Pours black with a very small tan head. Aroma of coffee, toffee, and nothing else that i could tell. Low carbonation. Very smooth, with a roasty coffee flavor that finish a tad sour.
I could not pick up any roasted malt, patent, chocolate malt, or anything..just coffee coffee coffee

12oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

(A)- Pours a pitch black color. Some tan froth.

(S)- Mild roasted and raisin bits. Small hints of cocoa.

(T)- Nice parts of mild roasted grains, coffee ground, raisin and cocoa.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Smooth and rich but balanced and subdued.

(D)- A nice little brew for a brisk night outside. Solid for the style.

A new winter season offering in the Samuel Adams Winter Varietal 12 pack. There were two of these and I'm hanging on to one to see how it does with time. I love coffee stouts, so I'm itching to try this one!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to the Samuel Adams pint glass. Served at 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a bold tan and light bold head, about a finger deep that retains above average, settling down to a thick and frothy surface cover. Sticky medium lacing clings to the side of the glass. Color is a near black with some slight traces of brown light shining through in small traces. Appearance is really good for this beer. 4.5

(Smell) Roasted coffee grounds and a hint of sweet caramel and lactose over a slightly bitter bean aroma. Coffee essence is the most potent aspect of the brew. Chocolate is far more subtle. Complexity is limited, but what's here is potent and pleasant. Slightly sweet aromas. Enjoyable aroma overall. 4

(Taste) Mild bitter espresso bite gives way to a sweeter candy coffee body than I had expected. Bold mocha chocolate notes come through most in the finish. The occasional alcohol peeks in from time to time but is barely discernible. The taste misses some complexity before the finish, and a bitter coffee ground essence is striking on the tongue. This is essentially another run-of-the-mill Coffee Stout without any striking features to stand apart from the crowd, going for coffee features exclusively, but it has its enjoyable moments. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Largely creamy, but with a little more carbonation than needed, a bit fizzy on the mouth. Alcohol presence is a light, body is medium/heavy. Not a bad pairing, just a bit too excited to pair well with the taste. 3

(Overall) Don't get me wrong, this is a good coffee stout and an enjoyable one at that, but there are already so many good enjoyable coffee stouts out there that this one doesn't stand apart from the rest, with no real differences. While I wouldn't mind trying it again, I would only in the right time when in the right mood. I do recommend it, however, if you enjoy espresso coffee stouts. 4

Poured from a twelve oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours dark black with some foam at onset to a small layer. Strong espresso and coffee bean smell. Really roasted coffee taste and a strong coffee finish. Smooth chocolate malt in between. More coffee than beer. Bitter finish. Nice new stout. Like.

Tulip

A - Deep brown, light tan one finger head and some head lacing

S - HUGE coffee, note, lots of acidity, dark chocolate, a huge roasted note, a weird but nice funk note, slight hop, foliage and some charred wood

T - charred wood, very acidic diner like huge coffee note, an earthy hop, soil, greens, a hint of sweet malts, very dark chocolate and an all around roastiness

M - Medium minus body, low balance, low complexity, medium plus acidity and a very long coffee and chocolate finish

D/O - Note the most drinkable beer. Very nice with a sweet desert and a roaring fire. This screams the Christmas season. Better than most of the holiday pack, but not amazing

Final thought - below %6 abv and nothing amazing, this one is kept for the Christmas season
