A solid fruit wheat.
16oz draft poured into a pint glass shows a hazy pinkish hue, like fresh grapefruit juice, and briefly floats a 1/4in of tight, white bubbles. Fantastic artistic, stacked lacing from base to rim.

Aroma is subtle but fresh strawberry flesh. No candy here.

Flavor matches and basil sits on top like garnish, all resting on a sweetish malt base and slight yeast reminder at the finish. The flavor is even more subtle as it warms.

Mouthfeel is lighter leaning medium and an almost drying finish.

Overall a well crafted here, but drink it cold as both the aroma and flavor suffer.

Canned 3/26/18; drank 4/11/18 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque pale pink appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice bright white head; strong, frothy beer.

Strawberry & mild basil notes on the nose, as advertised.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Sweet strawberry flavors up front; mildly dry basil notes on the finish.

I get no hefeweizen vibes at all here; however, I do get an enjoyable fruit beer with a nice basil note for ballast. This would make a killer summer beer...

this is a really fun beer, the one that jumped off the menu at me as intriguing and must try. its pink and hazy and frothy like a good hefe should be, and the aroma is packed with real strawberry character, sweet and a little tart, ripe and juicy, possibly more like frozen than fresh, it has a smoothie sort of vibe to it, but no mistaking real fruit. the basil is more subtle in the nose, italian and green and obvious still, but well behind the fruit. the banana estery yeast gives even more of a breakfast smoothie tone to this, but it works great with both the additives. the flavor is equally tasty as the nose, more basil than i could smell, mostly on the back end, a nice way to break up the almost over the top sweetness of the berries, which are here from start to finish. some wheaty body to this but not a lot of grain flavor, and the yeast seems a little overwhelmed by the fruit sugar, but it does still taste like a hefeweizen to me underneath the extra ingredients. a super clever beer, and a nice balance between the strawberry and basil. i wish it was a bit drier, less summery and refreshing than it could be, but its unique and absout as well done as it could be. well worth trying!

Perfect balance of strawberries with light basil and hint of hefe yeast. Very well-crafted beer by forbidden root.

I'm quite a fan of this, although it's not what you might expect from strawberry and basil. The overall impression is much more botanical than fruity; not only does the basil hold its own, the strawberry tastes like young berries, or at least you get as much seed as you get sweetness. Strawberry is tricky to work with, but Forbidden Root has done a great job with it, very much in keeping with their reputation for interesting herbal flavors.

Pours darker yellow with little head. Smell is heavy basil with a hint of strawberry in the background. Taste is very similar. Initial strong basil influence that fades into a hint of strawberry. Interesting beer. The flavors do blend together well.

I had this in a flight of five a year ago, so I decided not to review; too hard to sort out the flavors and herbs of five beers.
But today, I had Strawberry Basil by itself (in a can) and I sort of get what the experiment is about.
It clearly has wheat and its yeast contributes to the production of fruity smells and tastes. The basil replaces some hops.
But classic hefes have banana, at least a solid hint of banana. I don't get that. But because I don't get my banana, I can't hold it against this as a hefe. Styles should be experimented with. And this is a clever invention of the hefe to use this classic summer drink combo of strawberry and a minty herb.

I like how Forbidden Root experiments and even how most their beers are designed for food. But I live only a mile away and have not visited more than twice. So, FB's pairings have not clicked for me yet.
