Picked this up in the brewmasters collection mixed sixer-nice to see a fairly obscure style brewed by Sam Adams.

A: Pours a deep carmel, nearly black, with a huge head that sticks around.

S: Roasted malts with faint hints of chocolate

T: Starts off very sweet and roasty, finishes with a mld hoppiness.

M: Clean and very smooth.

D: A bit sweet without enough bitterness to balance things out, but note a bad beer at all, and a nice change of pace.

I found this beer in the brewmaster's collection at my local Kroger. Poured into a chilled lager mug. The first thing you will notice is how dark it is. When they said "black" lager they mean't it! It has a nice creamy head. It drinks VERY smooth! That should be expected for a lager. Really, this brew reminded me of a dunkel I brewed in my basement. This is certainly worth picking up again. Give it a shot before beers prices go through the roof!

Poured into a pilsner glass.

A- A rich dark black color with chocolate brown hews when held to the light. Creamy tan head with rich lacing.

S- Strong aroma of coffee and hints of dark chocolate.

T- The malts definatly lead the way Creamy and the coffee aromas come through in the flavor adding a pleasent bitterness tying it all togather.

M- Lingering tase is pleasen't but nothing to special

D- I can nurse about four a day no problem. Very good but not something I'd just pound.

look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Flimsy one finger head, kind of thin and off-white.

Smell: Sweet and spicy notes with roasted malts and alcohol. Smells great!

Taste: Strong and full bodied yet surprisingly smooth. Rich taste of roasted malts with some hoppy notes.

Mouth feel: A bit more carbonated than I would have liked but its not enough to ruin the experience.

Drinkability: Though it packs a mean punch, its still pretty drinkable.

Sam Adam's has done it again, making mass-produced brew yet still keeping a close eye on quality.

Cheers!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a BN army pint glass.

A- Deep dark brownish red color. Poured a thick head that reduced but stuck around. Slight lacing up the glass.

S- Hard to detect the roasted malt at first, but becomes present as it warms. Some off putting acidic? aromas.

T- rich roasted malt flavor, hint of chocolate. Finishes dry and a little bitter.

M- medium bodied and smooth much like a boston lager.

D- Nice fall session beer. Goes well with the harvest mix pack it comes it.

Pretty solid black tone, purpleish in light, good beige head, great lacing on the sip. Smell is mostly a burnt malt with a fatty sweetness to it. Faint herbal hop characters but barely. Taste is balanced but a bit plain, just some burnt malt and a bit high on carb. Overall missing something

Bought this one in a winter pack.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. A medium size foamy head that actually hung in there for a little while.

Smells of dark roasted malt and sweet chocolate malts, not much hop presence to the aroma.

Tastes pretty damn good. Tasted the roasted malt flavor and small hop presence, very caramel. I would absolutely drink this more often, if there were more hops in it.

Good beer all in all.

A-Dark Red, with thin off-white head.

S-Smoke and Coffee.

T-Smoke, Coffee and Nut.

M-Kinda heavy and thick. Maybe chewy.

D-Not very drinkable. I don't like heavy, thick beers. I like a lot of flavor (e.g. a Vienna or an IPA), but I don't like a heavy beer that drags you down. To date, Sam BL is my favorite daily drinker, so this one was a let down. Got it in a seasonal sampler.

[Eyes] Caramel-brownie red with a good creamy head, no retention.

[Nouse] Aroma was maltroast... some caramel, chocolate, coffe hints and some sour fruit.

[MOuth] Moderately bitter in flavor with a touch of caramel malt, Mouthfeel was creamy and slick

Good beeer!!!!

A - Nice, mocha-colored head that retains fairly well. Black body; ruby if held to light

S - Chocolate and caramel with faint earthy hops

T - Roasted chocolate malts with a hint of caramel. Slight hoppy flavor in the finish

M - The dark color belies the light body of this beer. Carbonation, and a little watery (flavor is fleeting). Clean finish

D - Only thing that makes this beer less drinkable is the rich flavors of the malts. All in all, a very drinkable beer

A: Aggressive pour resulted in a two-finger white head that disappeared quickly atop of a deep black beer. Minor lacing throughout the beer.

S: Picked up on some roasted coffee with some sweet malts and possibly a bit of dark chocolate.

T: The taste seems to follow the smell. I immediately noticed coffee. A little bit of roasted nuts and dark chocolate. Sweet malts seemed to come out near the end of the beer.

M: Crisp up front. Smooth throughout. Clean finish. Not much aftertaste.

D: An easy beer to drink. I could sit down and have a few at a time.

A: Thick coffee color with foamy tan head.

S: Smell of sweet roasted goodness and some spice.

T: Mostly sweet in flavor. Full of roastiness and chocolate. Some hops do come through providing some balance.. Finish is mild.

M: Fairly creamy, with decent carbonation.

D: Quite drinkable for such a sweet and tasty beer. This might be one of my favorites in the SA lineup.

Appearance - Pours a thick dark color with some mild head. Does look red on the outside somewhat--very uniform throughout.

Smell - Amazingly chocolaty, some sweet notes, hints of malt, coffee.

Taste - Reminds me of the SA cream stout, yet distinct. The thick roasted coffee finish is the best part about this beer (not bitter at all finish). I would also have to agree with a lot of the other readers that there is no distinct taste to it--theres a concoction of many notes, yet none overwhelm you with the exception of the coffee aftertaste.

Drinkability - This is a pretty drinkable brew. Not something you can get drunk of because of the flavors, but this is definetely enjoyable amongst friends.

A - Pours dark with a tan/amber edge. Off-white/tan creamy foam head that remains until last sip. Leaves smear down sides of glass.
S - Chocolate and roasted nut is the majority. Also, earthy-wood aroma.
T - Mellow roasted flavor. Slightly bitter all the way through. Sweet, but not overwhelming.
M- Smooth and lightly carbonated. Medium body.
D - I could drink two or three of these. Easy to drink and a good transition beer. One of my favorite Sam Adams.
