Pours an aged copper penny color with thin off white head, but decent lacing. Smell and taste is of freshly roasted grains with a touch of yeast, bread, dark fruit and spice. Medium body, fully carbonated. Nothing complex, but just a pretty good beer from Sam Adams.

Twelve ounce bottle purchased as part of Fall Harvest collection twelve pack. Poured into a pint glass. Best by date of January 2010. Pours a hazy reddish brown topped with about two fingers of cream colored head. It recedes rather quickly to leave a small cap. There's a little activity in the glass, but not much.

Plenty of clove in the aroma, as well a good amount of malted wheat. Smells of fruit are there too, including a slight bit of banana.

Taste follows the nose pretty closely. Predominately malted wheat. Spicy cloves come next. Sweet fruits are there, but indistinguishable. Finishes slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Pretty creamy. Carbonation is a little low for the style. I would expect it to be a little more crisp and effervescent. Slightly dry on the finish.

Pretty good overall. It goes down easy, but it's not really something I would want to drink all night. I would like to see a little more sweetness in the way of fruity flavors and a little more carbonation. A solid addition to the Samuel Adams line.

i poured it into a glass it was a nice medium brown color with a nice head then floats to a nice thin lace. Have a nice smell of malts and a hint of fruit. Has a nice crisp malty, fruity flavor. Has a little of a heavy mouth feel on the back of the tongue. I think it is very drinkable. I really enjoy this beer, another good one from SA.

Reviewed from Notes, sampled 11/11/09

This beer poured an opaque brown body with a white head.

Nose is a mixture of yeast, chocolate, mild fruits and wheat.

Taste is medium bodied with a rich creamy mouthfeel. Yeast, banana, bubblegum, tropical fruits, some ovaltine like chocolate flavors. That's about it. Very simple, but it's all there.

A solid Dunkelweis from Sam Adams. Not a German version at all, but pretty damn good, and very drinkable. Just a solid American Dunkelweizen session beer.

I was impressed when it was like a German style since I had tried other American Wheat beers. Pours red brown in color with a decent head. Taste is very yeasty with slight fruit notes, maybe dark fruits. It is very drinkable, if it comes in 6-packs I would buy it just for a regular. Impressive wheat from SA

From the Brewmaster's Fall Collection series, 6 beers, 2 bottles per ½ case. Poured in to a weizen glass.

Pours a nut brown color with orange hues. The beer is slightly hazy, and appears mildly carbonated with a few bubbles rising in the glass. Two-finger frothy beige head is fairly resilient.

The smell is a dairy aroma, like sweet cream, bit f a musty grain scent, with some soft fruit notes.

Taste is a toasted bread wheat flavor up front, with a light roasted nut taste along side and mild bitterness on the fiinish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly cloying.

A very drinkable beer, especially in the autumn season. I don't think I'd make a habit of the style, but it is a nice change of pace.

Pours from the bottle an interesting purple-orange color. About a finger of off-white head results, but dissipates to nothing in a moment. Really a wealth of fruit aromas in the nose, from tart green apples and banana to plum and grapes, all backed by a delicious yeasty smell.

Tastes very good, but not quite as full-flavored as I'd have liked given the promising aromas. Bready flavors all-around with flashes of apple and white grape. Mouthfeel is well-carbonated and a little on the light side, which is how I often find SA beers. Just a touch of bitterness to end each sip. Overall, a tasty beer that I'd enjoy drinking again.

12oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint. Best by Feb. 2010. Thanks to BeerFMAndy for the trade.

(A)- Pours a murky brown color that produced no head, barely even some gray bubbles.

(S)- Rather bland. Some caramelized lemon & banana.

(T)- Plenty of banana bread with a twist of lemon.

(M)- Crisp carbonation level that almost fizzes on the tongue. A decent balance; just not much going on.

(D)- Would not be my first choice for a Dunkelweisse, but decent enough to have a few of.

Pour - beautiful reddish brown in color with almost an inch of thick vanilla icing colored foam on top. Seems so innocent in the glass, like it could be a very "sessionable" brown ale.

Aroma - big aroma of baked apples and Bartlett pears along with cinnamon, clove, pipe tobacco and caramel.

Taste - it truly is amazing that the estery/fruit flavors that come out in this beer are produced by wheat and yeast. The fruit flavors are that of juicy pears, bananas and cooked apples with a touch of spice (although there is no spice added) and some nice warmth. It reminds me a bit of the liquid that holds the inside of an apple pie together. Nice dry, crisp finish.

