The cork came out with a loud pop and plenty of smoke emerged from the bottle. Poured into a large brandy snifter. Pours deep reddish brown with a small, somewhat quickly dissipating light tan head. There's a little bit of lacing left behind and some visible alcohol legs. I can see through the beer if I look through it from the top as opposed to the side of the glass. The beer smells like a good Flemish red. It has that tart cherry scent. I get some of that bready and sweet malt along with the oak. I can pick up some of that alcohol as well, but it's very faint. The taste follows the nose. The cherry tartness is up front, but it's balanced by the bready and mildly sweet malt with some of that oak flavor. There's some spice in there as well. The alcohol isn't that detectable in the taste. It's incredibly well-balanced. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. The finish is a little dry. The drinkability is high. This is an excellent beer that I would recommend to fans of this style.

Interesting bottle design certainly draws one's eye. It pours out a deep mahogany color with a dense quarter-inch head atop it. The nose offers all the normal notes of a Flemish red: vinous fruitiness, sweet malt, a little oaky vanilla as well. As for flavor: Sam Adams really got this spot on! No one thing dominates. Instead, there's a wonderful blend of oakiness, tart cherries without cherry sweetness, and malt, lightly caramel. Acidity is present but this beer is at the less sour end of the Flemsh red spectrum. There are lots of food pairing possibilities here that would be interesting.

Every time Sam Adams comes up with a new line of beers, I've come to expect no more one well-done in the bunch. This one certainly hits that! Looking forward to the others, though.

A- pours a clear garnet color with a khaki head and cherry collar,a little lacing on glass
S- is dark fruits and lighter fruits with sour vinegar notes fruits of cranberry apple cherry and pomegranate with subtle oak and wood smells
T-ripe and sour cherries with tart fruit hints of spices and smoked oak very very good
M-its dry and tart with a creamy fruity texture sour and slight funk wood notes
O -surprised and impressed with this one it was quite tart and sour with nice wood notes a nice Belgian Red imo

Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red starts out as a strong red ale fermented with a Belgian style ale yeast. This younger ale is blended with over 50% of our Samuel Adams Kosmic Mother Funk®. The Kosmic Mother Funk is a Belgian ale that we age in oak casks and tanks for over 6 months. The beer in the oak vessels undergoes a secondary fermentation with brettanomyces yeasts and lactobacillus to give the beer a rich tropical fruit note and some sourness. Stony Brook Red's resulting blend has an earthy, fruity, and estery character. The beer is also bottle conditioned."

Brewed with Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend, Munich, Special B, and aromatic malt. Hopped with Hallertau Mittelfrueh. Fermented with a Belgian yeast strain, then blended with "Kosmic Mother Funk" (fermented with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus). Bottle conditioned with champagne yeast.

35 SRM, OG=22.5° Plato, 9%ABV, 251 Calories/12 oz, 10 IBU.

Pours out to a clear very deep brown with burgundy highlights, forming a nice soft and creamy light tan-yellow head that grows owing to the brisk carbonation, with excellent retention and beautiful lacing. Carbonation is brisk, ~3.5 carbs or so. The aroma is absolutely delicious and enticing...notes of sour candy, rotting cherries, dusky basement, Belgian funk, balsamic vinegar. Mouthfeel is tart and complex with a medium body and powdery effervescence. The taste opens with tart cherries, sour candy and vinegar, followed by a touch of figs, then a strong leather note in the middle, a very mild earthy bitterness, and more funky earthiness in the finish. Aftertaste is winey with blackberries. The tartness is not over the top and stays balanced with the malts. Lots of melanoidin in the finish, like melanoidin malt...probably the result of a very long boil. Definitely true to style of a Flanders Red/Oud Bruin.

What an exceptional beer. Without a doubt, the best I've had this year. I honestly could do without the Special B and aromatic malt, and this would have been even better with some more residual sweetness. A well-balanced sweet/sour beer, re: Duchesse, is to die for, but as is, this is heavenly stuff. As it warms up and the carbonation simmers, it takes on a more enveloping mouthfeel and the malts come out a bit more. A beautiful, beautiful beer. Will definitely have to buy another couple bottles of this.

This was my first American wild ale, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. It was a great beer, though. Hard to drink in the quantity it comes in (750 mL bottle), but good. It has a tart fruity smell with some whiskey smell mixed in.
The taste is also very tart and VERY fruity, but it has a finish that just chalk full of fungus. Excessive in my opinion, but it's fun because I was expecting something crazy like that from this beer. I wanted something a little out of the ordinary. That whiskey barrel flavour is there too. The mouthfeel is surprisingly thin, though, and with surprisingly high carbonation. For a tart beer it makes sense, but for a malty beer it doesn't. Since this one is both, I'm inclined to just go with it even though it wouldn't be my preference if I were to concoct a funky tart red ale.
Anyway, I will probably not buy this again because of the very high cost. It was good, a very interesting foray into barrel aging. The closest barrel-aged beer I've had to this was Petrus and that was quite different. However, it's not quite up my alley enough to warrant the very high cost of this beer.

