From the 2017 Fall Variety Pack. The side label has a notch over "JAN"

Appearance: The body of the beer is a dark brown color with a deep ruby red color as the light strikes it. Althought the beer is very dark it is still very apparent that the beer has nice clarity. It has a nice fluffy, creamy textured light khaki head that has good retention. It looks great.

Aroma: There is a light aroma of burnt wood, a very light touch of pine, and a burnt caramel aroma.

Taste: Up front there is a sweet caramel flavor with some toasted toffee. This flavor carries all the way to the back of the palate. There is a light bready flavor towards the end. It finishes very light with a bit of caramel at the end.

Mouthfeel: It has a light mouthfeel with just a touch of a bitter carbon character to balance out the malty sweetness. It is a very easy drinking beer.

Overall: This is a very impressive Schwarzbier. It is clean, well balanced, easy to drink, and very well made. It's the kind of beer you could enjoy multiples of. I would highly recommend it and I would buy it again.

Black, with a finger of tan foam, mild lacing left down the glass, very ruby up to the light. The aroma is roasted malts, bread crust, and a mild, but, pleasant cocoa. Same for the flavor, the beer is pretty balanced; I'd say it leans toward the sweeter side, overall. Full carbonation, medium thin body, and dry. Nice pleasant brew, here. The first one I had in the Fall pack tasted very sour/infected. This beer was nothing like that.

12 oz bottle. Pours opaque black, revealing a reddish hue only when held close to a light source. Taste is of sweet (at first) maltiness, leading to a slight bitter aftertaste. Nice and creamy. Delicious.

Dark reddish brown color with tan cap and lacing.

Aroma of dark roasted malt with toffeeish undertones. A dark bread malty richness with just a whif of hop coating.

Taste is rich dark malt with a sense of liquid toffee touched with a hint of licorice. These rich flavors on entry mellow out mid palate while hops play some light notes in the background. I was expecting some sweetness to show up and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't. Flavors fade in the aftertaste ending with a touch of cocoa bitterness.

Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

They managed to make this one rich while keeping it dry. Not a complex brew but well crafted.

Plenty dark pour but lower viscosity, substantially in conformity with the style. Imparted more roast than hops in the aroma. Caramel came too.

Taste was sweeter than expected, the hops came through too. Plenty of toffee. Highly carbonated but par for style. Plenty of dry bitterness. Always happy to see these in a SA variety pack.

Sam Adam's Black Lager, is well, black. The color is self-explanatory, I think. Things get interesting with the aroma, where I get a heavy pepper scent, conjuring images of teriyaki jerky. But on second examination there's an even nicer, subtler and more complex touch of peat, adding a low, deep earthiness, thickening the aroma. The flavor is much maltier and simpler - more like your standard winter warmer. The aroma is where the interesting dimensions are, so linger here with your nose. The flavor, while fine, doesn't live up to the aroma's nuance.
