Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into a flute glass, this beer pours a mainly clear, pale, light to medium golden color with lots of streams of little bubbles fairly rapidly and continually rising to the beer's surface. Has a fluffy looking white head that's about an inch thick when first poured that eventually settles to a thin white ring lining inside of the glass at the beer's surface along with a thick coating of surface foam as well as some excellent lacing. Aromas of some zesty, bready malts along with some citrus notes, a bit of peppery spice, and hints of some herbal, grainy, slightly earthy, hops. A very similar flavor profile, with some zesty, bready malts that give way to some peppery spice notes and citrus that is rounded out with the aforementioned herbal, grainy, slightly earthy, hops that provide just the right amount of bitterness. A very well balanced flavor profile here indeed. Has an overall crisp, also somewhat smooth and frothy, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink with a clean finish. A very nice take on this style by the good folks at The Boston Beer Company.

Pours a two finger white head that fades slowly and leaves some lace. Almost clear amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is slight citrus and yeast. Flavor has some malty sweetness and citrus. Part of $9.99 mixed 6-pak from Shaw's Supermarket Concord, NH.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into an Accomplice IPA glass

L: Clear golden pour with thick foamy white head. Lasts a good while... nice lacing.

S: Grainy and rich. Some yeast and citrus mixed in.

T.F: German malts.. crackery grains. Citrus and lemongrass... hopping for modest bitterness. A bit of bread and yeast. Light bodied and well carbonated.

O: A tasty Helles... good flavor, easy drinking, and true to style. One I'd have again.

Poured from a standard, freshness dated Sam Adams' 12 oz. bottle: surprisingly deep golden with a slight haze-not typical for the style-with a nice, foamy white head. As this is a "seasonal" offering, I guess the brewery decided to take some liberties with the style.

Some husky, strong aromas of citrus - again not typical for the style.

The flavor simply leaves the style behind; that is not to say this is not a good and satisfying lager, as it has a nice bready and yeasty flavor with some hints of lemon and vanilla. However, it is slightly astringent with some citrus burn, and a lingering bitterness on the palate.

This product is advertised as an early spring seasonal, so I suppose that accounts for its hearty feel and higher alcohol content. I certainly enjoyed it, but at times, I wished for the authentic thing.
