Part of a winter ampler 12-pack. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper color with a thin white head.

Smell is a candy scent. Caramel and butter scotch.

Taste is a sweet bread flavor. Mild hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is thin and a little watery.

Overall a nice amber. Not really a winter brew. Similar to the Oktoberfest.

I was really stoked when I saw this in the singles section at one of our local Giant Food Stores & so I snapped one up for drinking & review. Why was I excited? Well, I was at our local county homebrewers' club meeting on Tuesday night for a homebrewers' bracketology challenge in which teams had brewed concoctions made with ingredients chosen semi-randomly a couple months ago. Some were real oddballs and were getting voted out as my table lamented that the hoppier beers were the winners & then looked at me & wondered why I had voted for the oddballs. I like ALL beers on some level, even if they are just cold, wet & available on a hot, humid summer's day. I am also a self-described, self-avowed hophead, but I get the sentiment behind 21st Amendment's Blah Blah Blah IPA & so I was voting for new & unusual tastes, not just hops, hops & more hops. That is not to suggest that I think that this beer will taste unusual, just not super hoppy, if at all. I get excited easily. Dilly dilly!

From the bottle: "Malty Caramel Notes & a Crisp Finish".

I Pop!ped the cap off of this fresh bottle & began a heavy-handed pour. This resulted in the formation of three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head that slowly fell, leaving great lacing in its wake. Color was Amber (duh!) to Deep Amber/Light Coppper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was malty, but less sweet than earthy & bready. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. They nailed it with regard to the taste: caramel, definitely, but not cloyingly sweet, either. Instead, it retained a cereal-like breadiness to accompany the caramel taste. Mmm. Finish was semi-sweet but very drinkable and quite smooth. A great find for the holidays.

Not a huge bock fan. Not bad though.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of April 2018. Sampled on November 22, 2017.

This is a handsome looking beer with its copper-amber pour under a quick lasting white head that leaves a little lacing. Decent clarity. I wanted better head retention though.

The aroma is sweet, baked caramel malts and toasted white bread with a low to no hop profile. It smells like the style suggests it should.

Medium, smooth body.

The taste is sweet with caramel malts like the aroma suggests and there is clean, crisp finish to it. Some toast. I found it be enjoyable.

Amber color, lot of rising bubbles, not much head. Sweet bready aroma. Flavor generally matches, some caramel notes settled on a robust malt backbone. Perhaps a little too sweet for my licking, but I suppose that’s accurate for the style, so that’s just more of my tastes.

Another variety pack, another SA I haven't had and now have had the pleasure to try...

I'll just come right out and mention this is certainly better than Michelob's Amber Bock - way better. But compared to others I've had, it probably in the middle-of-the-pack. Nice dark caramel coloration but with weak foam and no staying power. It was hard for me to pull out anything notable, but I did detect a distant twinge of caramel and maybe some roasted malts. Mouthfeel and taste were good, I did enjoy it. However, overall it was a better than okay beer, nothing special. Definitely good to have on hand though during this holiday season...
