It's rare that I assess a Sam Adams beer as a bad beer, but this one qualifies. The spruce is undetectable on the nose or palette and falls far short of other spruce beers I have tried. Very thin and watery. If I closed my eyes, I would think I was drinking some kind of macro lager, which doesn't say much for this beer. Definitely the worst of the 2018 Fall variety pack.

I picked this one up in a 12 pack that had 6 different SA beers. I am not a real fan of the original Sam Adam's, but this was surprisingly good. Like Sam, I am not a fan of a lot of IPA stuff, so it is nice to find a lager that had a little snap without the bitter hop notes. The additional spruce is a nice touch that added a little citrus, but not overwhelmingly so. This has very bitterness, a tad sweet

A clear medium to light amber with a white head dissipates quickly to a film and then to a ring. My olfactory prowess is limited, but instead of the evergreen air freshener aroma I had expected, it smells pretty much like regular beer. It is nicely carbonated and tastes like... beer. There is a slight piney taste but if I weren't looking for it, I wouldn't have noticed it. Someone with a more sensitive sniffer than mine might smell or taste the spruce in the name, but I don't. It's not a knock-yer-socks-off beer, but it's okay. I have no qualms about drinking the other one that came in the sample pack I bought.

12 oz bottle in Florida. BB date notched March 2019.
Pours clear with a sparkling amber body topped by a very good a decent tan head.
A mild lager with a rather minimal contribution from spruce.
Feel: crisp medium-light body with medium carbonation and a dry finish.

DATE: November 18, 2018... OCCASION: tough to follow up last night's Brew Fest at Tom's, so I won't try--instead, I will try this new brew... GLASSWARE: Sam Adams lager... this one wows out the bottle with a fire storm of swirling bubbles, giving rise to a two-finger head of snow-white fluff... its body is light orange, almost brassy.... aroma of hedge, branch, copper pipe, and a bit of caramel... rather thin and flat, despite its lively appearance... a bit bubbly at the throat, with a token shake at the teeth... sips at a deprecating rate, without much to chew on, soak in or consider.... I am struggling to put this is any light: its spiciness is soft, apologetic; its "spruce" really doesn't approach detectable levels, and its malts don't bring that trademark Boston Lager caramel--its sweetness is nominal... in fact, this borderlines on a rinser, which shocks me, as I am talking about talking about THE Sam Adams... kinda disappointing, but only two of these in the mix box means this one won't be long to be gone...

Another underwhelming beer from the mixed pack. Malt notes with some bittiness and a little citrus. Overall it was a mild beer with little going on. I was expecting some stand out flavor but it was just average.

I'm trying this at my old neighbor house in The 'Wego. It poured a clear golden with no head and no lace. The scent had very faint pine. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is an ok beer.

Pours an effervescent bronze with 2+ fingers of fast-falling cream colored head.

S: Grassy, corny

T: Medicinal Spruce up front, grassyness, a little breadyness up front. Some medicinal notes as this warms along with bready sweetness, a touch of leafy hops as well. Finishes a little dry with a touch of pine & bready sweetness

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation

Drinks easy enough, just not that interesting. Glad I only bought a single

Pours a pale copper color with a puffy off white head that settled into a sparse cap.

The aroma is of a buttery malt. Kind of a general lager yeast scent. A bit of a pepper spice.

The taste is of a bready malt. Some toffee notes. Fruity notes from the yeast. A bit of a peppery spice from what I assume is the spruce.

The feel is moderate with fizzy carbonation. Lightly sweet on the palate with some spice in the finish.

Average beer. Would have thought the spruce would have stood out more.

No flavor of spruce or pine, as the label claims. Tastes just like an average bland lager.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass, clear, golden color with a 1 finger head and lots of bubbles. Head dissipates quickly. Nose is similar to a Summer wheat beer. Tastes like it smells with almost no spruce flavor. Seems more like a Summer beer than a Fall offering. Good, but not great. Nothing really stands out. Would not turn it down if offered again, but pribably would not seek it out.
