DATE: July 7, 2016... OCCASION: A Game of Thrones Thursday, still catching up on Season Five... GLASSWARE: Sam Adams lager... an oil-black body upholds its namesake, while the brownish head sits as two thick fingers that forms its creaminess and resilience... chocolate, creamy coffee, peat and caramel meld for an alluring invitation, a stoutish one, at that... toasted, warming mouthfeel rich with creaminess and strength... for a beer at 7%, quite agreeable, with its body cloaked in smooth sippability... sweet, lactic milkiness that holds enough malt to maintain its lager status... a fantastic flavor profile, brimming with peat, fire and cereal malts--oats and earth... a surprisingly authentic schwarzbier whose strength is palpable... a winner in this mix of six...

I really like this beer. Sam Adams makes some pretty decent dark beers (compared to many of their other styles).

Poured into Alaskan Smoked Porter snifter glass.

A = dark brown a bit of mahogany at the edges when held to the light. Light tan head, settle quickly to a thin layer.
S = roasty, perhaps a little raison, a little booze, no coffee, little chocolate.
M = smooth, a nice dryish, sparkly finish, overall medium feel, not sugary.
T = smooth, toasty roasty, but subtly so, a little fruit but very mild, all smoothed together, a little booze and chocolate
O = 4.25

I wish they would offer this in the late autumn and winter months, dangerously easy to drink at 7 % or more.

The toasted notes of caramel and chocolate seem more like a stout than a lager. Spiced hops balance an otherwise potent malt bill, and force you to expand your expectations of what lager can taste like.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip
Best by June 2016

A- pours a deep black color with a small foamy off-white head that reduced to a full on top, leaving some lacing behind

S- dark roasted malt, chocolate, Caramel, cereal grains, light char

T- nice mix of chocolate and caramel sweetness up front, followed by cereal grains, a hint of dark fruit, and a toasty finish

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns velvety into a crisp dry finish

O- easy drinking and goes down way too easy, well done

Looks incredible. Big pillowing, foamy tan head that lasts forever on top of a glossy black beer with hints of ruby red.

Has that "stale" smell that I associate with a Schwarz. A little bit of rubber band and very smokey/ashy with some yeast.

Some chocolate, and a crap load of ashy, charred grains. Super, super smokey. A touch of dark fruit like plums or red grapes. Some noticebale hops and bitterness. Fairly heavy body. Definetly an imperial version.

Very good beer, but probably a touch too smokey, even for the style.

Actually, I don't have too much to say! A great schwarzbier, just a little more on the porter side due to lack of thinness expected from a traditional schwarzbier. Cheers!
