Pours a hazy amber with no head. Smells sweet and malty, with banana and caramel. Tastes of spicy coriander, yeast, banana, white pepper, and cream. Very long finish and slightly sweet. A little too sweet and stodgy in the mouth- particularly for any species of wit. A pleasant enough beer which although spiced like a wit doesn't give me the feeling at all of drinking a wit. The extra malt it took to get the beer up to "Imperial" strength pretty much eliminated the crisp, citrusy pleasures of a wit and created something else entirely- somewhere farther along the spectrum toward a dunkleweiss, at least as far as flavor and mouthfeel goes. Still, not bad- just not wit like in the least- other than the additives.

A: Poured a deep golden almost honey like color. The white head quickly retreated to the rim of my tulip. There is some lacing and good retention of the little bit of head there is.

S: Tons of honey and sweetness with a hint of booze in the back. A touch of coriander and orange peel as well. By far the booziest smelling wit ever.

T: The orange peel is quite up front. Again a ton of sweetness. Maybe they used a little bit of honey to boost the ABV? It is super sweet. Booze runs throughout and it meshes with the sweetness in the finish.

M: For a "wit: this is super thick. Syrupy.

D: At 10.3% I would almost call this more of a wheatwine hybrid. It is boozy. I am enjoying it but the point of a wit is to sit on a hot day and have a few. Maybe they should market this as a winter wit.

A - Light hazelnut colored body... consistently cloudy. Head is slight off-white in color, pours with almost no head but forms shortly therafter. Retention is poor due to ABV.

S - Strong malt with mild undertones of fruity esters. Alcohol isn't too pronounced considering it's 10+ ABV, but definitely noticeable. Very low hop presence

T - Malty sweetness pierces through but resides shortly before a layer of spice notes and alcohol finish through. Bitterness is limited.

M - Creamy mouthful with average carbonation.

Overall - I really enjoyed downing two of these, but felt as though it lacked a little carbonation for both its style and alcohol level. A solid interpretation of an imperial wit.

Kind of a creamy, sweet, wheat beer -- very drinkable. I think it would be better enjoyed on a warm, sunny day rather than a cold, stormy night, which I'm enduring while writing this review. However, to some extent it exudes a spice mix which make it seem like a festive, sort of Christmas beer.
For 10.3% abv it goes down very smooth.

Pours a deep cloudy orange into my southern tier snifter glass. 1.5 finger head with good retention and decent lacing. Smells like a belgian, sweet, spicy, with high alcohol nose. Taste is sweet and spicy with slight orange booze flavor. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy. Seems to thicken as it warms. Very nice. Overall this beer is pleasant and enjoyable. In moderation of course.

Poured into my new glassware from BA. Pours a cloudy light amber color with a nice white heading very small bubbles.

Smell is of corriander, banana, and lime. This one isn't light on the alcohol. Also after a bit a nice citrus hoppey smell.

Taste is very heavy with booze up front the nose is feint from the taste all I can taste is the alcohol.

Mouthful again very heavy but a nice light malty taste with an orange aftertaste.

This beer would be alot better if they toned down the alcohol and corriander. It might get better with age same as the double bock.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a fairly deep and hazy amber orange with lots of rising bubbles. Big four finger off white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of lace around the glass.

Smell: A pretty sweet smelling blend of wheat, malts, and spices. Lots of wheat and pale malts with hints of bready biscuit. Big hints of coriander and some pepper spices. Big citrus presence with good hints of orange peel, lemon zest, apricot, peach, and a little banana. Also a little whiff of booze. Hops are pretty muted.

Taste: Like the nose indicates, a pretty sweet and malty Witbier with a boozy kick. Wheat with lots of coriander and some pepper spice. Big taste of pale malts with a lot of bread. Some banana and a big citrus presence. Notes of orange peel, lemon zest, and a little peach and apricot. Light hint of noble hops towards the finish. Some booze in the taste.

Mouthfeel: Fairly heavy bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, syrupy, and somewhat sticky. Feels a little hot.

Overall: An interesting take on a Witbier. A decent taste, but a little too syrupy and sweet.

shared this with tenderbranson69, poured chilled into a sampler
A - A pale/light copper w/ thin white cap, bubbles slowly rise. Gentle haze, thick white coats the glass

S - Like bread, honey and melons w/ celery odor and high alcohol presence in the nose

M - Strong heat, sweet texture -almost viscous w/ mild spice and high carbonation for the strength

T - A bit like cough syrup in strength at first w/ alcohol flavor followed by wheat and mild fruity/tropical flavor which improves as it warms w/ more malty flavor and mild spice

D - A strong tasting beer and bold - I would recommend sampling with food. It seems a bit intense for my taste @ 10.3% to really be considered drinkable. I like it but this doesn't hide the alcohol well. Not an every day beer, perhaps shared or as a nightcap best suits this.

A: Spectacularly cloudy orangey brown. Relatively tall white head with some lacing.

S: Wheat malt, barley and light fruits dominate the nose. Floral and fragrant spices with a bite of hops are also present. ABV is noticeable in the nose as well.

T: What? A combination between dried candied fruit and super sweet wheat malt smack you right in the face on the initial sip. Orange, banana, honey and black pepper are consistent throughout the flavor. Both the hops and the ABV are less apparent in the taste than the nose. Aftertaste is somewhat odd; kind of tastes like a banana.

M: Milky and sticky. Extra fruity throughout. Medium body with medium carbonation.

D: Definitely an easy drinker for the high ABV. Well done, Samuel Adams.

I'm a big fan of Witbiers, but I was greatly disappointed in this beer. The amounts of hops in this overpowered everything about this beer. I could not taste any orange, coriander or any of the others spices associated with witbiers. I would not reccomend this beer.

A- Golden to amber color, slighly hazy, a bit darker than I would expect from a standard wit but still attractive

S- Orange, coriander, and maybe bananas, smell is somewhere between a standard wit and a wheat dopplebock

Taste- hops and citrus right away, then more subdued citrus, spices, and other fruits as well. It starts strong but finishes smooth without being weak by any means.

Mouthfeel- filling without being syrupy, bubbly without feeling too light, very smooth and clean

D- I could have another one right away, but at 10.3 abv...maybe I shouldn't

Overall, I have been very impressed with the new things Sam Adams is trying. My beer snobbery is being turned on its head as American brews are catching up to the European masters.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a weizen.

A: Looks like a wit. Just a little dark and the head seems to fade pretty fast.

S: You can smell the wheat tang and spice, but there is just tons of liquor in the nose.

T: Same with the taste. This is just too hot and unbalanced. Other flavours make an appearance, but this is a booze bomb.

D: Brought down by the massive alcohol presence. One is plenty for me.

Overall: Not for the weak of heart. This is very boozy. I'm going to put a bottle away for a year or two and then revisit it. I have a feeling age with help this one remarkable.