Pours deep brown with a tinge of red and a foamy off-white head that settles to about a half finger. Nose is tart cherries, some brandy like qualities, white grapes (surprisingly), slight vanilla and oak, plums, green apples and just a bit of caramel. The taste is less tart than the smell. Grapes, cherries, oak, brandy, pears and it finishes on notes of red wine. Sam Adams attempt at a sour is a definite win. I haven't had many really good sours in AZ but this is finally one and at $9 its not a bad deal. I just hope Plaza Liquors gets some more.

Pours dark mahogany red with off-white head.

Smell is sour with hints of tart fruit and hints of worcheshire sauce.

Taste follows smell well but with a little less tart character. Not as sour as I expected and makes appearance more toward the finish. Good fruit flavors and hints of worcheshire sauce. Very complex.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied. Prickly carbonation.

Overall this was good. Not as tart as I would like to see.

Pours a deep blood red. Can't really see anything through it but not completely opaque. There was a 3 finger of fizzy sounding head, dissipating fairly quickly to a slight foamy cap. The aroma had a medium sour/acidic smell, with some toffee notes, slight fruit notes, tinges of oak and a bit of funk. The taste had much for fruitiness to it than the aroma. It's slightly sweet and only has a touch of tartness on the back end. There's a touch of vanilla and a woody quality, though mild by comparison to the nose. It had medium carbonation, medium body, and a fairly smooth texture. Not really noticeable alcohol for 9%, making for some pretty good drink-ability.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pleasantly surprised by this one. BBC doesn't wow most of the time, but this is a very pleasant, very well made, enjoyable wild ale and well worth the $7.99 price tag.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance- Pours a deep red color with a two finger off white head. The head fades rather quickly and leaves a light amount of lacing.

Smell – The smell is of fruit with strong sour and vinegar notes. The fruit is of dark fruits with cherry being the strongest. The sour is of a fruity nature of (more) cherry, cranberry and some sour apple. These fruit aromas a mixed with a vinegary smell giving it an even more sour and slightly bitter aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with notes of a drier cherry with a moderate dose of sour fruit flavors. As the taste advances it sweetens some toward the middle. With the sweeter flavors are some notes of cinnamon and oak. While it sweetens in the middle more toward the end an apple and cherry fruity sour and vinegary flavor come to the taste. These dry out some of the sweetness and leave a more sour fruit flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the drier and is average in terms of creaminess. The carbonation of the beer is on the medium side, which with the body, compliment the more sour flavors of the brew.

Overall – A fairly nice sour. Not mouth puckering like some, but it had a nice balance between sour and sweet/malty. While the Belgian sour is not really my style, I believe Sam does a nice job with this one. Give it a go.

The last of the Trio in my Sam Adams adventure...

Appearance - A nice dark brown with reddish tones. Not much head though but when it was forming it was yellow/brown tinge.

Smell - Tart cherries, brown ale, and a few scents of herbs like rosemary

Taste - Very similar to a lambric, but definitely more of an ale with good pretense of cherries. I really enjoyed the taste on this one, but make sure your expecting it on first sip.

Mouthfeel - A little disappointed here, but still higher caliber. Not much carbonation and I feel it really could have benefited from some more.

Overall - Between the three, I can't decide what one I enjoy most. This definitely will be bought over a more expensive lambric when it's not payday

750 ml bottle was poured into a large Duvel glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that has reduced to a thin layer. It is an amber red color with little clarity and bubbles coming up the edges of the glass.

Smell: Oak, tart fruits, sourness, and bready notes. The beer almost smells like a Flemish red. Very interesting.

Taste: Very tasty and delicious. The tart aspects of the beer blend well with the smooth parts of oak.

Mouthfeel: very dry and almost champagne like the bottle states, medium to full bodied, a little chewy, and medium to high carbonation. The beer smooths out after a while too.

Overall: Is this a wild ale or a Flemish red? Anyways, it tasted very good. Reasonably priced too @ $10 a bottle. Delicious and enjoyable.

Pours brownish-red. A tad of cherry medicine aroma. Medium bodied. Decent drinkability. It seems to be an understated balanced out Flander's Red. Very woody in the finish. Not complex and not exceptionally interesting. Bottle found in a Maine bottle shop.

A - dark amber with a huge off white head that has fantastic retention

S - tart cherries, funky yeast

T - tasrt, a little sour, cherries, oak, woody

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

This was awesome. It had a fantastic nose and flavor. It was fruit-forward and tart. It's simple but it has depth. I thoroughly enjoyed this. If I can find it again, I'll pick it up.

L- Dark reddish brown topped with a thin off white head. Head fades quickly and leaves no noticeable lace on the glass.

S- Subtle notes of candied fruit, cherries, with underlying notes of sour funk. Classic notes of a Flanders red ale in my opinion. Slight note of oak at the very end of the nose.

T- Sweet fruit at first that is soon displaced with a tart sour note of wild funk. Not overbearing and nicely balanced, very approachable for a sour style. Slight hints of wood throughout the flavor profile and a dry finish with a lingering tart final note.

M- Medium in body and carbonation, feels clean and not overly dry on the palate.

O- Great beer and an easily accessible take on the style. If you have never tried a sour this would be a good one to start with. The 9.0% ABV is a little on the high side so keep that in mind if you decide you like it and want to finish the whole bottle by yourself.
