Black color. White head, not too thick but probably the thickest of all their Winter Classic beers. Slight chocolate aroma. Full-bodied stout with a lacey feel to it. Not a whole lot of flavor, though, a bit disappointing in that department.

This one pours a fairly dark brown, with a small white, and not much lacing.

This smells like chocolate, oats, and light roast. It doesn't smell particularly punchy.

This is definitely drinkable, but it's quite boring and watery. There's mostly chocolate and roast, with a creamy finish.

This is light bodied, but the flavor just falls off at the finish.

This is worth a try if you don't have to pay for it.

From the latest iteration of the Sam Winter sampler. I miss the Holiday Porter, but its an otherwise solid lineup.

A little thin in texture, and maybe not as smooth as I would desire for the style, but features the slightly sour malts and smoky, peaty, complexity in the aftertaste that is a hallmark of the style. Not too shabby.

Nice beer but not the best that Sam Adams has to offer. A great feeling on a cold day with an oatmeal beer and almost makes you hungry for oatmeal itself

12oz bottle bb April 2018 poured into a perfect pint glass at fridge temp 5.5% ABV 25 IBU. The beer pours dense black with mocha brown head.
Retention and lacing are above average. Aroma is almost nothing at fridge temp. It starts to give a little roast malt smell as it warms. The taste is roasty yet smooth. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and undry in the finish. Overall, a good oatmeal stout, but nothing to go crazy for. This might be the most absolutely average beer to style I've ever had.

From the 2017 Winter Classics variety pack. Very dark brown with a finger of tan head that leaves some mild lacing down the glass. The aroma is a little earthy with roasted malt, chocolate, and sweet cream, rounding it out. The flavor is all of those, not really getting that creamy oatmeal vibe, and there is a lasting, building, bitterness to the beer that I was not expecting. Most oatmeal stouts, I like, lean more to the sweet side. I'd say this is pretty balanced between them, but that bitterness is undeniable. The feel is well carbonated, with a thinner body, and dry. Overall, I think it needs a little more body, more chocolate malt sweetness, and oats, for sure.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 4/2018. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, molasses, smoke, char, dark fruits, herbal, wood, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, molasses, smoke, char, dark fruits, herbal, wood, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/grassy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted oats, dark/brown bread, nuttiness, light smoke/dark fruit, herbal, wood, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Mildly increasing dryness from hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a very nice Oatmeal stout. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Nicely rich feeling for the ABV. Very well rounded malt complexity, with mild complementing English yeast character and balancing English hops. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.
