A: Pours an amber color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a thin cap

S: Some pine, spruce, and caramel malt up front along with a touch of bread

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the pine and spruce and then goes into a bit of caramel and bready malt sweetness. Finishes with lingering spruce and bread

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: An interesting lager for sure. You either like spruce in your beer or you don't. Easy enough to drink regardless

Part of a Fall sampler 12-pack. Poured in to a pint glass. A tarnished gold color with a small white head. Sweet floral aroma. Sweet flavor, spruce I guess, with a mild bitter finish. Slightly cloying feel. A nice but somewhat heavy lager.

I wanted to like this more. It looked good after pouring, a nice gold color, well carbonated, nice ivory head. Smell was missing the spruce. The aroma reminded me more of an AAL...grain, corn, sweet malt. Taste was similar to nose. It seemed like an amped up AAL. Clean, crisp lager, but again, no spruce. Medium body held the beer together. Overall, it's what I fear from many Sam Adams beers: muted flavors. An OK lager if that was the billing, but lacking emphasis on flavors that would make it stronger...like spruce!

Poured into half pint glass: color is light amber, great effervescence, head is light tan with fine to small bubbles, head presents about 1/2 inch thick and lingers well with good lacing.

Smell is quite malty, but its pretty neutral - mainly light toast and biscuit, no spruce notes.

Taste is similar with prominent malt but it seems to fall in between types maybe some pale and munich like malts, spruce is still quite limited and would be hard to identify if it was not highlighted in the name.

Mouthfeel is pretty full, moderate to strong carbonation with a lingering presence that mixes sweet malt and hop/spruce bitterness.

Overall a miss in terms of 'spruce' flavoring, decent lager background but mouthfeel is distracting.

LOOKS: A clear, deep golden/light amber, with a small cap of foam that dissipates quickly. Mild lacing.
AROMA: Toasted grain, grass, and just a hint of pine/spruce.
TASTE: German hops come through nicely; grassy. Spruce isn't really there in the flavor, at all.
FEEL: Well carbonated, medium thin body, and dry.
OA: Where is the spruce?

these guys just cant get away from making a malty lager for some reason. i looked forward to this one, and was all ready for it to be light and bright and fresh, but it really isnt any of that. the spruce seems kind of light and faded, even a little fakey to me, while the malt body and flavor of the beer easily overwhelms the parts of this that would otherwise have the potential to be refreshing, which is a let down for me. i see this more for the spring than the fall actually, in sort of a malty march bock type lager situation, still wintery, not about to be wintery, if that makes any sense. its crystal clear with a high rising white head and fine retention and bubbles, but also a little more of a caramel shade than it needs, i wish they left that out, it really does add an unneeded sweetness and richness to the flavor, it also lasts through the finish longer than the spruce, which i really dont agree with if it was an intentional decision. the spuce lingers sort of chemical to me too, really not what i wanted out of this. i hope its faded a bit, but its also not real old, no excuse for the proportionality of this, its like conservative to the point that its ruined. still drinking it, so not totally ruined, but this had a lot more potential in it as a recipe than was ever realized here i am afraid...

Taste: crisp, slight sweet, gentle notes of spruce or pine, caramel malts, low hopped. Mellow malt nose. Golden hue, clear, with a very delicate head and webbed lace. Medium light body. 14 IBUs

No flavor of spruce or pine, as the label claims. Tastes just like an average bland lager.

I poured it into a frozen pilsner. Hardly any lacing and no lingering head. It is crispy with carbonation. However, I'm not getting the pine notes I was hoping for. I got it as part of the Fall Pack. Won't buy it as a 6.
