Been trying more grapefruit beer and shandies lately, this one is excellent as it is still very much an IPA and not overly sweet like many of the other varieties. You have all the sharp, crisp, tangy flavors of an IPA with the added bonus of a really nice citrus finish.

So this essentially tastes as though Jim Koch himself just took a zoster and some unripe grapefruit while standing over a kettle of Rebel, and said "screw it," while zesting away like a goddamm madman before adding essence of Boston Lager and bottling this mess.

In theory this should be a good beer - some grapefruit that would complement the citrus of the hops in an IPA. In practice, it is a failure. I don't think I've ever had an IPA that I struggled this much to finish12 oz. Look is average, smell is actually decent, and feel is nothing special. Taste is just plain bad. Maybe grapefruit is one of those things that you either genetically love or hate. I am in the hate camp. I would never eat a grapefruit for breakfast, hate grapefruit juice, and this beer is in-your-face grapefruit. I thought the grapefruit would be subtle and maybe amplify the hops. It isn't and it doesn't. No amount of cork sniffing verbiage can salvage this beer. Blech! I actually want my money back and I have never considered doing that with a beer.

From the Sam IPA mix pack. Impressive pour, with very solid head and lace atop a dark golden body. A little too much visible carbonation for my taste. Nose is fruit dominated; sweet grapefruit with mild obstruction from toated malt tones.

Surprisingly complex in the taste; grapefruit hop bitterness was expected, but the taste morphs from first sip to aftertaste. Definitely a little bit oif a pucker up between the hops and the grapefruit. Probably not for the uninitiated as far as IPAs go. Texture is appropriately thick. Bold and assertive. Definitely bucks the SA rep for being corporate and mild. Nice effort, Sam.

Bought this on a whim. Love Sculpin Grapefruit and thought what the heck. Well, it's not as tasty as the Sculpin version, but you know what, it's still pretty good.

Grapefruit fans will certainly enjoy it. A refreshing bitter blast, but not a lot of subtly elsewhere. I happen to love grapefruit, so it's a winner for me. Kind of a one trick pony for those not into grapefruit though.

Watching the debate. Hopefully this beer lifts my spirits.

Look : Hazy lemon gummy bear color, with a 3 finger head, with glorious lace. 90% opaque.

Aroma : Cat piss.

Flavor : Thankfully a little better, but only marginally. Bready grapefruit notes, mostly peels and pith, very little flesh. Orange seeds. Some toffee malts somewhere in there. Ends with some fresh bread, enveloped by honey-pine and ugliness.

Feel : Slightly parchy, not really resiny like it should be. Some aggressive carbonation, semi dry finish.

Overall : I'm gonna dump this one. Worst of the Rebel series by far. Just disgusting, no real essence or redeeming value.

Enjoy before 4/2016.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, grapefruit juice, and grapefruit soda aromas. Taste is much the same with grapefruit soda, grapefruit juice, citrus zest, and earthy hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with grapefruit qualities that come across as fairly soda like to me.

Serving type: bottle.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is golden-tangerine with a small whitish head on top.

S: Odd - husky, grainy malt and just a hint of citrus.

T: First impression: wow, there's more malt here than I was expecting. Modest amount of toffee-like sweetness up front, but then turning into a grapefruit IPA - i.e., red grapefruit and grapefruit peel arrive about mid-sip. Some lemony bitterness joins the citrus show for the finale, with a lingering taste of grapefruit juice.

M: A little flat, carbonation-wise. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium.

O: Decent. Develops better after a few sips.

If you love citrusy, grapefruity IPAs like me, then you will love this beer. The grapefruit taste really comes through big time, but there is still enough balance to it that you don't feel like your drinking grapefruit juice.

This is HORRIBLE! Not a huge fan of Sam Adams considering how mamy beers they make but none of them from what ive tried are very good, thought id give this a try because i like hoppy, citrusy beer and wanted to know if this was comparable to grapefruit sculpin for half the price.

Pours a hazy golden yellow color, looks ok, should be a deep golden or even copper color for an ipa i.m.o.

It doesnt really smell like anything...very lacking in hop aromas, no citrus or pine, no sweet maltyness, its actually reminiscent of a lager to me, hmmm.

Taste absolutely horrible! Was hoping it would grow on me after a few trys, nnnnope! Its intially pretty bitter but not in a balanced good way, all the imperfections in the hops, the undesirable qualities are coming to the for, maybe its the grapefruit additive that doesnt blend well with the hops. The only thing worst than the flavor is the aftertaste. Taste like rotten fruit or bad juice or something.

Mouthfeel is far too over carbonated almost fizzy. Ish.

Overall: drainpour, DO NOT buy this!

A clear gold color with a small white head that faded quickly.
Big grapefruit aroma.
Grapefruit and grapefruit rind taste.
Nicely bitter,
Nice beer, but I wouldn't want to drink a lot of these.

Pours a hazy/cloudy orange with a white head that fades very fast and leaves little lacing.
The aroma is grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruit.
The taste is grapefruit and pith bitterness along with a bit of mango sweetness and some nice juiciness.
Mouthfeel is about medium and well carbonated.
Tasty and refreshing.

12 oz can, with May 2016 on the bottom, came as part of a 12 can sampler box

Pours hazed darker tangerine, with a long lasting cap, leaving larger bubble froth and strands of thicker lace.

Fruity hopped up nose with dull citrus, with grapefruit juice and grapefruit rinds coming to mind.

Nose follows through onto the palate with sweeter grapefruit notes in control.

Medium bodied with carbonation on on the soft and pleasing side

Decent if not amazing, def worth trying
