This will be my seCANd entry for New Odds & Sods Beer Sunday (Week 651). I acquired this CAN while attending a CANvention. I was interested to learn that Columbus, IN is about 50 miles south of IND, IN along I-65, FWIW.

From the CAN: "On cold rural nights, when the frost bites and the moon is high, you may note distant snarling or retrace massive footprints in the freshly laid snow. Be alert, gentle reader, for the Barn Yeti is nigh."

The Crack! was unique in that I could hear snarling coming from within its cylinder! My gentle Glug aroused even more snarling & I became fearful of what was to come. What came was more than three fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head that seemed determined to stick around & frighten me. Color was jet Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), doing nothing to allay my fears as nothing could be seen in the inky darkness. I leaned in for a sniff & was greeted by hissing & snarling & I jumped back in utter surprise. Regrouping, I tried again, this time getting whiffs of dark chocolate, licorice, coffee, dried dark fruits & some monstrous smell underlying it all, as though something was lurking in those depths. Eeek! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but close. The taste was very roasty, lightly smoky and quite bitter with loads of coffee and anise flavors. Phew! I had just finished my morning cuppa coffee, so this dovetailed nicely. Warming, a light dark chocolatiness began to emerge from the darkness, but so did something else. An unidentifiable entity, the stuff of which nightmares are made. Finish was semi-dry, very roasty & slightly smoky, but with just enough of an offsetting sweetness to keep it from being outright dry. It was pretty wild, in sum, but it just was not really my thing. YMMV.

First Belgian Strong Ale that I recall having. Looks like a PORTER should, actually much darker than my virgin eyes (to this style) expected. Good khaki head minimal retention after a moment. Nice ring and lacing. Smells smokey. Roasted charred coco nibs, bitters, hmm interesting notes all over the tongue too on tastes, following the nose, ton more smoked out on tongue. Feels...like my experience with many porters. I'm not disappointed here, but it's like a hi abv smokehouse porter. Smooth viscous sweet feel. Overall, a bit confused. It's good tho.

Enjoyed from the can in a snifter. This ale pours a deep muddy brown with a nice head of light tan foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin pooling layer, and VERY nice lacing. Nose of chocolate, sweet malts, vanilla, and faint herbal notes. Flavors exceed the nose with strong bakers chocolate and anise (licorice) on the front and middle of the taste with sweet candy sugars on the sides. Light vanilla notes take hold on the back and then fade to a moderately bitter chocolate fudge note. Good mouth feel with medium carbonation, and a bitter malt finish with warming booze on the back. Overall a great brew, but more of an imperial stout than a Belgian strong. A solid brew and a new one to me from this brewery-----I would LOVE to visit this one!

Cheers

A - Dark brown/black color with a very thin toffee colored lacing ring.

S - Bourbon, light chocolate, and wet paper.

T - Bourbon from start to finish and is a little harsh up front but more mellow and smooth and the back end. Cherries, vanilla, chocolate, oak. Lingering chocolate bitterness with some bourbon after the sip.

M - Velvety, thick, full bodied, and a dry finish.

O - A good beer but the bourbon is a little too harsh and needs to be a little smoother around the edges.

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a beige head that fades somewhat quickly though it does a decent job of lacing

Smell: Chocolate, vanilla and licorice

Taste: Chocolate-flavored bread, up front, with vanilla and star anise tones developing, in the middle; some spicy yeast, after the swallow, but the finish is a return to the chocolate and vanilla

Mouthfeel: Full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A creative melange of flavor; a real category bender

Nice head and color; flavorful base, with just enough hints of chocolate and vanilla.

I'm not one for "gimmicky" beers, with a week base and crazy flavors. This is a nicely made beer that happens to have unique flavors. It would be good even without the chocolate and vanilla hints.

A unique refresher; it's no wonder it has become so popular in the area

On tap at Bloomington Beer Fest. Maybe it was too old but they served it and it was just OK.
