Pours a cream, three-finger head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Almost clear amber color. Medium-strong carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and Belgian yeast nose, and flavor is sweet dark fruit. High ABV is hidden. $9.99 for a 750ml bottle from Madden Beverage Saco, Me.

Pours a hazed light brown color. Aroma of sweet malts, fruit and Belian yeast. In the taste, bready, doughy malts, brown sugar, raisin. A light bitterness rounds out the brew. Given the strength, the alcohol is not noticeable. Has a powdery, estery yeast character. Medium bodied, well carbonated. Overall, a decent strong ale but lacking punch and depth. The oak dries it out just enough.

Appearance is dark with a medium sized off-white head leaving light but nice lace.

Smell is strong, clove, caramel and toffee.

Taste is rich, heavy on over-carmelized sugar (attributed as prune). Some spicy and fruity estery notes provide depth. A little ethanol.

Mouthfeel is a bit heavy stylistically, somewhat thick. Fully carbonated and soft though.

Drinkability is ok. Rich flavor with well hidden ABV. But so rich, and not particularly elegant.

From notes.

A - Bright with a ruby red colour. Good carbonation, two finger beige head. Soptty lace and a finger of retenion.

S - Dark fruit, grapes, raisins. Nice and deep.

T - Dark fruit, a little yeast, a little spice, grapes, raisins, a touch of sourness.

M - Good mild carbonation with a full body and a nice sweetness that goes dry. Very nice feel.

O/D - No real alcohol evident. Started out a bit tame but became quite enjoyable and drinkable. Tasty stuff.

There's two types of Quads: those that you have to pour slowly on a steep angle so as not to generate too much head, and those you can pour entirely upright and not generate any head. Tetravis is closer to the latter; it produces a thin yet respectable froth but it took a pretty stiff pour to do so. Its colour meanwhile is a dark, murky rum cake tone.

While we're dissecting it, there's another telltale way of deviating Quads: those that smell remarkably like some kind of raisin, plum, dried cherry, and fig compote, and those that just have a purely superficial semblance of one. In this regard Tertravis is more like the former, closer to the authentic Belgian classics than most modern, new-world wannabes.

Drinkers won't know it, but this beer was blended with the Brett-inoculated sour beer Kosmic Mother Funk. I don't get any sourness; there's far too much dried fruit and molasses-like sweetness to detect even a remote tartness. Likewise, the beer's rather flat, borderline syrupy mouthfeel doesn't let on that this is actually fermented with a strain of Champagne yeast.

Sam Adams does a great job of hiding the alcohol (10.2%) from everything except the brain; all that potency goes to your head but completely bypasses the palate. There's so much summer plum and sweet malt that the booze doesn't register. There are also hints of mace, anise and clove which help distract (though they're admittedly subtle). The oak isn't really all that evident.

Tetravis has many unconventional elements for a Quad (being barrel-aged, blended with a sour ale, fermented with champagne yeast) but it actually compares quite favorably with the style's best and most time-honoured examples. I mean, between this and, say, Rochefort or St Bernardus there's no contest, but, credit where credit is due, this fares better than most American brands.

Bomber into a duvel tulip

Dark brown pours into a creamy 1 finger head which leaves some lacing as it dries

Currents right away, then sweet banana bread and malts

Taste definitly is dark fruit, then spicy cloves, finished by malt and caramel

The fruit almost stands out too much. But as I keep sipping I'm liking it more and more

Color- dark murky reddish brown amber. Full, thick head.

Aroma- complex sweet and hoppy aroma with hints of spice (clove).

Taste- A heavy but mellow brew. Starts with subtle notes of candied pear then transitions into a caramel middle (similar to a Rochfort 8) with hints of vanilla, finishing with raisin, clove, and mild hop notes. A complex and beautiful brew by Sam Adam's. Don't serve cold, serve cool.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted on 1/25/14

Pours a clear dark honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, banana, spice, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toast, and alcohol flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a really nice smell but the flavors are a bit too boozy in my opinion.

Pours a lightly hazy orange amber color with a huge bubbly off white head that persists forever. The aroma is huge on the tart current with hints of clove and raisin. Moderate amount of dark sugary malt as well as a far to present hit of papery oxidation. The flavor is heavy on the clove and pepper with a moderate amount of sugary sweetness. Tart currant as well as bits of lemon and orange and like the aroma a bit too much oxidation. Medium to thick body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet bubbly mouthfeel. Meh, another letdown from the Sam Adams barrel room. Oxidized and a bit spicy for my liking.

