Got a sample bottle from the representative. I wasn't really expecting too much from this beer, because I am not much of Sam Adams fan. But let me say it was much better than I thought it would be. It was bold, rich, and flavorful something I never thought I would say about a Sam Adams product. I will definitely be buying this beer if it comes to market.

Pours an extremely dark brown with a great, frothy, caramel colored head that retains very well. Terrific lacing. Smell is of coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla bean, roasty...quite nice. Taste is of more roastiness and coffee notes. Dark chocolate, hint of vanilla again, roasted malts, dry finish. Light hop spice in the finish too. This could be a bit more robust but it's still pleasant. Slight metallic flavor but nothing overt. Good carbonation. Definitely a very drinkable beer. It's a shame that this one didn't beat out the wheat beer this year. I would have loved to see how this one turned out. Shows lots of promise.

Poured with a great head over a dark liquid. Good head retention.
Smells of stale coffee and chocolate.
Tastes just like stale coffee. A roasted character is present but the beer is more sweet with vanilla and mocha.
A solid mouthfeel with good carbonation.
I split the bottle and still didnt finish my half.

Poured an opaque black body with only a thin glimmer of dark mahogany brown showing at the base of the glass. It started with a finger-thick head of frothy dark tan that dwindled to a creamy surface covering before slowly eroding to an average collar and whispy surface covering. Pretty good retention. And it left some very nice lacing. There were creamy rings visible within solid sheets of thin lace. Nice.

The aroma was very much like fresh, oily coffee beans. I immediately thought of espressos, but they weren't that burnt. No, and I hate to say this, but they were like Dunkin Donuts coffee beans. The smell was a bit acrid, but there was some nuttiness, and what made me think of coconut, but was probably just the oils reminding me of the oils of a coconut. Hints of mocha, some bittersweet chocolate, and even vanilla appeared as well.

So, the aroma appeared a bit acrid, but the flavor was not. Well, not like the aroma. There was some dark malty acidity, and I guess some from the coffee beans as well, but it didn't taste like burnt coffee. Perhaps old coffee...? I thought of oxidation, like wet cardboard, but I'm sure it wasn't from any oxidation of the beer, but rather from the coffee beans themselves. That coffee flavor came on strong at the front, and then faltered because there was a lack of support from the malt beneath it. Either there were too many coffee beans to it, or there was not enough malt. Of course it did have some nice caramel notes to it, and a beautiful nuttiness, and hints of chocolate too, but the coffee seemed to ride above the malt rather than immersing itself in it. It would have been nicer if it was a bit more rounded. The balance of the bitterness was good though. There was just enough against the dark malts and coffee that a little bit of sweetness peeked through, and just enough that it finished dry.

It was a good attempt, but no cigar. And I guess that's why it never went into full production.

Poured a flat black with no head and no lacing. The aroma has the milky lactose note of a sweet stout with a little deep roasted, black barley. The flavor though, that's more meh. It essentially tastes like a milk stout with old, bitter coffee in it. This just isn't a good coffee stout. The coffee reminds me of what you might call 'church basement coffee' - thin and stale.

Poured from a 'Sample B' bottle with a rich moderately dark color and tan head. Fair retention and lacing.

Nice aromas of coffee and a hint of chocolate on the nose, otherwise relatively subdued. Taste is a bit thin but expected given the assumed light ABV of this brew, and the mouthfeel would likely improve with a nitrogen infusion. The beer is fairly drinkable and I didn't find it to be particularly sweet, and certainly not in the 'cover up the alcohol sweetness' I find a bit too prevalent these days.

Bottom line is that this is a decent sessionable crossover stout(4-5% or so I would guess) and surely better than the Sample A.

By the way, Sample A was a Blackberry Witbier, nice on the nose yet overwhelmingly so for such a delicate style. Polar opposites, yet I think that's the point....

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a sample glass. Label is plain and lists Sample B and Coffee Stout. Thanks to DoctorDog for snagging thins from a Sam Adams Rep.

Appearance: Pours with 1/2 inch of dark tan head. Settles slowly to thin coating. Beer itself is nearly opaque, with dark mahogany around the edges.

Smell: Roasted marshmallow and lactose sweetness. Wet cardboard.

Taste: Very roasty taste, well beyond just barley, added to by coffee. Tastes of wet cardboard and old, cheap, cold coffee.

Mouthfeel: Fairly high carbonation level. Body is thin.

Drinkability: Now I know why the bubble-gum flavored Sample A won.

This one was up against the Blackberry Wheat at Table and Vine today. I sampled both of these and, in the end, I picked this one for its well balanced aspects. First I enjoyed the dark brown-black appearance. Just looking at the drink saw how creamy this drink could be. Aromas were not as strong as I thought it could be, but this ended up being a good thing. Not too overpowering at all, but subtle coffee aromas maintained an enticing smell. I felt somewhat disappointed with the taste. Here, I was expecting a full on taste and flavoring of coffee, esperro mixes. However, the flavoring was rather controlled. Like the aromas, the taste was subdued and, although could hurt expectations in a full bodied coffee drink, was generally good and enjoyable. Overall, this remained the best of the 2 I sampled. We will have to see which one reaches the market.

