Rich & Decadent

This rich, decadent bock has a big, malty character with the added sweetness of chocolate. Extended aging on a bed of cocoa nibs imparts a smooth, complex flavor and velvety finish.

Best by April 2023

With how much the old heads on BA have been talking about this beer on the forums for years, I knew I had to grab a bottle when I saw it. That being said, I don’t have high hopes for this, more of a morbid curiosity. Let’s crack it open and see what I’m in for

Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of creammy tan head that fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing

Surprisingly, the nose is warm and inviting. Not super complex but still rather enjoyable. I’m picking up on aromas of milk chocolate, dark toast, raisin, light roast coffee, herbal hops, and light toffee

It has a bit more of an edge to it in taste, actually improving it surprisingly. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting dark toast, molasses, herbal hops, milk chocolate, raisin, vanilla, and light pear. The swallow brings notes of milk chocolate, raisin, poached pear, floral hops, black tea, dark toast, and light toffee

A medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a smooth beer with some bite to it. Finishes mostly dry with a lingering sweetness

Well, I’ll be damned, this was better than I had anticipated. It’s nothing amazing, but definitely cool to see what was once considered “extreme” in beer

Poured like a weak coffee color and settled into the glass with a light brown head.
The aroma was mild for me but it did give me some chocolate.
The taste followed, all chocolate in the first swallow. It balanced out with a few more sips but chocolate is the show here. That said it isn’t sweet, at least not in the traditional sense.
The feel is soft due to the carbonation, very easy drinking.
Glad I grabbed a 6 pack!

Bottle best by April 2023. Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

A: pours a dark brown, with ruby highlights throughout, clearly translucent when held to the light. Two fingers of thick, light tan, foamy head. Like espresso crema. Head lasted a couple of minutes, but has faded to a ring with some moderate lacing.

S: light chocolate wafts from the nose right away. Smells sweet, candy-like. A little touch of malt, too.

T: arrives drier than the smell would suggest, then turns sweet, with the chocolate filling out the palate. Ends on a slightly sweet, vanilla note, with a crisp, snappy finish with lingering vanilla and chocolate notes.

M: hefty for a lager, but really midweight with a clean, watery texture. Mild carbonation.

O: The chocolate aroma was the best part for me.the taste isn’t really sweet enough to be a dessert beer, and it’s not as roasty as I’d like from a Porter or schwarzbier. Had with some pretzels, the chocolate plays well off the salt. If I had this at a Christmas party or a work event, I’d probably love it. At home under laboratory conditions, it leaves a little wanting. Glad I tried it; liked their Porter better.

This one pours very very dark brown, crystal clear when held to light; very frothy and dense cream brown head, lingers in the form of a ever present thick film; some minor lacing.

Chocolate is front and center, it comes off almost as cocoa powder in dark chocolate form; minor dark toast aroma; rich all around in both chocolate and malt.

The taste is very rich; chocolate, darker toffee, slightly toasted dark bread; just a hint of rye like spice on the finish.

The body is somewhere on the blurred line of light and medium; has a very soft smooth and creamy carbonation, this pairs very nicely with the chocolate; and what makes it even nicer is how clean it finishes...the chocolate comes and goes; one second its there the next its gone; really no bitterness to speak of. For such a rich beer there is very minimal sweetness.

This beer is quite tasty in my opinion; the flavors all meld so well, very balanced and drinkable.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This old brew I never thought I would
see again pours a dark brown with a nice head of off white foam that settles
to a thick ring, thin layer, and sports light lacing. Nose of chocolate, raisin, cherry,
and subtle spice amongst breaded malts. Flavors surpass the nose with dark
brown sugars, coal, cherry, raisin, faint cranberry, dark breaded malts, and faint
spice notes of clove with banana lurking in the background. Mouth feel is
medium, medium light carbonation, and a lightly dry finish.

Overall----very nice and a classic I am glad to see again!

Cheers

RBESG 2006 Grand Tasting. 750 ml bottle. Dark brown colour, low head. Sickening chocolate aroma, like chocolate sauce. Very sweet chocolate flavour, too sweet for me, but probably nice if you "simply LOVE" chocolate.

Looks and smells alright.
Thin chocolate taste. Thin mouthfeel, was expecting more crisp as it's a lager after all.
Definitely not my favorite from Sam.

Pours dark Mahogany with a 1/2 inch tan head, which dissipates. Minimal lacing.

Strong aroma of cocoa, toffee, slight coffee.

Taste is malty, chocolate, caramel, toffee. Sweet.

Full bodied, Light carbonation. Sweet finish.

This is a pretty good chocolate bock. One of the best chocolate beers I've had.

Now here's a rare beauty in my neck of the woods. I was privileged enough to try this one from a cousin out in Boston. This was rare there as well. It had the smoothest after tones and hints of dark chocolate. A subtle after tone of cherry. and a mass influx of aroma and thickness that made you appreciate the beer that much more. When I cracked it I took a huge whiff from the bottle, Hearing only good things about it. I took a quick taste before I let it breathe. Even in this shocking state where it was not allowed to breath it was inspiring and tasteful, chalked full of flavor. and kindness. I grabbed a glass from the freezer and proceeded to do a long and tasteful pour, Hitting the end of the bottle to leave some great head. The head was fantastic, breating beer Chocolate beer. Armoa beer. Felt nice on the upper lip. lasted quite awhile. until I took it down with glee. The only downside was wanting more, and knowing I would not be able to have it. A+ definatly in the top 10 for me.
