The depths of the Chez Woody Bottle Backlog continue to yield unexpected results. If nothing else, I am able to conduct one heck of a Samuel Adams horizontal.

From the bottle: "Starting with the great punch of grapefruit hop character of a classic IPA, this brew's sharp citrus is pleasantly mellowed and complimented by the tropical fruit notes of pineapple."; "Created by Samuel Adams employee: Teresa Bury".

I had to laugh at previous reviewer, distant-lover's impetus for buying a bottle of this beer. It seems that Ms. Bury has a distant admirer! I needed to Pop! the cap before I could even begin to admire her handiwork, so that is where I began. I followed that up with a very gentle pour since I would not want to ruin her smile. Once I had sufficiently decanted the beer from the bottle into the glass, I gave Terr (we're good friends at this point) a solid swirl, raising just over a finger of dense, foamy, tawny head with decent retention. The room suddenly smelled heavily of pineapple! Terr, baby, what did you do, buy up Dole's inventory & dump it in?!? She simply smiled in response. I get that a lot, actually. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Mouthfeel was medium. The grapefruit flavors may have faded in the interim, but the caramel and bready malt flavors had come forward in their place. Liquid pineapple upside-down cake! Oh, my! When I was a young man, I took a bunch of HomeEc cooking classes in high school & baked desserts were my forte. I wanted to be a cook in the Navy, but my recruiter steered me in another direction. But, I digress. I have always thought that pineapple is a bit too sweet on its own, but when baked to the point of caramelization, it becomes wonderful. I always bake hams encrusted with pineapples held in place by cloves. The interaction between the malt and the pineapple juice may not have been what Terr intended, but this was just fantastic! The finish was quite sweet, not really what you generally expect and/or get in an AIPA, but more modern Southern Hemisphere hops are imparting those kinds of flavors, so fair dinkum. Man, this afternoon of drinking has made me extremely hungry!

Chose this one 1st out of the sampler pack (Aug2014) because I found the blonde brewer on the bottle a bit cute... Not bad at the end of the bottle. Citrus was light and not over powering. I would share with my neighbor....

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 8/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus hops, pineapple, and moderate pale malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of citrus hops, pineapple, and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice fruited IPA. All around good balance and complexity of citrus hop, pineapple, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

poured into a pint glass

A- pours a clear golden color with a small white foamy head that reduces to a small cap, leaving no lace behind

S- subtle citrusy hop aroma with some spicy character, sugary sweet malt & pineapple juice

T- trying to find any hop bitterness up front is a chore, it's more sweet and malty than anything. As is nears the finish it tastes like a mixture of grapefruit juice and pineapple juice, with a slight citrusy hop bitterness on a sweet and sugary finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy and crisp mouthfeel with a sweet and bubbly finish

O- It's hard to call this an IPA because the hops just simply aren't there. It is however very drinkable and is a decent option for a summer day
