This one is a nice amber color with an off-white head. Head sticks around for a while before fading and leaving nice lacing behind. The smell is heavy on the coffee. There is also the aroma of bready malt, but definitely coffee dominates the smell. Taste is heavy coffee, but with a sweet, cream flavor present...not overly bitter. Some light hop presence in the end, but it's muted. The body seemed light to me. Overall, I was curious to see what Sam Adams would do with this one. I was surprised at how much coffee taste there was as Sam tends to be more muted with some of their flavors. Not a bad beer, all in all.

meh, i had higher hopes for this one too, so far with the spruce, the two most exciting ones in the box, at least on paper, both are less than fully awesome. this one has a slightly oxidized coffee thing to it, and whats more, is that it doesnt taste brewed to me, it tastes like some sort of concentrate that has been sweetened. i get a tootsie roll sort of waxy chocolate complexion right there with the java both in nose and taste, which lends an artificiality that i dont love. it does have a subtle hop profile, a c type, higher alpha, older school northwestern thing that i like, columbus maybe, and quite a bit more medium crystal maltiness than we need in a pale ale, again, sam adams being overly safe and malty with one of these, it seems like thats always the case, a paler grain bill would yield a more unimpeded coffee profile and thus a better beer i think. i get toffee and chocolate here, both thin and still light, but it seems a little forced too. good carbonation, a little sweetness to it as it drinks, and a long lasting oddly bitter finish which kind of rises up out of nowhere. i wanted this to be a morning beer for the winter, comfy couch, heavy blanket, snow flurries, slippers, books, this beer, but it defintiely doesnt live up to that billing and is kind of a one and done for me unfortunately. i know these guys can do it, i just wonder why they dont sometimes. seems like an effort to appeal to the fringe craft drinker rather than the discerning craft palate, but thats just my two cents...

I taste some coffee notes, not too strong, but they’re there. Otherwise a decent, but unremarkable pale ale.

Pours a cloudy copper color. Body is about medium with average, somewhat prickly carbonation.
The aroma is roasted coffee beans, toffee/ caramel, roasted malt , with a little cereal, grain, cracker .
Taste is black coffee, caramel / toffee. The malt is definitely part of the flavor but it doesn't dominate or cover up the other flavors . There's a very slight sweetness with almost no hop bitterness. There is some bitterness from the roasted coffee.
This is probably the most I've enjoyed a beer from Samuel Adams in a long time.

Poured Amber into a frozen pub glass. About 2 finger lacing. Maintained head very well. Roasted lingering notes and very crispy. This is good.

I was very surprised by this beer. It sounded terrible, but tasted great. A great fall seasonal. Coffee and chocolate flavors, no pale ale fruit notes to speak of, and a mild hop presence as well. I usually think of coffee in porters and stouts, but this pale, or perhaps brown ale is very good.