A: This poured a cloudy dark mahogany with lots of fluffy light tan head.
S: It smelled like roasted barley and earthy pumpernickel, with some spicy Belgian yeast and dry clove and oak.
T: It tasted like sweet nutty malt and roasted barley, with some spicy Belgian yeast and candi sugar and earthy pumpernickel. It had a clean mostly sweet aftertaste.
M: It was oily with lots of fine natural carbonation. Nice slick body.
D: This was a surprisingly good beer. The scent and taste were fairly complex and enjoyable. The body was great, and the finish was really smooth, so it was easy to drink. Would probably age well, but doesn't need it. Solid brew, although I wish it had a little more barrel character.

750ml bottle served in a Prairie teku.

A - Pours a tawny brown with red highlights. A firm tan head holds well and clings the glass.

S - Brown sugar, dates, figs, apples, banana liqueur, old candy, fruit cake,

T - Sugary malt, lots of fruit, apples, prunes, but raisins and dates are very prominent. Vanilla and woody tannins along with some noticable hops that give the candy sweet malt base some balance. Finishes fruity with some tannin/woody like bitterness.

M - Medium full body, foamy carbonation, finishes crisp with a rounded woody bitterness. The alcohol becomes sharp when allowed to warm up.

Excellent aroma. The wood doesn't stand out but is layered underneath the fruit and malt. There's noticeable bitterness that almost clashes with the alcohol. It would get in the way if it were any stronger but really helps with the sweetness. Pretty good for an American made Quad.

A - Pours a brown-amber with a fair amount of carbonation. A thick head formed, which dissipated at a normal rate. Just a few bubbles rising. Overall fairly clear, but had just a slight haze.

S - Belgian yeast is huge up front. Lot's of dark fruit. Noticed grape, fig, and raisin most heavily. Also slight hints of cinnamon, peach and tobacco leaf. Not much malt noticed, and no hop aroma noticed. Slight hint of alcohol.

T - Very, very Belgian-y. Dark fruits are immediately noted. Mostly grape and fig, as with the aroma. I did note some toasted and slightly sweet malts, which I didn't detect in the aroma. Beer finished very well, with a slight alcohol warmth, and a heavy punch of plum and prune.

F - Lot's of carbonation. Not sticky or too thick, but can burn slightly. Certainly drinkable.

O - Not quite as good as their New World Tripel, but another Belgian well executed by Sam Adams. Complex taste, extremely drinkable. I've had better Belgian's, but I've also had worse Belgian's that cost a lot more. So in other words, excellent brew, and worth the $.

1 pint 9.4 fl oz black glass bottle with fantastic smokestack-style design, classy intricate label art, and branded hood-and-wire cap (aka cage) over a branded cork acquired at me local Colorado bottle shop and served into a large size Westvleteren stem-goblet in me parents' gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are high; I've really enjoyed a couple barrel room series beers and quadrupel is me favourite style. Reviewed as a quadrupel because the label identifies it as such. 10.2% ABV confirmed. "Ale aged in oak barrels."

Served cold - straight from me fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a three finger wide head of gorgeous creamy complexion and beige-khaki colour head. Smooth consistency. Soft and fluffy. Nice even lacing coats the sides of the glass as the head slowly recedes. Head retention is good for the high ABV - about 5-6+ minutes.

Body colour is an elegant red of above average vibrance. No yeast particles are visible. Appears well-carbonated. Translucent and quasitransparent.

Overall, it's looking pretty good for a quadrupel, but isn't unique or special. There are no egregious flaws. I'm really looking forward to it.

Sm: Rich refined berry and currant notes. Evocative raisin, fig, plum, dates, prunes, and grape. Candi sugar. Caramelized sugars. Very timid burnt character. The dark fruit is fantastic. The oak is extremely subtle; I barely get any at all, but it does lend the aroma some additional depth. I can't stress enough how great and evocative the dark fruit is; fig is right there. It does have some finite biscuity yeast character.

An alive, inviting aroma of moderate to high strength.

No alcohol or hop character is detectable.

