i must have had a few hundred of these at beckett's back in the day, purely on sam adams promotion nights. thanks, laura.

maybe it's nostalgia, but i have a soft spot for this one. been reviewed to death, so i've got nothing new to add, but always a safe bet.

12oz bottle bb October 2017 poured into a perfect pint at fridge temp 5.4% ABV 34 IBU. The beer pours bright honey colored amber with thick, robust off white head. There is significant lacing as the beer is consumed. Aroma is caramel and pale malt. The flavor is fairly sweet caramel or crystal malt that gets evened out by a British hop punch at the end. The finish ends up undry as the malt character ends up slightly overpowering the hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, well carbonated and smooth with a slightly sticky feel. Overall, good. This beer, to me, comes across more balanced than a lot of American pales. It looks beautiful in the glass and has a lot of character for 5.4%.

Poured into a custom shaped grip glass: color is copper, head pours 1/2 inch thick with off white to light tan color and lingers for over 10 minutes, great lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is malty, toast, light caramel hint of toffee.

Taste is similar with solid malt flavors: toast, caramel, toffee, simple earthy hops with crisp bitterness.

Mouthfeel is a little sweet, not cloying, moderate carbonation.

Overall this is a good english style pale ale, solid malt flavor and presence.

A way to describe this is like a Vienna ale as opposed to Vienna lager
Was clear amber with a super persistent head which lasted the entire twenty minutes it was in the glass, this has the classic Vienna lager malt but with a nice little blast of hops
Pretty good

Look: Dark amber with red color coming through in the light. Decent head of off white, didn't last long but did lace the glass pretty well.

Smell: Bread notes that are quickly dominated by hop spices. There is a slight malt sweet smell but it's very much in the background.

Taste: Hops are very noticeable with a crisp taste up front. This is followed by an apple taste that is then replaced by a bitter flavor that lasted to the aftertaste.

Feel: A bit lighter than I expected, slightly reminiscent of the lager, not too carbonated and certainly not prickly. It is refreshing and pleasant.

Overall: Pretty solid choice. At first I was not super impressed but it grows on you. As with most San Adams beers it's a safe bet, not amazing but always very good.

S: aromas not big.Moderate spicy, floral hop aromas and moderately low bread crust and bread crumb aromas. Caramel malt and yeast derived fruit aromas are low.

L: It pours brilliant copper amber with a lacy 1" off-white to cream colored foam cap that takes 4 minutes to reduce to a thick film.

T: starts creamy and malty with caramel, bread crust, and bread crumb flavors. Hop flavors are moderate. British malt flavors are moderately high with an initial malty sweetness with caramel notes drying on the finish. Yeast driven fruit flavors suggest stone fruit and are moderate. The initial balance leans to the malt but as it progresses over the tongue the balance moves more to the middle finishing with lingering bitter hops and malt flavors.

F: Smooth with no astringency and low alcohol warmth. Medium to medium full body and medium carbonation.

O: This very drinkable beer is more British than American with more malt and less hops but it is very drinkable.
