The second stop on my crawl through Osaka was the Grand Dolphins, an easy-to-find and centrally located bar marked by a big, glowing yellow sign in the shape of a Hoegaarden glass. Inside it's dark and sort of Germanic and full of all sorts of exciting beer paraphenalia - is that bottle of Oude Gueuze Vieille for sale? How about that awesome Chimay sign? Or the Gouden Carolus coaster?

As for the beer, it was a good selection, but there actually wasn't that much you couldn't get elsewhere, and for less money. It's mostly Belgian with a focus on abbey-style ales, with a handful of English ales and German offerings and some random international selections. On tap was Hoegaarden and Chimay White - very nice, although I felt a little cheated because the bartender poured only to about a centimeter below the 250 cl line. Isn't that against the law in Belgium?

So the beer was good, but the food was hugely disappointing. Our bread was stale and our frites clearly came from a frozen bag, although they had a tasty, tangy mayonnaise sauce on them. Overall, Grand Dolphins is worth checking out, and the subdued, shady atmosphere might make it a good date spot. But to me the prices would probably keep me from going back, since you can get the same beer at a lower price at Beer & Bear (and their food is better, too).

This is a fantastic place with about 80 beers with Hoegaarden and Hartland (Kirin) on tap. The food is Belgian, with jazz playing softly in the back ground. English is not spoken, but extremely friend and will do double back flips to make sure you are happy. I would say about three quarters of the beer are Belgian and the rest are from the rest of the world. A blessing to Osaka, this restaruant is.
