Not a complex beer, very dark in color, roasted taste, with some hints of chocolate. Very decent but not awesome.

L: pours deep chestnut brown under a lacy 1.5" very dense light tan cap with a very fine bead and good retention

S: aromas hint at cocoa, grains, some dried fruit and coffee.

T: flavors start with a mild sweet cocoa with a very light coffee roast backed by dark dried fruit. There are also some grain and nut flavors

F: creamy with medium body and carbonation

O: a flavorful, easy to drink schwartzbier with moderate alcohol

12oz bottle, with updated labeling. Date notched Enjoy Before Feb
Drank from the bottle, but I assume it is black or near black. Chocolatey aroma with dark and roasted grain. Nice blend of flavors and very stout-like with roasted barley, plenty of dark cocoa, a bit of anise and char with some black tea-like earthy hops. Feel is fuller, creamy, and smooth with a fairly clean finish. Overall, a little better than I remember, but it's been a long time since I had this last. Nice to come back to it. It's very approachable with some nice dark cocoa flavors.

I'm putting this in the top 5 of the 25 Boston Beers I've Had. This is a simple, clean, well-made, malty lager. The roasted malt is a nice variation suitable for winter. The roast sits nicely on the tongue. Not trying to do just much... just sort of wanting to be appreciated. The subtlety worked. I will have this Black Lager again.

12oz bottle into PP glass
BB 2/2018
L-pours a dark black w/ tints of brown, with an inch thick cream colored head
S- clean lager yeast, w/ a subtle hint of coffee
T- initial taste is clean and crisp with not much going on, however there is a nice bitter coffee flavor on the finish
F- medium-bodied, slightly creamy, mostly crisp
Overall this is an ok beer, with a nice crispness to it w/o too much going on.....a session dark beer if you will

Black in color with just a pinch of light getting through at the bottom of the glass. There's a quarter inch of brown on top. The aroma is of caramel and bready malt. I'm tasting a light dose of caramel and honey wheat bread. The aroma implies that there should be more flavor. The mouth is light, crisp, and quaffable.
