Style: Pumpkin Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally used as a source of fermentable sugars in brewing, today we add pumpkin to our beer, well, because it tastes good. Roasted malts and real pumpkin - about 20 lbs of it per barrel - give this beer body and sweetness, while spices like clove, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg warm you up on a crisp fall day.

Pours a dark amber/pale reddish-brown (almost mahogany with reddish hues), producing barely a finger of foamy, tan, shortlived head that leaves only a few motes & wisps of lace. Aroma is caramel & cereal malt with burnt hints, pumpkin & pumpkin pie spices especially cinnamon, nutmeg & ginger, though not listed cloves seem to be there also. The taste is grain & roasted malt, caramel, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon & pumpkin. Reminiscent of watery Dr. Pepper, it has a dark bready malt background. Aftertaste is clean for a pumpkin ale, slightly bitter with a thin spiciness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation, slick, prickly throughout.

Appearance: Ruby amberish red. Beautiful color for a Fall seasonal.

Smell: Typical pumpkin spices, nutmeg and allspice being dominant with a hint of cinnamon. Smells sweet and bready.

Taste: Very nice balance of actual pumpkin taste with the bite that comes from the generous amount of spices used in this. This checks off a lot of boxes in the list to make a classic pumpkin beer, and it does it all very well in the well rounded taste. Leans much more towards pumpkin pie than real pumpkin though, but the bready toasted malts in the background make this a perfect desert beer that isn't cloyingly sweet. Surprisingly hot from the spices, and as such it almost drinks like a more boozy imperial brew.

Mouth Feel: Medium body, with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall: Sam Adams gets a lot of flak, but they know how to make excellent beer. This beer may not wow anybody, but it is a near perfect example of what the style is all about. The fact that they manage to bring in so much flavor with such a low ABV is a testament to their skill.

L: Clear dark amber color with a thin creamy tan head.

S: A little bit of caramel malt and of course some notes of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.

T: Very similar to the nose. Caramel malt followed by pumpkin spices. Spices linger for awhile.

F: Creamy for the most part but has a bit of bite from the carbonation and spices.

O: Not a bad pumpkin ale. The spices are fairly subtle. That can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. This allows it to be pretty drinkable and doesn't overwhelm your palate with spices. The pumpkin itself seems to give it a fairly full body and some creaminess that is pleasant when it starts to get cool outside.

I bought a six-pack of 20 Pounds of Pumpkin, poured in to a Sam Adams Ultimate Beer Glass.

Pores a shiny amber color, clear with a thin creamy head.

Smell is a sweet caramel and pie spice aroma.

Taste is a lot like the aroma, sweet bread and caramel flavors, with cinnamon, nutmeg and other pumpkin pie spices. Mild biter-sweet finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodies, not too cloying, with a wet sweat aftertaste,

Overall a decent pumpkin flavored beer. I'm not a big fan of the style, or pumpkin for that matter, But this is a nice fall seasonal.

Ginger dominant aroma, with squash notes, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Caramel malt accents.

Flavor is toasted and caramelly sweet, with underlying squash savoriness and muted spice.

12oz bottle poured into SA glass

A- pours a clear deep copper color with one one-finger creamy off-white head that had good retention

S- malty sweet base gives notes of caramel and brown bread, complimented by spice aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg & clove

T- plenty of bready, caramel sweet malt follows the nose up front, followed by a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg. The finish gives more malty sweetness, with notes of pumpkin meat and a hint of dark fruit

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a velvety finish, high drinkability

O- plenty of mealtimes throughout balanced the slices nicely, well done

Another SA offering another pretty good brew, and this one a pumpkin ale...

I am making it a point to try as many pumpkin beers as I can this Fall season. Though I have had my share of SAs over the years, their pumpkin beer, this one in particular, I have not tried. That is until now. It is a very nice looking beer, reddish hue with little head, no staying power, and no lacing to speak of. The smell is distinctive as it is the best smelling pumpkin beer I have had, as though I were smelling a pumpkin pie, though not as sweet. The mouthfeel was a mix of high carbonation at the front end, which then quickly dissipated to a thick feeling liquid at the back, interesting to say the least. The taste was mostly pumpkin but lightly infused with an ale flavor that was neither great nor bad, though still good overall. I'm glad I picked up a sixer of this to enjoy over the next couple of weeks.

Pretty yummy. A dark copper, almost brown. A delightful nose of pumpkin pie spice, malt, chocolate. The taste follows, a light bright mouthfeel.

This is really quite a nice pumpkin beer. Spices are in just the right proportions with a smooth creamy pumpkin mouthfeel (if there is such a thing as pumpkin mouthfeel).

Not too shabby, though if you're looking for a pumpkin ale that has a strong pumpkin flavor, this is not the beer for you. It's actually pretty similar to SA's Oktoberfest beer. Autumn spices and a very subtle pumpkin taste and aroma make it a nice little beer for a Fall afternoon watching football. If you're searching for a true pumpkin ale, however, you should look elsewhere.