Overall - it lacks some body and complexity. It is however a decent, quite drinkable unfiltered dark wheat beer that just may push some Sam Adams drinkers to try some more unique beer styles.

Would I buy more of it? - hmm, tough call as I'd have to buy the entire 12-pack. I'm leaning towards no.

Pours a dark copper body with a rocky white head. Aromas of spicy yeast esters and toasted malts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a tingly level of carbonation. Flavors of sweet caramel and dried cherries. There's a very low bitterness in the finish. Pretty good drinkability.

A - Dark, cloudy amber color. Off-white fluffy head.

S - Malty and fruity.

T - Very clean taste reminiscent of German beers and their purity laws. Strong maltiness only slightly roasted with hints of dark fruits.

M/D - Clean, smooth, some slight carbonation, great feel and taste throughout the palate. Great beer and very drinkable.

A - Medium brown body that's got a nice haze to it. The head is frothy and very light tan with its one inch stature. This is a good looking brew.

S - Molasses, syrup, malt, hops, and a background of alcohol.

T - Smooth wheat flavor accented by a slightly brown sugar sweetness. There's a maltiness to this beer that really makes it appealing.

M - Smooth as it goes down real easy.

~ This is a good brew. It has a certain sessionability to it. I recommend you try this one.

When I grabbed one of the lingering Harvest Collection 12-packs at the local grocer, this was the one I most looked forward to trying. While I love Sam's Octoberfest, I am usually quickly sold on any Dunkels, so I admit my proclivities ahead of time. Yet this does not disappoint, a fine representative of the style and one I wish Sam Adams would market in sixers.

Solid, durable off-white head rests atop a rich, cloudy caramel brown body. Good duration and lacing, and we're off to a fine start. Sweet nose, rife with banana and toffee, and the malt is amply represented. Good taste, on the sweet end which is fine. Banana carries the day, with toffee and dark chocolate in tow. Well done, but it could be a bit bolder.

Sam's Dunkel comes together in the mouthfeel, a typically strong suit for Sam Adams in my humble opinion. This is perhaps the best aspect of the beer, for here is where it nails the style with a nearly ideal blend of the pillowy wheat texture combined with the good malt flavor and tongue coating--terrific balance. Superb.

This is one beer Sam Adams ought to plug in six-packs. One of their best new beers in some time, I gladly boasted about it to a cashier the next time I grabbed a 12 at the store. Very good, and well worth trying.

This is really good!

It is almost like a mixture between a bock or brown ale and a hefeweizen.

Has a cloudy but not too dark brown color and a bit of a head.

Smells like a hefeweizen would but with hints of something i cant quite pin.

Tastes of bananas but not heavily and has almost a citrus taste to it.

I would buy this again, if I could find it in a six pack.

pours out a deep russet colour...cloudy, hazy and quite beautiful with a half inch head that sticks and is supported by some fine carbonation. whispy rings of lace. lots of berries in the nose, followed by some spicy phenolic whiffs..cloves, bananas and green apples. the taste is a mix of spicy wheat and yeast notes...light toffee and cocoa...clove and a banana/berry mix. not much back end hop bite...just a hint of floral/herbal bitterness. full bodied with a soft and lush mouthfeel. drinkability is very good, probably just because i fancy dunkelweizens and this is a nice domestic version that is respectable and tastes good.

this is a nice stab at a flavourful style which i quite like. sam adams (BBC) would be wise to put this in six packs. i know i would revisit this quite frequently because of the value of SA brews. definitely recommended.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: light tawny brown with a little haziness; attractive one-finger ivory head.

Smell: nice wheaty aroma with a little graininess; there's also a nice hint of something roasty/chocolatey, but it is very subtle.

Taste: somewhat sweet; the malt has a distinct and complex fruitiness right off the bat (berries, apples, citrus) which quickly fades into just a nice citrusy wheat. Hops are very subtle but are there to give just a little kick. There is even a tiny bit of chocolate in the mix, though there is also a hint of sourness which is not attributable to the citrus flavors. Other than that, this is a pretty tasty beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a nice level of carbonation. The bubbles are a little "big" to be really creamy, but it is still quite nice.

Drinkability: this dunkel is quite drinkable in my book. I got it in a harvest beers multipack but haven't seen it around here in sixers. I think I would buy it every so often if it were so available.

