Shared bottle at 504 1-yr anniversary party. Absolutely delish but drinks more like a liqueur than a beer. Glad finally got to try it.

Served room temperature, Utopias is clear, tiger-eye brown. The appearance is pretty close to bourbon, with clear legs and no carbonation.

The nose brings a surprising complexity, and none of the earthy, peaty, funky or musty decrepit smells I had expected--I've tasted some really poor attempts at spirit-strength beers from other large breweries that set my expectations pretty low. Utopias scoffs at all that noise, and exhibits welcoming caramel, vanilla, leather and prune at first. Some bourbon and Madeira heat is quick to indicate its strength, followed by wet wood, walnut, musty cherry, and coconut.

Taste starts with sweet, round and smooth caramel and vanilla. Bourbon and Madeira flavors bring some heat, but it is fairly mild, allowing attributes of raisin, cocoa, toffee, cigar skin and smoke to shine. A nice maple aftertaste lingers long after the swallow.

Feel is slick yet tingly on the tongue, finishing semi-dry, and gliding with a soft burn down the hatch.

Impressively, Utopias imparts all of the positive attributes of barrel aging beer without allowing any of the actual attributes of beer to survive, and while also not being too boozy. I really can't knock such a unique convergence.

While not quite a beer, utopias is perfection in a glas. Pours a deep ruby tinged deep brown, still beer, HUGE alcohol legs. Nose is boozy toffee, maple, caramel.Taste is insanity. The booze, toffee, and maple run consistent, but every taste brings something different. Figs, cherries, apple skins, prunes are among the ever evolving flavors. The beer is thick and heavy.
overall, my favorite beer ever. EVER.

So different from almost any other beer. So intense and so complex. Pitch black and no head whatsoever. Molasses, raisin, and brandy dominate the nose and palate, with slight background tones of hazelnut and spice. Mouthfeel is full, and the finish gives a little heat and kick. The best part about it is that the taste lingers on your tongue and air passages for a couple minutes after each sip ... reminiscent of a good 25 year scotch. One of a kind, must try!
