Creamy, roasty, slightly sweet, bitter. What a surprise this beer turned out to be. Maybe this is the first time I've actually seen it in the store or perhaps it's my craft-beer-tendencies that blind me to Sam Adams. Not sure, but when I saw the price tag ($8.99 for a sixer), ABV and description - it called to me. Pours an inky-black but doesn't look viscous or oily; the brew has a lightness about it that's accentuated by the soft head. Aroma of roasted barley, coffee grounds, charcoal and chocolate. The taste is bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, char, burnt toast and a hint of milk chocolate. Outstanding balance of malt, hops and lactose gives a it a roasty, bitter and slightly sweet profile. 4.9ABV is wonderful; allows me to scratch that dark-beer itch without going overboard. Delicious beer with a lingering bitterness. Awesome example of the style.

A great stout and probably my favorite Samuel Adams beer. Drank this straight out of the bottle. Smelled notes of coffee and chocolate. A smooth taste and a great finish. Enjoy this beer. I know I did.

Appearance: Dark pour/reddish edges.
Aroma: pleasant medium-light coffee/chocolate cream
Taste: sweet up front and mid-palate, perfect carb, ends quickly and gives way to more bitter finish
Finish: bitter light coffee finish with the very end changing to that classic stout-ey medium burnt bite characteristic of most stouts I have tried.
Overall: well balanced and tasty. A really good cream/milk stout

Presentation: 12 oz bottle freshness notched for August 2017 poured into a pint glass.

Look: Dark cola brown almost black with a 3/4 finger tan head. Head collapses quickly but revives somewhat with a swirl.

Smell: Malts, dark chocolate, and coffee.

Taste: Rather sweet start fades into slightly bitter dark chocolate and coffee notes.

Feel: Medium body with moderate carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: A good, flavorful beer and the one that got me into stouts.

Look: Pours like a coke. Bubbles on the side of the glass, head is very carbon-y. More like a soda head than a beer head.

Smell: No distinct smells overpower. Smells like a dark beer, but slightly less appetizing.

Taste: Very accessible coffee-cream tasting stout. Simple, easy to drink.

Feel: Dominates back of throat and top of mouth, taste does not linger more than 3 seconds.

Like most Sam Adams not very good. It's a dark beer trying to taste like coffee with cream but comes up short. Left Hand Milk Stout is a better version of what they're trying to do.

Another SA another good offering this one a solid stout.

Out the glass pours perfectly black liquid. It's got a nice head with some staying power and some lacinging down the glass. Mouthfeel is mostly carbonated but there are hints of the booziness and creaminess that it touts. The scent is a dark rich roasted coffee but this one has a distinct malt attached to it. The taste was a mixture of cream, dark coffee and, yes, hint of booziness as well. Overall a good offering from Sam Adam,s another good stout from their repitior.

I am not only back to eradicating the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but I am laser-focused on beers from the Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams) for the time being.

From the bottle: "Harkening back to the tradition of English sweet stouts, our cream stout has a rich smooth silkiness that differs from its Irish dry stout cousin. Dark roasted malts give this brew its ebony color and deep notes of chocolate, caramel and coffee for a rich roastiness and subtly sweet finish. Cheers! [undersigned] Jim Koch".

A Pop! of the cap, a moderately gentle pour & I was off & running. Not only did the head come up fairly quickly, but I even got a pseudo-cascade to go along with it. Once it finished doing its thing, I was left with a dense, two-finger cap of foamy, rocky, light-tan head with decent retention. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing light only at the edges to reveal mahogany highlights. Nose definitely smelled of chocolate and coffee. I have to at least give them credit for truth in advertising. Mouthfeel was medium to full, not quite creamy, but close. The taste was very sweet and now I got a milk chocolate flavor along with a good bit of caramel, but not much in the way of coffee. It reminded me of Sugar Babies or a Cadbury Chocolate & Caramel bar. Finish was interestingly semi-sweet, not fully sweet. I got a hint of coffee roastiness on the extreme finish and that helped to hold the sweetness in check. Not bad, a good representation of the style, but just not my bag.
