I enjoyed one tonight. Had the Noble Pils before..very good..thought this would be better. Enjoyed it but was not blown away by double. Still a good beer from SA. Been drinkin SA since the early 90s always enjoyed their beer. Got this beer from mix pack at Costco. Happy so far with mix pack..6 styles..3 beers deep 3 more to try. Over all a very good beer once again from SA. Happy theres 3 more left.

Here's a really good reason, all by itself, to buy the new "Adventures in Lager" pack! Now, I'm pretty sure this beer is at least based on the recipe for their Hallertau Imperial Pilsner from 5-6 years ago. Though I never got to try that beer, it seems like a similar enough idea... a strong pilsner, single hopped with Hallertau mf. The stated ABV on this bottle is a bit higher and the name was changed so I'm guessing it's not technically an exact rebrew.

The bottle pours out a beautiful, mildly-hazy bright copper liquid which holds up several fingers of bone-white head with excellent retention and lace show. The surface of the beer in my glass retains a sheath of foam rife with densely-packed bubbles and the lacing itself is a fantastic lattice of sticky, cobwebbed suds. Gorgeous pour and I like the slightly hazed look.

The nose is fairly laid-back and subtle at first, though it does get a bit more intense if the beer is allowed to warm closer to room temperature... I pick up some floral notes along with wildflower honey, lemon poppy-seed muffins, rosewater, bready maltiness (sometimes with some rye-like qualities) and freshly-cut grass. It's an amazingly distinct combination of smells that is at once very "Hallertau" and yet, at the same time, pretty dissimilar to some smaller beers that utilize the hop heavily. Interestingly enough, however, there isn't even a sniff of misplaced ethanol to be found, despite the beer clocking in at over 8% ABV.

On the tongue, this beer is a harmonious arrangement of bready, caramel-y malt goodness and deft Hallertau hop flavors working in perfect concert. No word of exaggeration when I say that this is easily one of the best Sam Adams beers I've had in a very long time. Each sip delivers a consistent dose of flavors that run the gamut from spicy and white pepper-like to floral and rose-like to syrupy sweet malt, slight pine, lemon/orange marmalade and so on. It's just amazingly complex, deep and enjoyable. Coupled with the intensely smooth feel, low-medium carbonation and the rather thick way the beer sits on the tongue, this is just a perfectly decadent beer that flaunts its intense hoppiness extremely well.

There's a great balance here, though, between hops and malts. Many bigger, hoppy pilsner-sort-of beers these days seem to fail to really deliver on any kind of middle-ground and this is definitely the best compromise on that front that I've experienced yet.

It's kind of funny because, should this indeed be based on the beer I'm thinking it's based on (and I'd be very perplexed if it weren't, mind you), this was probably the "original" "double India pale lager" style beer. Jack's Abby is probably widely-considered to be the brewery to have made them wildly-popular more recently (and I recall Mass/Kiwi Rising blowing quite a few minds several years ago), but their hop utilization is certainly more in line with the new-school American hophead's idea of intense hop flavors (more tropical, more citrus, juicier and arguably more 'raw') than straight-up cramming 12 pounds per barrel of Hallertau mf. hops into a big pilsner base, but the original incarnation of this beer was likely the forerunner of such a bizarre idea. Somewhat amusing how things can change so much in just a few years, eh? Anyway, the bottom line is that this is an excellent drink. Completely drinkable and enjoyable... complex and intense with very nuanced, balanced flavors. A delicious treat that should put most Sam Adams haters to silence upon first sip. Prost!

Yum. Grassy herbal orange aroma and a juicy tangerine pine flavor. Quite drinkable for the strength and not too bitter. This bee could get me in trouble.

DATE: July 1, 2016... OCCASION: Camp Week One, done...and done well... GLASSWARE: 22 oz. pilsner.... pours a staunch two-finger white head that showcases ample spongy froth and proper pock marks... the body is golden orange amber with reasonably sized and paced bubbles... rich Hallertau delivers a punch of flora and equally alluring spruce... lemon, orange peel, and even grapefruit can be detected, making this quite an inviting pilsner... first sip: thick, almost syrupy at the throat, coating the tongue in honeyed sweetness and resin... second sip: a crushing grapefruit and sourdough combination draws contempt from the overworked tastebuds... medium to full-bodied, with the 8.6 % ABV capable of adapting to the flavor profile appropriately... drinks well and swiftly for an Imperial... the hops make for a robust experience, while the bread malts balance the power and ground it at the throat... I like this mix-six, and in particular its bold, alcohol-forward offerings... I applaud Sam Adams for working this into their profile, though I will need to taste the other four before declaring a favorite...