T: The dark fruit isn't quite as smashing here as it was in the aroma. I get fig, prunes, dates, and some limited plum, but the only true evocative note is the grape - which isn't exactly a great flavour in a quadrupel. Caramelized sugars. Cream. Raisin. Belgian biscuit malt, Belgian dark malts, and candied sugars. Biscuity yeast character. Faint oak, but no real toastiness or refined wood. Pumpernickel. Faint vague spice. Light molasses. A biteen too sweet. Certainly sipid.

The balance doesn't come together quite as well as I'd like. It's fairly cohesive, but not at all gestalt. The grape is too strong. It lacks the delicate fragility of the very best quadrupels.

Decent complexity. Okay subtlety. Lacks intricacy, but you could argue it's nuanced. I'm shocked by the lack of depth to the oak. Above average depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour.

No alcohol or hop character comes through.

Mf: Some limited creaminess. Smooth and wet. Decent thickness and body. Fair presence on the palate. Not an ideal mouthfeel by any means. Overcarbonated.

Not delicate, fleetingly light, or fragile like the best quadrupels. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, scratchy, rough, harsh, or astringent.

Dr: Certainly downable. It started off really nice on the appearance and aroma, but fell apart afterwards. I really had high hopes for this one, but it just didn't come together quite like it needed to. An interesting and inspired attempt at a quadrupel from an American brewery, but ultimately it falls short. It's certainly worth trying, and I think the brewers really went for it - but it's by no means a great beer in the style and isn't worth the price (at least not more than once). While I wouldn't recommend it to friends or trade partners, it's one of Sam Adams' more complex worthwhile beers. I'm glad I got to try it. Easily above average.

Perhaps worth aging.

Deep, brownish-burgundy hue with slight haziness. Nice head formation and retention. Some streaks of lacing, though not very persistent. Nice sugary (though not excessively), dark fruit aroma that I'd expect in a well-made quad. Ripe raisin, date, and plum. Rum-like sweetness, though there are no boozy alcohol notes.

Flavor starts off with a rush of sweetness, a bit too much, but it attenuates toward the finish. Mild bitterness - just enough to counter the sweetness. Candi sugar and ripe fruits abound. Somewhat syrupy mouthfeel with a gentle carbonation. More depth of flavor and less sugariness would help this.

Tetravis is an impressive quad that generally hits the mark for the defining features of the style. While Sam Adams has never really nailed any of the big styles, they already produce good beers at good price points.

Bomber > Alpine Spring bow-tie glass

A - Clear darker amber with two finger of fast dissipating off white head, no lacing.
S - Really nice aroma, belgian yeast, clove, tart grape, dark cherries, raisins, a little oak, caramel malt.
T - As the label says, big on raisins and clove, belgian yeast and spice, banana, tart cherries.
M - Sweet and a little clingy, decent feel, not a lot of burn.
O - Not a huge fan of these styles, but for BBC its decent, nice complex flavor.

A: After finally getting the cork out with a loud pop it poured a purplish-burgundy color if that makes any sense at all. An off white head appears with decent head retention provide moderate lacing

S: Black currants, some raisins, figs, nuts and candy. Pretty tame and straightforward. It's what I was expecting. I was disappointed in the lack of barrel influence on the nose.

T: Dark fruits and black currants with a little booze sting. The raisins and figs, black currants rein supreme on the palate. I'm really not receiving any of the barrel wood, no vanilla, just a wee bit of Earthiness. The finish is stinging, moderately sweet and lightly sticky

M: Medium bodied, sweet and sticky, lower carvbonation which I find odd considering the pop of the cork

O: Meh

The bottle claims a light quad but I have a pretty dark beer in my snifter. Large sour like head, weak fades fast, forms first from the brown watery body. In the glass this appears slightly denser and darker than an amber and somewhere in the brown ale world.

The nose gives off dark fruits, rum, raisins, currents, Belgian spices. A really interesting aroma.

The flavor is that of a quad with a sour finish and some sherry like notes. As a result you get the dark fruits, deep sugars, and Belgian spices of a quad fixed with the lightly sour/funky effects of a barrel. I hate to say it be Sam Adams has shown that barrel aging of quads can turn average ok American efforts into down right tasty treats. Dear every other American making quads, do this more!

This goes down pretty easy given there's still a clear alcohol presence but the sour notes kinda help it. I get a lot and I mean a lot of wine notes with this beer as well but it's just so much more complex and nuanced than wine.