Pours a deep amber to brown color with a very full foamy cream colored head that settles to a thin coating over the beer. It's mostly clear throughout with only a little cloudiness.

It's smells a little of bananas with some cloves and yeasty spiciness. Loads of wheat malt with some caramel aromas mixed in. The aroma is one of the best qualities of this beer.

The taste is very sweet with no bitterness to be found. It has a light malty flavor with some citrus, wheat bread, clove a little banana and some yeasty flavors. The flavors definitely improve as the beer warms up. The spiciness comes through a lot more and becomes a little more complex. Overall it's not as full flavored as I would like.

It's very smooth and light bodied. It has very light carbonation with a nice finish that leaves a little lingering dryness.

This is a very drinkable beer, but is somewhat lacking in flavor. It's pretty good, but not as rich and complex as I would like. Like I said before, let it warm up a bit.

pours a nice copper reddish with a big head with staying powere. Lacing clings to the glass as it slowly recedes.
Wheta malts dominate. Seem to detect a bit of smokiness.
Fruity on the palate. Vanilla notes. Sweet malts with a nice balance of hops but not dominate.
The more I drink this one, the worse it gets.
Very cidery for some reason.

Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen is a cloudy tawny beer with a thin, dense, off white head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It smells spicy and a little sweet, with notes of clove, pear and raisins. It's medium bodied with a metallic feel. The finish is quick and a bit gritty. It has a mellow flavor of banana and pear, with a light, grassy bitterness. It seems like it will get sweet, but it doesn't. The aftertaste is musky. It's not bad.

Poured into a weiss glass, Nice 2 fingers of head, a whip cream type of head. Dark orange in color, head quickly disapates, beer hardly laces the glass. Kind of a bland apperance.

Crisp wheat smell with some fruityness to it. Earthy yeast smells as well. A good smelling brew.

No bitterness or bite what so ever. Smooth yeasty wheat flavor, some fruit notes and earthy undertones. Get some bananna after taste as well.

Really smooth medium in body. No bubbles on the back of the throat if it wasn't for the taste I would think I was drinking water.

12 oz bottle poured into a Weiss glass. Purchase before FEB 2010 notched on the label.

A - The yeast was rolled in the bottle for an even distribution on the calm pour. A four-finger cream-colored dollop of whipped-cream-like head rose up. Fantastic retention! The body is a hazy, muddy brown that, on it's own, doesn't look to appetizing. Half way through the glass the lacing started clinging heavily all over.

S - A lightly toasted malt aroma with the wheat is crisp and up-front. The yeasty character is bold and earthy smelling with a tiny bit of bubble gum esters in the background.

T - The first sip yields a full yeasty mouth with estery hints and a clean wheat and toasted malt flavor on the back end. Not bad but a bit shallow for a dunkel.

M - Medium-bodied, it flows down smooth and clean. Partially refreshing with a lightly dry finish.

D - Not a bad dunkel. It's appearance and nose don't represent the rest of the beer well though. After that it tapers off a bit making it less drinkable but I still wouldn't turn it down. Not bad, just a fair dunkelweizen.

A creamy light khaki head sits comfortably on a leathery tan colored body. The bready, malty aroma is loaded with cloves and bananas. Medium in body. A sweet malty front leads to an abundance of spicy (yeast) banana fruitiness. Some clove, brown sugar and a hint of molasses are there also in the flavor. The finish sees a return to that dominating banana flavor. Pretty solid for a dunkelweizen. I enjoyed this in the SA Harvest Collection, but I don't know if I'd go out of my way to pick this up if it were available in six packs.

Pours a clear medium brownish amber with a creamy tan head. Aroma is big on artificial banana with lesser notes of clove and vanilla. Flavor is also overbearing with the pure banana oil and clove, with no room for bready malt to even it out. Finish is a bit weak. Mouthfeel is surprisingly supple, similar to the authentic German versions. Some good qualities, some bad, overall a decent beer at best.

Decent one finger head with a decent retention. Light brown in color with some cloudiness.

Smell is primarily of clove. Banana is there, but is dominated by clove. Some caramel malt aroma exists as well.

Taste is of a nice caramel maltiness with a dryness on the palate as well. Clove comes through primarily with a nice banana fruitiness.

Dryness on the palate, but with a maltiness. Could be a little less attenuated to bring the beer around, which also effects drinkability.