Having had the imperial pils with hallertau, I was very excited about this one. It seems to be a bit more malty and not have the huge earthy hop profile as the original. Still, bright, citrusy, and spicey.

Medium to full bodied. A big Pilsner.

Slightly hazy golden yellow/orange in appearance
Aroma is big lemony grassy noble hops. Subtle hints of orange and grapefruit as well.
Flavor is honey and citrus mingling together in a lovely way.
Medium body with a perfect level of carbonation. Not too bitter, but still retaining a big hop punch. Rather dry
In some respects this reminds me of some of the "triple ipas" that people rave about. It has much of that alcoholic sweetness that gets balanced by the lack of residual sugar and bitterness. I'd prefer this to most of those for my money. A very well crafted beer, with a very traditional in approach yet surprisingly modern feeling result with the hops. Best Sam beer I've had in ages.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass bestate before June 2016. Pours a lively orange, with a half inch white head, that leaves plenty of lace behind.

Smell pine, tangerine, apricot, pepper, lemon, and a grapefruit.

Taste follows very well huge pine, apricot, lemon, upfront gives way to grapefruit and it might be pepper but a very zesty sharp earthy flavor Hallertau Noble hops.

Mouthfeel is medium, nice amount of life, maybe slightly dry, and the drinkability is amazing for its size.

Overall I remember the Imperial Pilsner and this reminds me a lot of that, that was before BA and I remember my palate being destroyed, now this still excellent, but not as intense.

Pours a golden orange with a white head with good retention and some nice lace.

Smells bright citrus and floral hops backed by some sweet honey and malt.

Taste is resinous pine, lemon, orange, honey, and whole grain bread. A very big interesting beer.

A- pours a clear deep golden color with a one finger foamy white head that retains long after the pour, leaving some lacing behind

S- citrusy and spicy hop aroma, with herbal & earthy notes, along with orange peel. Clean malty undertones

T- spicy citrusy hop flavor follow the nose up front, with highlights of orange marmalade, tangerine peel, along with some peppery notes. Mid-palate brings slightly sweet malt that continues through to the finish, leaving a longer if more spicy citrus

M- medium thick body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a viscous finish, light longer of alcohol

O- bold Pilsner with a nice showcase of the Hallertau hop

Rich and full, but crisp. Sweet, floral, and a bit perfumey, but an enjoyable "double" pilsner. Prost!

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a semi-hazy amber color. The head is a finger high, with an off-white shade and a frothy texture. Retention is very good, and hints of lacing are left on the glass.

Smell: For a second, I'd almost think it uses American hops, given its grapefruit character. But immediately after, big notes of apricot, black pepper, and grass remind me of its noble nature. The malt backbone is fairly subdued, but not nonexistent. This isn't a style I usually favor, but I will admit that this smells really nice.

Taste: Hallertau is shown off quite well. It shows off a combination of grass, black pepper, and ginger; but more importantly, it provides significant notes of apricot and even grapefruit. The hop attack is balanced by its bready malt backbone, though a bit of grassy bitterness lingers past the finish. This isn't riddled with the off-notes I tend to get from imperial pilsners, ergo it's pretty damn good.

Mouthfeel: Fuller in body compared with other pilsners (duh), and sweeter, too. It's still a dry and easy to drink beer, don't get me wrong. Put it like this, it drinks the way an imperial pilsner should drink. Carbonation is fairly gentle, as well.

Overall: One of my main beliefs about the biggest craft brewery of them all (Boston Beer Company) is that their lagers are superior to their ales. Another belief is that the Hallertau Imperial Pilsner of days gone by was probably made out of the tears of angels and the nectar of gods. I wouldn't really use that to describe this beer I'm drinking, but I'm still enjoying this one a good deal. It shows off its single hop well without being moronic. Note to Sam Adams: this one is a keeper.

A- gold, clear, sticky lacing.
S- honey, melon, hints of mango, flour.
T- sweet pale aleish. Green tea, peach, mango, honeydew, slight peppery spice.
M- low to mid carb. Wet and a bit sticky,
Much like an hopped up pale ale.
O- great beer, seems like they took an ipa type recipe toned it down a bit and added a super clean Czech lager yeast. Maybe some grains of paradise. Gotta give it to them they know their Lagers.