This is a winner for Sam Adams plain and simple. It isn't my style or what I'd want, but if you want to blow a wine snob away, this is another option.

large three finger frothy head with good lacing on a very nice clear amber with maroon hues body. The beer actually looks very impressive. Aroma of plum, sour cherries, banana bread, caramel, spices (cinnamon), Belgian yeast. Flavor is a little disappointing after the aroma but still nice although the fruitness covers up some of the Belgian character. Flavor notes include, plum, raisin, currant, caramel, red wine. This one is fairly sweet too. Thin for the style, moderate carbonation. I felt the look and aroma couldnt be lived up to by the flavor. One of the better ones of this series for sure though.

750 ml bottle was poured into a long stemmed chalice.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a crimson brown color with no clarity but bubbles can be seen coming up the glass.

Smell: Spicy, bready, caramel, plums, raisins, cloves, a little booze, and banana.

Taste: Spicy, cloves, plums, raisins, bananas, caramel, bready malts, warm alcohol,

Mouthfeel: Smooth, boozy, spicy, chewy, medium bodied, and medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty solid quad and reasonably priced too. Enjoyable and would get it again.

Overall: Nice and fruity quad. Complex. I would get this one again. It may be my favorite in the barrel room collection.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a snifter.

A: Medium brown. Pours a 1 finger, foamy, brown-white head. Settles pretty quickly, but not completely; leaving a really nice foamy blanket. Persistent spider web lacing.

S: Roasted malt, cherry, molasses, licorice, and oak.

T: Peaty malt tone with a nice little fruity palate.... cherry and raspberry. Seems like a little basil in there.

M: Hearty body, a bit of a syrupy feel. Bittersweet finish. High alcohol a little deceiving.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Nice head, and some persistent lacing. Nose is a great combination of malt, fruit, bitter, sweet, and wood components. Peaty and fruity with a little savory spice. Overall, this is a really good quaff.

Always happy to try Sammy's Barrel aged stuff, sometimes they even live up to my expectations...

Opens with a resounding pop, pours an effervescent orange/copper with a pinky of cream colored head. Average lacing

S: Dark fruit & woody hops, some cinnamon & vanilla, plus banana & pears

T: Dark fruit, a touch of boozeyness & juicy fruit gum up front. Figs, black currants, raisins & rubber bans as this warms, plus a little more leafy hops, plus a modicum of oakyness/dryness. plus some golden raisin & pears. Finishes with jammyness, a little banana peel, oakyness, plus a bit of raisin

MF: Medium bodied, dry, boozey with near zero carbonation

A nice Quad, not much barrel age aspects here, but not completely MIA. I would possibly buy this again, seems like it would age great; like the complexity on display already. Drinks easy for the heft & style

From the 26 fl. oz. corked, caged bottle. Sampled on August 16, 2013. The cork took some tugging to remove. Served at about 50 degrees.

The pour is a very handsome looking mahogany brown with ruby red highlights and a moderate tan head that settles down after a few moments.

The aroma gives off plenty of Quad vibes such as dark malts, Belgian yeast, Belgian brown sugar, molasses, caramel, and raisin.

Bold body with some astringency.

The taste is sweet malt forward with a quick eruption of pepper and hops finishing it off. The alcohol could have been a little more subdued but it reminds me to take it easy. I found it to be a nice offering from Samuel Adams.

A: Pours a nice mahogany/amber color with 2 fingers of head that slowly recedes to a 1" cap that lasts for a while

S: Get the Belgian yeast right out front. It imparts a good bit of dark fruits and spiciness. Behind that is some sweet maltiness, light oak, and a hint of alcohol

T: Starts off with a bit of spiciness from the yeast and then goes into a good bit of dark fruit. Fig, raisin, currant, and plum all stand out. Get some clove notes from the esters as well. After that, some sweet maltiness comes out along with some of the oakiness of the barrel. Alcohol brings everything together in the end, imparting some more fruit and spiciness

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: This is a definitely an impressive take on the quad style by Jim Koch and company. One of the better American versions for sure. BBC/SA take a lot of slack from many people on here, and it leads to a lot of their brews being underrated (at least IMO). This one here is a winner, and in a style that in generally fairly difficult to pull off. Great job and great brew!
