Presentation: Label is very attractive and eye-catching with a metallic foil look and awesome graphics. Front label gives a small description of beer, ABV info, Enjoy Before Date(4/2014), a bit of brewery info, and states “Special Release”. Neck label has a nice small description and back story on the beer. Sam Adams is embossed in the glass bottle.

Appearance: I decanted this Cherry Chocolate Bock aggressively from its 12oz brown bottle into a 13oz pokal glass which led to a thick 3 finger mocha head atop a deep opaque brown beer that has slight ruby tones when held up to the light. Head retention was a excellent 4min 37sec before fading to a thick coating and ring with excellent lacing.

Smell/Aroma: CCB smells heavy of sweet maraschino cherries with hints of coco and a slight nuttiness. Has a slight soda aroma.

Flavor/Taste: CCB tastes heavy on sweet chocolate malts with a slight nuttiness on the front-end. A sweet maraschino cherry flavor along with more chocolate comes through on midpoint. Back-end is dominated by sweet chocolate with some light cherry sweetness and a toasty nutty flavor. Finish is very soda like with a sweet chocolate and cherry flavor. Very sweet.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: On the full side of medium bodied with a smooth creamy mouthfeel. CCB is only just slightly drinkable because of the overly sweet flavor.

Overall/Comments: CCB is a solid offering that I would classify as a dessert beer because of the extremely sweet nature of this beer. In my opinion if this beer have had more of a sour cherry flavor it would have been a very good offering however it is overly sweet for me as is. Consumed 12/17/2013. Classified as a Bock @ 5.8% ABV.

A: Dark burgundy pour with a 2 inch walnut crown has a texture that was frothy with a retention rate that was short and only moderate. Lacing was weak on the glass.

S: Aroma was sweet cherry juice, sweet dark fruit of plums with some cherry skins. The chocolate and cocoa nibs seem to be severely lacking it at all detected here, a feature i thought was much more promising on the chocolate bock original. The scent brought back some unkind memories of their cherry wheat.

T: Rich chocolate and cocoa powder comes though on the flavor, the cherry influence takes a welcome back seat opposed to its dominance on the nose. Warming cherry skins and cherry juices come through a bit more with some dark sweet plums and sugary peaches with some cherry juices and a soft tart fade mixed with some bitter cocoa nibs on the finish.

M: Creamy mouthful that was lightly milky textured, softly carbonated with a light cherry tartness.

O: Overall thought the original chocolate bock was fairly decent with a rich chocolate base, this seemed like a decent beer combined with the cherry wheat to come up with a compromise of the two in terms of drinkability and enjoyment. Think this is at best a C+ beer, decent but wouldnt go as far to claim its good other then a supplement to a variety package for a first try.

A: Looks like black coffee, small head with little to no lacing down the glass.

S: Smells very good, like chocolate covered cherries or Cherry Garcia Ice cream from Ben and Jerry's.

T: Not your typical Bock. The cherry taste is very present with some slight mocha coming through. The more I tasted it, the more it tasted like Cherry Coke.

O: Overall, an okay beer, definitely not my favorite from the Winter Sampler.

On tap at Thirsty Monk South in an 8oz. goblet.
The powerful blast of cherry and almond aroma is all I get out of this beer. Can someone say Maraschino?
The beer, sadly, does not live up to the overwhelming cherry aroma. In fact, all I taste is cherry with just a lingering of chocolate on the back of the tongue. What happened to the beer?

P: Tap pour in to a pint glass

A: SRM is chocolate brown with a tinge of red. Clear filtered and translucent. Head is off white, 1 in, dissipates to line the rim of the glass. Heavy carbonation. Light/medium lacing.

S: At proper serving temp, chocolate malt and cherry notes are light but definitely noticable.

T: Tastes like a cherry cordial. Chocolate flavor is reminiscent of classic American chocolate, cherry flavor is pronounced but balances perfectly with the chocolate. Malt and carbonation cause a creamy taste/sensation.

M: Light body. Balance of ingredients and carbonation give the sensation of eating a cherry cordial.

O: Great beer; possibly one of the best beers I have ever had from SA; definitely in the top 3. Perfectly executed balance of flavors. High carbonation gives a creamy sensation, along with the malt content. This is really like drinking an alcoholic cherry cordial.

Had this poured out of the bottle into a porter glass. A bit sweet, but one of the better offerings I've had from Sam in a long time. Deep chocolate brown color and heavy body with a very smooth mouthfeel. Sweet cocoa and cherry aroma, with a flavor to match. Try it with desserts.
