Notes: For the first time in 31 years, we’re updating the classic Winter Lager recipe to make it crisper and brighter. It’s the same iconic beer, with a wintery remix. Crisp Bock with citrus and spices, lager brewed with orange peel, cinnamon, and ginger.

It would be a lot better sans spices.
Pours a beautiful color.
Can't they just brew a good regular Bock/Dopplebock?
I know they made a half decent DB years ago with their overpriced Brewers Reserve or whatever they called their "upscale" selections at the time.
I'll drink it if the rest of the tap selections are shite.

Pours a clear, amber color with a decent head leaving a little ring about the glass. Certainly looks nice. Smell is malty, a little hint of citrus, not much else. Taste is decent malty flavor with a bit of citrus and spice. Primarily malt, the citrus and spice are there to round the malty flavor but not very forward and are mostly present towards the finish. Feel is a little thinner than I expected, lightly carbonated.

Overall, not a bad beer but not exactly what I was expecting from a holiday beer. That said, it does help breakup all of the heavier stouts at this time of the year and wouldn't be a bad thing to have for gatherings.

Poured in a pint glass. Nice white head. Sticks around a bit.
Smell is honey and malts.
Flavor is honey and a touch of roast I the front. Slight bitter in back and very dry.
Dryness makes you drink more.
Tastes like a Bock beer…because it is.
Wouldn’t reach for it a lot. But it’s ok.

I've had both the new version of the Winter Lager with the gold label and the old version with the green label. I'll just consider the gold label for this review/rating. It pours clear red amber with a lasting white head. I get some bread and a bit of orange on the nose. Nothing too enticing. The taste is also mild: bread (not dark or rich) and caramel malt. The only orange and ginger I get is on the burp. The hops come through more than I was expecting, especially in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is smooth with a slightly dry finish.

It's fine, but Sam Adams has better winter offerings.

Reminds me of a winter warmer. Definitely a cross between a Bock and a warmer. Really refreshing without being too heavy. Good seasonal beer.

Tonight is a new to me beer

Sam Adams – Winter Lager

5.6% ABV

The beer is listed as a “winter lager” on the bottle, and “Bock – traditional” on BA.

The beer was removed from a 45ish degree temp fridge after having been refrigerated for approximately 1 month. Beer poured into nonic pint.

First Impression: Perhaps thin, and opaque. 3.75

Appearance: Light brown/amber; light for a bock. Nice head at start, but recedes quickly. 3.5

Smell: Not a lot of anything, but I am getting some cola with a twist of lemon. 3.5

Taste: Thankfully taste does not follow the nose. Taste is full of typical bock flavors, just a ‘light’ version, so to speak. Lots of roasted malt, chocolatey and (weak) caramel flavors. Not very bready. Not very malty, surprisingly. 3.75

Mouthfeel: Thin; thinner than an Oktoberfest, but not watery-thin. 3.5

Overall: This isn’t an unenjoyable beer. If I was given this, I’d gladly drink it and have another. It’s enjoyable. Is it a good beer? Don’t know I’d go that far. Would I buy a 6 pack? Not a chance. Would I buy 1-3 in a 4 month time span? Maybe. 1 for sure. 2-3? Maybe. 3.75

L: a very nice clear old copper with a quickly dissolving light tan head
S: sweet malts, burnt sugar, a little orange
T: follows the smell with rich sweet malts, caramel, and dried orange peel. No noticable cinnamon, but there is a ginger like heat at the end
F: smooth and rich. Full bodied with very little carbonation. Sightly sticky on the tongue with pleasantly bitter sweet aftertaste that reminds me of caramel with a dash of orange pith & a hint of ginger
O: not too bad, this is a pretty good base Bock beer, unfortunately the holiday seasonings didn't quite work. The dried/candied orange peel is present, but the ginger is confined to just a hint at the back of the swallow and in the aftertaste, you might not notice that it's there if the bottle didn't tell you, and the cinnamon never appears at all, even after the beer reaches room temperature.
A good effort and a pretty good beer, but just disappointing.

L: dark burnt amber, short lasting off white head, no lacing.

S: slight clove, sassafras, and a bit watery.

T: clove, sassafras, lightly toasted malts. Also a bit watery.

F: medium heavy body that finishes light and refreshing, good throat hit, but doesn’t linger on the palate.

O: very good for a domestic beer, I would put this a touch under yuengling but it definitely delivers for what it is. Like someone else said that it’s more of a social beer than an unwind beer. Not opposed to trying again but I won’t be in a hurry either.

Purchased as a single bottle from Ingles for $1.50. Poured into a tulip glass.

L - Amber with a two-finger sticky white head.
S - Honey, dark breads, and maybe a bit of plum skin. An almost nutty aroma, as well - like walnut.
T - Sweet dark breads, and a touch of molasses. Not exactly much going on here. Fairly balanced, but could use some more bitterness.
F - Medium body, very light carbonation. Feels oily. Pretty easy-to-drink.
O - It's definitely a bock, but a one-dimensional one at that! Not as complex as I would've liked, nor expected. The label claimed there were notes of cinnamon, ginger, and orange peel; sounds a lot more interesting than what they delivered! Not really disappointing, moreso expected. I probably wouldn't turn one down, but there are better bocks around this price range I'd go for.

On draught at Old Chicago.

Pours a clear amber with a good head of foam, good lacing.

Smell is light caramel, light spice, some bread.

The taste is very crisp. Caramel, some bread and light spices, low level of bitterness. Very easy drinking and it has a good mouthfeel.

I'll drink this again.

Appearance: Brilliantly clear dark amber. Fluffy off-white head with good retention.

Aroma: Toasted malt, caramel & spicy.

Flavor & aftertaste: Toasted malt, caramel & spices. Restrained bitterness. Semi-dry. Medium carbonation.

Mouth-feel: Full bodied, smooth. Moderate length finish.

Overall: I know some will disagree simply because this beer is from one of the large "craft" beer breweries, but I think this is outstanding. Unlike many ale winter beers, the fruity esters don't interfere with the malt flavors & spices. Clean lager profile. Nice smooth mouth-feel. Medium length finish with bitterness and spiciness lingering. I always look forward to this winter beer and I was concerned when Samuel Adams changed it a bit, but it's still delightful.

Deep copper color with off-white foam. At first this tasted like a plain ol' lager, but as it warmed the malty sweetness came through. A bit mild tasting for a bock and nothing in the flavor that stands out as "holiday", but an enjoyable beer all the same.
