Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)
Massachusetts, United States

Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hazy golden and filled with smooth wheat character, our Hefeweizen is our take on the classic German beer. Notes of clove and banana, signatures of this traditional style, accent the aroma and flavor, and are complemented by a subtle bready malt character. Clean and crisp, this beer pairs best with a sunny summer day.

Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Spalt-Spalter Noble hops

Got this beer in the 2017 summer pack. Smells of bananas, clove, and also of wheat. An easy drinking beer and the banana flavor signs though. I could drink this again for sure.

I just don't understand the ratings for this beer. Maybe its different for 2017? This beer is almost on point for the style. The smell and taste blast my mouth with hefe. It's not Live Oak Hefe, but a nice representation of the style. I would drink this daily to be honest. Its a good beer

A: Pours a clear yellow color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a small ring of lace around the glass

S: Banana, clove, and wheat up front with some other light spices in there as well

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the banana and clove and goes into some light spices and wheat. Banana and clove linger. Finishes with lingering yeast undertones

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: The re-emergence of the SA hefe in the newest summer variety pack is actually surprisingly good. The feel could use a little work, but this went into the grave for a reason and came out with a vengeance. Very easy to drink and really utilizes the yeast for the classic nose and flavors. Don't downplay or underestimate this one. It's back for a reason

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of funky yeast, wheat malt, spices and bananas. Body is medium and smooth. Wheat malt, yeast, bananas and spices fill the mouth. Finish is long and spicy. Good Hefe.

Poured into a paneled glass mug. Hazy golden orange color, nice fluffy head that sits nicely over the top of the glass. Relatively minimal lacing, but okay head retention.

Not terribly strong on the nose. Citrusy, wheaty, some clove. Could be better.

Flavor is quite a bit better. The citrusy flavor is a pleasant surprise, I don't know of many (if any) hefeweizens with citrus flavors in them like this, that's usually more of a Witbier kind of thing. Really lets you know that this is a wheat beer; speaking of which, the wheat malt is actually a bit present here too, not too bad really. Standard clove note is also there and nicely prominent. The banana is there too and it takes a bit of a backseat, but certainly helps to round out the flavor. There's also actually a nice little hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Very interesting.

The mouthfeel is also pretty interesting. It's juicy, really quite drinkable, somewhat creamy thanks to the flavor, but it's a bit chalky in the finish. I don't really necessarily mind that, but some might find it off-putting.

Overall, I was honestly pleasantly surprised with this. This is in fact a rather solid hefeweizen. The citrus notes, crusty malt note and little pinch of hop bitterness are a really nice touch that makes this one stand out from many others. Well done Boston Beer Company, well done indeed. You do not disappoint.

A: Hazy golden orange color, 1 inch white head, good lacing

S: Banana, clove, bubble gum

T: Sweet malts, banana, clove, bubble gum, band aid. All of these flavors come in as a mixture of different flavors.

M: Medium to light

O: A pretty good representation of the style. This is one of my favorite styles and this beer hits the nail on the head.

Another Sam Adam's offering, another solid entry in the hefeweizen arena...

An appealing orange-yellow coloration to go along with the hazy look in the glass all of it topped off with a thick, white head. The smell is mostly wheaty but there are some hints of coriander I pulled out. The feel is mostly carbonation, but still very crisp on the tongue. A decent taste of wheat and some lemongrass as a backdrop to the hops. Though not one of the best SAs I have had it is a solid offering and one I'll enjoy again.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Wezen glass. Enjoy by October 2017.

L: Hazy mustard yellow. Two finger fluffy off-white head. Good stick to the glass. Great retention.

S: Faint phenols, bubblegum, leafy hop, wheat, bready and yeasty.

T: Kind of weak flavors, don't get much banana or clove like a typical hefe. Some wheat, some yeast. A poor attempt.

F: Light, crisp, smooth and clean.

O: This is a disappointment.

A - Hazy golden body, short white head, lots of thin lacing.

S - Lots of banana and bubble gum, yeast esters that are quite clearly offering the expected Hefeweizen notes.

T - Flavor is brisk, lots banana and bubble gum, a core of wheat and a bit of sourness in the close.

M - Smart carbonation, a bit spiky, with a lingering feel that rests on the tongue after the close.

O - I'll note that the beer does not reach the heights of German versions of the style, but there is nothing wrong with this version, and it does hit a number of the expected flavor notes.