Supposedly one of the beers in the running to become the 2009 winter seasonal. Apparently you can vote for the winner.

Poured a deep black hue with a one finger foamy tan head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a strong coffee aroma from the week long "dry beaning" with Rwandan coffee.

The taste was overlly sweet, with a seemingly artificial acrid coffee flavor. Complete lack of any base malt flavor.

The mouthfeel was entirely too thin and lacked all smoothness.

Overall a poor example of the style.

Tried this about 2 1/2 weeks ago at the taste test held at the Winking Lizard in Lakewood, OH. Served to me in a 4 oz (or so) clear plastic cup. Pours a very dark brown, almost black color with a tan head that settles to a nice ring lining the inside of the glass. Aromas of roasted coffee and malt along with a bit of chocolate. Maybe some hops? The taste is pretty much the same. Roasted malt and coffee flavor along with hints of chocolate and some discernible hops rounding it out. Good stuff indeed and in some ways truly unlike any of SA's other brews. has a slightly crisp, smooth and creamy full bodied mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink. I really did enjoy this one, but ended up voting for the other one in the end.

I first have to preface this with the fact that I am not a coffee drinker and really not a fan of coffee.

I sampled this at the Octoberfest gathering in September.

The appearance is a dark black. Not very foamy with a browish small head.

The smell was quite strong, hints of roasted coffee and toast. Has almost a charcoal flavor to it.

The taste was a lot of the same flavors. Strong coffee flavor, seemed to be a bit off.

Overall I was taken aback by how strong the coffee flavor was. It is a little overpowering and does not leave much in the way of any other flavor. The recipe adjusted slightly might bring about a more rounded taste.

12oz bottle

Pours a very dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Nose of straight coffee, not bad but just a bit much, theres no subtleties going on here, Coffee Stout really means Coffee Stout. Much is the same with the taste, except that some sweet chocolate notes round out the bitter ground coffee bean thing going on. Medium bodied, dull carbonation, I'd drink one and be done with it. IMO, the better of the 2.

Black with a rich creamy tan head. Aromas of leather, coffee, cocoa. Tastes slightly sour at first, but on further contemplation it is more of an acidic quality perhaps attributable to the coffee and roasted malts. Accents of roasted malts and coffee on the middle and finish. Full body. Quite a good effort from America's largest craft brewer - they might play it safe with a lot of their beer styles, but it sure kicks the butt of anything BMC might try to perpetrate.

Boston Beer Company introduces this beer as a clean, dry stout brewed with a bit of smoked malt and dark roasted barley, and then aged for one week on whole coffee beans.

Bought this at Giles in Woburn, must have been left over from a tasting event. Served cool from a 12 oz brown bottle into a pilsner glass.

Pours with a lovely 1-1/2" fluffy, medium-light tan head that leaves lacing all the way down the glass. Crystal clear dark mahogany, nearly black with vivid ruby tone.

Aroma is flat, with a subtle burnt aroma and some coffee overtones. Not huge Charbucks style, though. A little bit grainy as well.

Flavor is green, earthy and mealy with a hint of burnt grains and under-roasted coffee. No conventional dry stout boldness. This is a stale beer, I'm thinking from an unfinished recipe. This could have been better.

Must have come out of retirement....

I got the Sam Adams winter collection at the Costco today.

I have not finished the glass yet, but it seems ok. Coffee taste is very strong. Lots of small bubble carbonation. I was thinking that it would be ok with a little less carbonation given that it is a stout. It may have been a mocha coffee they were trying to achieve; there is definitely a bitter chocolate taste which the back of my tongue enjoys.

Bottom line: too busy in terms of taste and mouthfeel. On my budget, I probably wouldn't get my growler filled with this one. Not great but not bad for the price. Definitely not as good as the Sam Adams chocolate bock I had just before.

Tried a sample to vote for the next brewmaster's collection. Pours a thin and dark brown with a small head.

Aroma of coffee beans and Sam Adam's yeast.

Taste is ok. There's a bit of sweetness and a bunch of coffee beans flavor. More like the taste of raw coffee beans than brewed coffee. Not enough malt taste.

Mouthfeel is way too thin for the style. There's a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Drinkability is pretty good. This isn't as good as most coffee stouts but it's highly drinkable and tastes pretty good.

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz "sample" bottle into a small sample glass.

A- Pours nearly black, with slight highlights. Minimal tan head dissipates to a thin, incomplete cap.

S- Wet cardboard and some slight coffee roastiness.

T- By consensus, this tasted like stale, cold, gas-station coffee tainted by wet cardboard.

M- Highly carbonated and watery.

D- Low.

Future outlook: Well, seeing as how this beer lost to the Blackberry Witbier (Blackberry Wheat), it doesn't have a future....which, based on this sample, is fortunate. I find it hard to believe that Sam Adams put a coffee stout this poor out for consumption in any format, and now understand how the strange tasting witbier won their contest....

I've heard this beer wasn't chosen to be the new addition to Sam Adams lineup, which is disappointing since I think it has some great potential, this batch just isn't there yet.

The carbonation was off, the smell was good but not quite there, and the taste needed a bit more sweet chocolate to balance the bitter coffee.

Until Sam Adams makes this, I'd suggest BBC's Coffeehouse Porter.
