Pours a slightly hazy medium amber color with a decent white head that leaves lots of stickage. Smells of spicy wheat and a pepper with hints of earth and salt. It kind of smells like a peppery macro wheat beer. the taste is sweet with honey like malts, a bit of a spicy peppery bite to mix things up a bit as well as a bit of mineral earthiness. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Kind of an easy drinking brew, a bit different. It's only my second gose, but I think I liked the Bruery version a little better.

For the second part of New Samuel Adams Beer Sunday, It's Gonna Be a Long Trail (Week 706), I am delving into the depths. This was one that I hunted down & then set aside, forgotten until today. Kenny Longshore was a fellow plankowner & shipmate aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60) as well as a fellow member of the SDBG. We attended the 25-year reunion in Norfolk, VA in 2014 & upon returning to his home in Whidbey Island, WA, he laid down for a nap & never awoke. I went back to Norfolk to assist in scattering his ashes at sea from the fantail of the Normandy & his widow was telling me about how much he enjoyed following my exploits. When I returned home, his ghost was awaiting me, perched atop a box of beer near my kitchen door & he is a regular visitor when I am drinking at home. We are joined by other fallen shipmates & even my late Pops on occasion, but Kenny is a regular. He kept pointing down towards the box upon which he was perched & it suddenly dawned on me.

From the Bottle: "Hops: Saaz Noble Hops[;] Malts: Two-Row Pale Malts, Munich, Malted and Unmalted Wheat[;] Special Ingredients: Brewed with Coriander and Salt"; "The 'Lost' Beer"; "A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it's vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that's full of flavors to discover."; "At Samuel Adams we love experimenting. This series of limited edition brews represents some of our favorite small batch creations."

I was kinda worried about what I might get from this old bottle, but it was not abused & when I Pop!ped the cap, nothing untoward occurred. I used the larger of my S.A. glasses since this was a 22-fl. oz. bottle & the notched bottom once more caused a good bit of nucleation, resulting in three-plus fingers of fizzy, foamy, light-tan head with modest retention that left moderate lacing behind in its wake. Color was a gorgeous Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very herbal, like a cross between oregano, ground black pepper, basil and cilantro with a saltiness that had become ingrained. Mouthfeel was medium, but very soft, very rounded, not at all tart or sour. Its time in the bottle had definitely mellowed its taste so that it was not tart, but boy, was it salty! This was clearly an experiment on the brewery's part since I don't believe that they would make it this salty now. Slowly, the pepperiness of the coriander began to assert itself, followed by the herbal flavors noted on the nose. The saltiness was the big takeaway, though. Either they had been heavy-handed with it initially or time had really infused it deeply into this beer. Finish was very dry, utterly thirst-quenching & extremely salty. Phew.

March 18th, 2015 - Samuel Adams makes a gose? That's enough to pique my interest. Deep auburn, and with a wavy, smooth head, it certainly doesn't look like much of a gose, but the nose is a little closer to the mark, with a bright wheat beer style flavor that leans heavy on the lemon and candied fruit. And the flavor is much the same, though leaves a deep impression. Bright and acidic, it awakens the tongue with a firm shock, and follows with some complex notes. It begins with a wheat flavor, turning floral in the center with lots of tangerine jam notes, before ending with a clean, crisp lemon aftertaste. I found the circuit of flavors both pleasant and curious. The coriander in the recipe is a bit tricky, and hard to pinpoint. It could be complementing the lemon, but it's hard for me to say.

Sat in my local store for over a year before I bought it I know because it always interested me not knowing the style. It smelled like soy sauce. Tasted of bad minerals dry salty aftertaste but from coriander taste not literal salt although it is brewed with it. If fresh I'd like to try the style again. But this maybe from sitting and aging was a drain pour

Mouthfeel wasn't good. Not even close to representing a Gose.

"A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it's vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that's full of flavors to discover." Brewed in the style of a German Gose. Available as a rotating Small batch series release in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Samuel Adams sensory pint glass. Served above 50º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Verloren pours a crisp foamy pastel white head over a moderately hazy golden amber body. Retention is above average and lacing is light and spotty. 3.75

(Smell) Cereal wheat, biscuity and grainy crystal malt, a touch of effervescent peppery spice, muted coriander and a relatively low perceived acidity for the style. Balance appears to be quite sweet and the body heavier than normal. Potency is medium. 3.25

(Taste) Chewy cereal wheat and bready, biscuity caramel with a soft husk graininess. Perceivably little acidity and very little saltiness too, Verloren is a largely malt-driven Gose although it's on the far edge of the Gose spectrum from my experiences with the style. It could be said that this beer should not be malt driven, but at least significantly balanced by the tart and salty edge of salt and funk, if not very light and highly quaffable. Finishes clean and short with a touch of grainy malt and musty spice. 3

(Mouthfeel) The texture is smooth, softly chewy and medium dry. Carbonation is moderate generating a medium frothiness and soft crispness. Body is medium+ for the style and medium overall. Balance is sweet and bready over salty, sourness, tart and funk. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters to note. 3.5

(Overall) My wavering confidence in the quality of the Samuel Adams small batch series continues to diminish as these former seldomly brewed styles aren't commonly brewed to traditional or even guideline standards. Verloren has a flavorful and potent blend of German malts and wheat, both of which drive the beer for the most part, as the other expected flavors in a Gose are shallow to absent in Verloren. Salt and coriander spice are in very short supply, and there is no tartness nor sour character to be found in this beer. This is easily one of the poorest representations of what should be a truly well balanced and highly enjoyable beer. It's drinkable, but there are far superior modern examples of excellent Gose beers by Anderson Valley and Westbrook that have emerged in the past two years that I strongly recommend over Verloren. 3.25
