Poured a clear and deep amber color. Almost looked like dark iced tea. A thin foamy head of tan foam topped the brew off. The aroma yields deep and rich molasses like notes with a sweet nut-like quality. This could be an example of a “chewy” beer. And I’m not talking about a good Wookie brew, more like flavorful and buttery. Like liquid dark bread. Very nice. The taste is full of fine weighty malts. The sweetness hits the mark for me – Not being a sweet beer guy, this seems just perfect. Caramel comes through, along with woody and earthy notes. Accent is surely on the malt, but that’s to be expected for the style. A nutty bitterness appears in the finish. Full flavored and overall, an excellent beer.

Great beer. It goes down real easy. It has a nice dark color and is very smooth. I have had this on a number of occasions and it is fantastic. I know that the comparison I am about to make maybe off base but, this beer is on comparison to Smithwick's Ale. Another great beer! Smooth and gets you where you want to go. Goes nicely between Octoberfest(another great beer) and Sam lite(not so great). Highly suggest all to try this beer. You won't be dissappointed.

alright sammy. this one is a winner. it pours to a nice dark amber with some foam on the top. the smell is sweet and malty and you wanna just jump right in.

it is incredibly rich and smooth. if you like munich lagers, you will probably enjoy this. it is darker and more rich than a munich, but there are many similarities. nice sweet maltiness with a nice balance of hops following behind. tasty to the last drop. this beer alone makes the winter sampler worth while

Vienna Style Lager from Sam Adams: Great looking beer: deep amber, with an off-white head that is thick, dense and long lasting, with nice lace. The aroma is simply Munich during O-Fest. Very tasty beer, clearly dominated but what is obviously Vienna malts, with substantially less hops than one usually finds with Sammy products. Has a very nice finish. Hope to see this in sixes soon.

From Sam Adams Winter Classics 12-pack;

Rich deep copper color, big foamy head, and lace all the way to the bottom. Sweet toasted malt nose with plenty of hops and fruitiness. Rich, creamy, smooth, clean flavor with a huge amount of sweet toasted malt. Balance perfectly with noble hops, big on flavor and just the right amount of bitterness. Finishes with a lot of malt and hops flavor.

This is an outstanding lager. This is definitely a winner from Sammy. I will keep my eyes open for this one if it ever comes out in a 6 pack.

A very interesting beer. It is in some ways reminiscent of a dopplebock. The aroma and flavor are of a buttery malt. There is a bit of a bready aftertaste along with the huge malt profile that dominates just about every aspect of this beer. This could make a good session beer.

Pours a bright orange-red color with a tan head. Head could last longer, but there is very nice lacing. Toasty aroma with hops in the backround. Medium bodied with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Starts with a carmel-malt flavor with toasty notes. Hops are present but more for flavor and balance, as bitterness is low. Finishes with an herbal hop taste, and leaves a creamy coat across the tounge. Before I knew it, my mug was empty.

Note to Boston Beer:
Please add this to your year-round lineup!

pours out a clear, dark orange-amber color. a nice foamy head leaves a good deal of lace. aromas of toasted and caramel malts. very malty profile...the vienna malts really come through on brew. it never gets too sweet, adding to the already smooth and creamy mouthfeel. soft noble hops float around, balancing things nicely and adding a soft hop bite in the end. wow is this an excellent vienna. too bad it only comes in the holiday pack. it would be able to stand up on it's own in the SA lineup, no problem!

This beer was a nice clear shade of reddish brown with a nice off white head that settles quickly to a ring that leaves just a little sticky lace.
Good aroma, quite sweet with lots of toasted malt and some caramel/toffee smells, just a bit of flowery hop aroma peeking around the edges. Rather fragrant even when quite cold, the aroma builds and gains a bit of fruitiness as it warms a bit in the glass.
Nice upfront malty-sweet flavor gives a creamy feel on the tongue, hints of toasted malt, almost breadlike flavors balanced nicely by some not quite floral hop flavor, I see others describe it as herbal so I guess herbal it is.
Very creamy clean mouthfeel with a crisp finish hops that doesn't linger very long but leaves you ready for the next sip.
My first time drinking this beer, I found it very nice and drinkable, why don't they make it more available, I would definitely buy more, but right now it's only in the Winter mix 12 packs.

An amber colored beer with a big off white head that stays at a good level, leaving a lot of lace. Grainy sweet malt aroma with a little hop kick. Wheat-like and grainy malt plays to hops just perfectly in the flavor, very well balanced. The Vienna malt used is very complex and interesting. Extremely clean and crisp from start to finish, as it should be. I'd describe the aftertaste as "fresh grain". Another great lager from Boston Beer Co. They make some of the tastiest lagers out there, I'm glad to see them tackle another style, and a rare one at that. I'm looking forward to this being available in six packs next year. Until then I'll enjoy it along with the other great beers in the Winter Classics pack!

Pours an amber color very similiar to winter lager, and tastes alot like it without the spices, a very tasty malty beer with a little bit of hops. A nice beer, I hope it becomes a regular.

An interesting cordovan polish with ruby hues color. The off-white head fades to a thin layer and leaves a sliding lace. An almost creamy, caramel sweet malt body make for a gulpable beer. Sweet malt and light fruit, plus hop aroma. Lime-like hop bitterness and a hint of alcohol. Could provide a welcome balance to spicy BBQs.

