Appearance: Mostly clear (just a touch of haziness) with a warm golden glow, and frothy foamy white head with a pretty good retention and good active carbonation.

Aromatics: Lemon and yellow grapefruit citrus mixed with scents of yeast and freshly harvested wheat/hay, a little bit of piney resin hops and some grassy notes tie it all up.

Taste: A fairly grainy and hop forward with some of those citrus notes carrying forward into the taste. A fairly pronounced green juniper earthy palate through the middle with a slight pique of dried spices (maybe coriander + fenugreek?) and the yeasty character comes through in the end just underneath a slighty boozy hit.

Mouth: Creaminess from the head blends a crisp medium body to slide gracefully over the tongue. Lots of carbonation keeps the party going and delivers an ever so subtle spicy tingle to a relatively dry and bitter finish that lingers a little bit on the centre of the tongue and top of the palate.

Overall: Not bad. As far as IPA’s go I rather enjoyed the balance of the “lighter” blonde character to any number of the more hoppy IPA cousins. It is a good way to switch up the IPA playing field and turn out something that is easy to drink, clean and refreshing, and slightly different from your average IPA offering.

Pairing: This beer is fresh and clean with a good shot of earthy bitterness so I’m going to suggest two paths - either a nice flatbread topped with roasted vegetables throw some red peppers, onions, garlic, zucchini, and tomatoes tossed with olive and salt in to 200°F oven for 25 minutes. than added them to your flat bread with some light tomato sauce and a speckling of mozza. OR try a nice beef stew/beef bourguignon, not overly spiced and lots of chunky root vegetables - carrots, potatoes, squash, celery, pearl onion. I like the red wine version (beef bourguignon) better because the wine will most likely enhance the bitters of the brew a bit better.

650ml bottle - I know this brewery is all about the Belgian way of things, so why did they make a big deal about brewing a Belgian IPA - it's not like this will be a full-on, PAC-NW example of the style, right?

This beer pours a rather hazy, medium golden amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, chunky, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves some stratified cloud pattern lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells lightly of grainy and bready pale malt, some lemon, lime, and white grapefruit citrus zest, further indistinct tropical stone fruit, fresh-cut hay, subtle earthy and mildly funky yeast, and a bit of plain leafy, weedy, and piney green hoppiness. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, a lesser spicy wheatiness, some hard to pin down edgy spice - clove and black pepper, maybe - sauced-up mushy pear, mixed domestic citrus notes, a pretty tame estery yeastiness, and more understated floral, leafy, and damp and resinous piney hops.

The carbonation is adequate for the inherent base nature here, via its only timidly aggressive frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, as the expected yeast onslaught fails to materialize. It finishes off-dry, the fruit-tinged malt lingering most readily.

Overall, this is still more of a gently hopped Belgian blonde ale, than anything particularly IPA-like, even the Low Countries versions. That said, it is rather easy to put back, without even a mere whisper from the 15-proof booze contingent. Worth checking out if, like yours truly, you usually find this style more than a tad disjointed and off-putting.
