I stumbled across this place while killing time in Richland until Shrub Steppe opened for lunch. It's a little bit north of what is considered "downtown" Richland in a strip mall-type location set in what is mostly a residential area.

The layout is totally different to the other Mid Columbia location in Kennewick. I think this is dictated by moving into someone else's former business space and doing a minimal amount of remodeling. The one in Kennewick was a portion of a former corporate grocery store. I have no idea what this place used to be, but it appears to be smaller than the one in Kennewick, with totally different dimensions.

While the majority of the space is devoted to wine and spirits - hence the name - , there is a dedicated walk-in cooler area that is fairly large. There are also some beers stacked outside the cooler. The lighting, while not exactly dim, is not as strong as it would be in a normal grocery or big box store, so light-struck beer shouldn't be too prevalent. I believe there is also a growler-filling station.

Service was limited to the cashier. I was the only customer and I saw no other employees. I chose a Courage RIS (first time I'd seen it) and a beer from Bayern Brewing Co. that was new to me. The employee informed me he couldn't break up the 6-pk I had taken it from. Since it wasn't available amongst the singles, and there is no law against breaking up a 6-pk in Washington, I tried to convince him to sell the single bottle to me and told him I wouldn't be buying a sixer of it in any event. He remained polite but stuck to his guns and refused to let me purchase it, so I spent less money in his establishment than I was initially going to. I've heard from someone in the beer distribution business that this local chain is not doing as well as it would like, so I'm a little mystified why someone would refuse to sell something just to keep a 6-pk intact when there was no shortage of other 6-pks of that beer.

The beer selection overall was about the same as the one in Kennewick, but this one seemed a little more picked-over. It was still better than pretty much everything except their other location. If you happen to be in Richland, it's probably your best bet for bottled or canned beer. If in Kennewick, there's no need to drive to Richland unless you've called them and they have something the other store is sold out of.
