Had this beer once before and liked it very much so picked up a six to see if it as good as I originally thought. Very strong appearance with an excellent smell. Not quite the hoppy smell or the bitter bite of the typical IPA which is good and bad. Overall this is an excellent beer and one I like very much and will but anytime in the future. Sam Adams got this one right.

A: Golden hue with a thick, frothy head; decent lacing

S: Subtle grapefruit and tropical fruits; some flower and pine aromas; a grainy, bready undertone but fairly subdued

T: Nice hop flavors up front--citrus, tropical fruit, and pine needles mingle fairly well--with a pleasant bready, malty backbone; I love the balance on this

F: Very creamy and chewy--really nice mouth feel

O: This is a fun beer; I really like how complex and yet still crisp this lager is

Pours the color of gold. No orange. No hues. Lager bubbles are making their way to the top in perfect clarity. There is a fat head of creamy bubbles that fell off unnoticed because I drank it so fast. Left wet and patchy lacing. carbonation refreshed upon each tilt of the glass.

This had a big bright nose. Everything you love about hops. Pine, citrus and floral. A bit of orange peel and a light bread. Tucked just under all that is a light yeasty lager scent. Spruce, pine needles. Lightly sweet malt.

Taste is exceptional. It has a tremendous hop forward character that is tempered and smooth. The hops are herbal and succulent with out a terrible bitter. They are not even really that tart and that's how it is one step toned down from an IPA. There is a bit of grapefruit on the palate though but a light tangerine takes hold and a bit of orange blossom honey. Bread is light and the lagering has done this beer a great favor. It has made it smooth and drinkable in the best way. The pine is intense but not sharp. A touch of resin to make the aftertaste last and plenty of earth. It's crisp and bold. There is just a bit of bitter in the dry finish.

Leave it to sam adams to mix these two beer styles so perfectly. This beer has tremendous flavor but is not the least bit harsh. it doesn't numb you with bitterness. It doesn't defeat you with a high abv. The mouthfeel is light to medium and the carbonation is perfect with a little bite to it. It is gentle enough and the lager character does indeed make it easy drinking.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at James Joyce in Ybor City. Served in a pint glass.

A: Nice gold color with a fair amount of chill haze. One finger of white foamy head and an average amount of visible carbonation.

S: Hoppy aromas up front (pine, grass and herbs), and some light malts and lager yeastiness. Low sulfur character, if any.

T: The clean malt flavors show the lager style, but the hops become a nice counterpoint - pine, grass, and some grapefruit citrus. It isn't a bitter hop bomb at all, just well-integrated.

M: Fairly light-bodied for an IPA, but certainly more do it than most American Pale Lagers. Carbonation sensation is fairly low, and the alcohol is quite well-hidden.

O: I found this to be pretty enjoyable. Recommended if you're in the mood for something a little different.
