This traditional rauchbier’s delicate balance of beechwood smokiness and toasty malts make it the perfect beer for sitting around a fire pit with friends or warming up on a chilly night.

4/20/20...reddish brown, very light low foam, mostly settled. Malty notes, toasty. Some sweetness. Faded smoke. Sweet malty open that spills into a rauch like smokiness. Cloys a little, smoky finish. Almost no bittering or bite. So so.

12-oz bottle into Guinness tankard

A - 1 finger of khaki over a transparent body of copper amber

S - smoke, malt sweetness, wood

T - smoke, light malt sweetness, balanced hop bitterness

M - smooth medium body, medium carbonation

O - I had hoped for a little more complexity. Not terrible--more or less a Boston Lager with smoke added.

Dark oxidized copper color with a modest sized head of beige bubbles. Decent lace. True rauchbier scents, smoky, with hints of peat and malt. Light sweet malt start, slow progression of smoke builds.

As New Samuel Adams Beer Sunday, It's Gonna Be a Long Trail (Week 706) rambles on, I am listening to Alpha Blondy & my ghost companion is suggesting that today may run deeper than I had initially anticipated. Kenny Longshore was a fellow plankowner & shipmate aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60) as well as a fellow member of the SDBG. We attended the 25-year reunion in Norfolk, VA in 2014 & upon returning to his home in Whidbey Island, WA, he laid down for a nap & never awoke. I went back to Norfolk to assist in scattering his ashes at sea from the fantail of the Normandy & his widow was telling me about how much he enjoyed following my exploits. When I returned home, his ghost was awaiting me, perched atop a box of beer near my kitchen door & he is a regular visitor when I am drinking at home. We are joined by other fallen shipmates & even my late Pops on occasion, but Kenny is a regular. He kept pointing down towards the box upon which he was perched & it suddenly dawned on me. That shall follow, but for now, it is time for one of my favorite beer styles ...

From the Bottle: "Toasty malt & Beechwood Smoke"; "Proud to be Independent. American. Craft."; "20 IBUs".

I was literally shaking with excitement at the anticipation of drinking this one! I kid you not, ever since I first tasted Rauchbier, I have been fascinated with Smoke(d) Beers. I usually like them with smoked oysters and/or smoked salmon on crackers, but I'll be okay drinking this one unadorned. I Pop!ped the cap & gave it a C-line pour into the awaiting S.A. glass. I have long liked these glasses, having received one on their initial release as a BA Magazine subscriber, but now I am beginning to find them on the secondary market (flea markets, yard sales, rummage/attic sales, etc) & you can bet that I am snapping them up! This type of aggro pour causes the beer to nucleate upon coming in contact with the stippled bottom, releasing a massive head. In this case, I got just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, light-tan head with decent retention, but the resulting lacing was fantastic! Color was a gorgeous Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity & deep-Amber highlights. Gorgeous! Nose smelled like candied bacon or bacon jelly & if you don't know what I am alluding to, getcha some! Smoky & sweet, just the way I like it. Mmm. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not far beyond it, either. The taste was moderately smoky, but I could have gone MUCH bigger. Still, it isn't like the shelves are just brimming with Smoke Beers & since Koch's is a monetary concern, he has to keep it appealing to everyone. This was on the lightly-smoked end of the spectrum, but still definitely a Smoked Beer. Finish was smoky and dry & I was ready for a meaty, salty snack. Mmm.

Picked up a couple of these as part of the Winter mixed pack at TW Arrowhead on 3-1-18. Best by May; cold stored since purchase.

Beer poured an amber brown with an okay head initially but faded quickly.

Nose is smoked malts forward, nothing much more beyond that.

Taste is a decent amount of smokiness imparted, with the classic Boston Lager flavor profile which is a smooth lightly hopped and malted brew.

Mouthfeel is pretty smooth.

Overall not a bad brew, nothing special. Not a style that i desire often but was fun to try.

Samuel Adams Smoked Lager brewed by Boston Beer Company ,with an ABV of 5.00% This Smoked Beer pours out a deep copper brown color with a nice off white head. This brew was poured into a pint beer glass from a 12oz bottle. There is also some nice lacing to this brew, it sticks to the side of the glass well. The smell of Smoked Lager is rich with roasted grains and malts. You do pick up on smoky notes in the smell along with hops. So far this is a nice inviting brew. Now for the taste, it is Bold with flavors, you first pick up on the roasted/ smoked flavors from the grains and malts. The smoked beechwood is a nice touch to this brew, not overwhelming at all. The body of Smoked Lager is a Solid medium. This brew would go nice with dinner or on a cool day. There is nothing overpowering about smoked Lager it has a super nice balance to it. The mouth feel is Bold, Rich, Smoked , Roasted Clean and Refreshing. Overall I'm going to give this brew a 4.25 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams), did a real nice job with this brew.

Seriously, I cannot for the life of me figure out how this beer has positive ratings of any sort. It's one of the most repulsive beers I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. I can't give any fancy details about the head, color, lacing, etc because I would never waste a chilled pint glass on this cheap garbage Samuel Adams beer. What it comes down to is this... Samuel Adams Smoked Lager tastes like drinking rancid smoked ham, and it's repulsive and causes an instant gag reflex so you'd better be near a restroom. I'm lucky I was able to swallow a sip without vomiting. Seriously, there are so many good beers out there... walk away from this immediately.