Sammy better put this one in the stable permanantly. An excellent drinking beer. Pours out to a bright amber in the glass with a fruit-like aroma. Taste is predominantly that of malt, but in a very good way. Rich and flavorful, with a finish that really brings out the malt. A very, very good beer.

I haven't been recently impressed with Boston Beer's latest brews, but this one is particularly good. I'm glad they put it in six packs.
Pours a brownish-red color with an off-white head. The head could be a bit more solid, but it's still an attractive beer. Aroma is distinctively Vienna malt. Taste isn't as sweet as I expected, but it's resolutely malty. Toasted, almost bread-like character. Firm, impressive body with a nice finish. Hops take a decidedly back-seat in this beer. This could become one of my favorites from Sam Adams.

Beer is a nice amber color. Pours with a decent head that lingers longer than most. Beer has a nice malty smell with hints of sweetness.

The taste is quite good with a nice balance of malt, caramel, and a bit of spice. Beer finishes clean with no aftertaste except a faint bitter taste in the back of the mouth.

Nothing really stands out too much and nothing is too overpowering. A good beer that is enjoyable and very drinkable. Unfortunately I have only seen it in the winter 12-pack sampler.

This beer had a large sized ivory head that contained fine-small bubbles. The body was cloudy and carbonation was observed. The hue was copper and the nose was malty. The flavor was malty and the mouthfeel was very smooth, delicate, easy on the palate, somewhat thin, and light bodied. This beer left a good lacing appearance. This was a beer that was very enjoyable to not only drink, but to rate as well.

This dark copper colored beer has a thin head that quickly disapperars. A fruity aroma hovers over the beer and has a smell that reminds me of a red wine. Medium bodied and malty flavor that goes down smooth. A slight bitter finish.

I've never had this beer before and was expecting a light lager. I was surprised at the dark color and malty flavor. This is a good beer that would go well with steak or pizza.

Appearance: This brew was a nice copper color that poured with a big, tan head. A thin layer persisted the entire drink and left a little lace on the glass.

Smell: The overriding aroma of this beer was a malty sweetness. To a lesser extent, there was a spicy aroma that reminded me of licorice and coriander. This was very faint, though. Also, there was a bit of hops on the nose.

Mouthfeel: Very impressive. A rich, smooth, full-bodied beer.

Taste: This was a sweet brew, though the sweetness was subtle and malty, not artificial tasting. The roasted malt flavor really filled the mouth. The finish was prickly on the tongue and cheeks. Any hops presence was more noticeable in the mild spiciness of this beer rather than by any bitter flavors.

I really enjoyed this beer.

A pretty malty lager that reminds me of Victory's All Malt Lager in some regards. This has a few more flavors to it though. Clean tasting with a mellow and predominately malty sweetness. Gets better as it warms; flavors come out more. Color and relative appearance very similiar to their Boston Lager. Carbonation of tiny rising bubbles combined with the smoothness and mellowness of the malts creates a brew with great drinkability. I only hope in the future I'll be able to drink this more often (Mr. Koch if you read this, consider making this a regular addition).

As you open thisone the malty aroma is noticed first. It pours a nice deep amber color with a full fluffy off-white pillow.Lace is good and plenty. The taste is more of toasted malt with a smooth as cream mouthfeel. A great lunchtime, sandwitch brew. I too hope they put this in sixers sometime soon.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle with a purchase before freshness date on the side of the label.

Appearance: Bubbly off white lace has some stickage, brilliant tawny brassy hue.

Smell: Faint floral and herbal hop aroma with a softly textured toasted malt in the back that pulls a sweetness to the front.

Taste: Clean with a lively crispness and smooth mouth feel in the back. Fresh yet light noble hoppy flavour, bitterness is sufficient and does not get out of control … it seems to offer more flavour than bitterness. A dollop of malt sweetness upfront, maltiness is rounded with a thick toasted flavour. Finishes somewhat clean with a lingering herbal hop and lightly toasted grain in the end.

Notes: I’m very fond of this style, hard to find good ones … hell it’s hard to find them at all. If they put this one in six packs and cases I’ll gladly buy it again. Great to pair this one up with some mild cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese on pretty much any kind of sandwich … cut to the chase, it’s a great lunch time brew.

Coppery-reddish brew with a small white, sticky head. Smell is malty with herbal hops. A little fruit in the background. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Big malty flavor right up front - somewhat sweet. Very light hops - makes it somewhat tea-like. Aftertaste is bready, but clean. Overall a good brew. I'd argue that this is one of the most interesting beers from Sam Adams, and one of their best.

A few more comments - 12AUG03. Poured 3x bottles into an Oktoberfest litre Stein. Great color, as before! Head was big and frothy, a tad off-white. Real nice lacing! Caramel malt along with a sharp, saaz-like spiciness. Good mouthfeel, and more spiciness in the flavor. Works well in a litre portion!! Zum Wohl!!

*** ***

I love the color! A super reddish-copper hue, with a thin, fine off-white head, though not much lacing. I thought it had a fabulous caramel-malt nose; quite appealing! Body was better than average, and it was fairly smooth, tongue-wise. The caramel aspect of the aroma comes through nicely in the flavor, also! The sweetness of the malt is balanced nicely by the hops at the finish. Very pleasant, all around. This would work quite well for me as a regular, year-round offering! Prosit!!

Pours a reddish amber color with a creamy off-white colored head. Sweet malts and grains dominate the aroma with notes of dried fruit and a small amount of lemon peel. It’s smooth and creamy in the mouth with flavors of roasted malts and a light hop bitterness. This is a very enjoyable lager.
