificial) flavors to be enjoyable to me.

12oz Bottle

Appearance – Hazy amber colour with a large size fizzy off-white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is a good amount of lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it disappeared.

Smell - Cherries, floral notes, wheat, malts

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation. I can taste wheat mixed with a very sweet cherry flavour. There are also some floral notes mixed with some light malts. It finishes with a tart and sweet cherry aftertaste.

Overall – I actually kind of enjoyed my first few sips, but the taste started to become too sweet and artificial after a while. It's not undrinkable, it's just not something that I would go out of my way to have again.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a light hazy orange, with a thick white head, good retention, no lacing.

S: Smells just like a black cherry soda that you would get out of the cheap 25 cent vending machines.

T: Taste is not good. Cold the black cherry dominates and that is all right, would probably be a 3. As the beer warms up, this awful artificial cherry medicine flavour comes out, not something I want to drink.

M: Mouthfeel is really light and watery, I expected more.

D: Don't want to drink this beer as the bad cherry flavour comes out, didn't like it, avoid, Sam Adams' worst.

12oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint. Best by Feb. 2010. Thanks to BeerFMAndy for the trade.

(A)- Pours a cloudy goldenrod color that produced a rather admirable bubbly white head that is leaving behind some bits of lacing as it slowly dissipated.

(S)- Tons of tart cherries that paired with the wheat reminds me of cherry pie.

(T)- The smell dictated something totally different than how it tastes. The cherries are there, but very artificial-like and more subdued than I would have thought. All the wheat takes center stage; plenty of cloying biscuity hay.

(M)- Very crisp carbonation level. A good decent balance, but the smell deceives you into thinking this will taste good. Very thick feeling and artificially tasting.

(D)- A beer for those seeking something different. Its alright, but I would much rather grab a better tasting fruit beer than this when the mood hits me for this style. Someone who isnt a beer drinker might like this though. . .
