a really good stout here, and rightly celebrated as one of the best examples of the style in town here. there are no frills or tricks to this one at all, just a straight forward take on a stout, with a big roasty and dry malt base, a smooth and hearty body, and a wonderful little bit of complexity to it thats sets it apart. its highly refined, and from a technical standpoint, its easily one of the best beers i have had from these guys so far. cool notes of unbrewed coffee grounds, bitter and earthy like that, a charred note and maybe trace smoke, a little bit of bitter cocoa too, but nothing is forced here, and the mash is just expertly done. maybe some oats for body, but i dont get a big starchy feel to it, its much more delicate than that. a light bit of a peppery element to the grain is cool too, and the lack of any middle sweetness is a nice touch as well, so many of these try to balance the roast with a caramel malt center, and it ends up taking away from the darker grain flavors, but not here. subtle nuttiness and an almost english element to it in the taste, coffee again, and a remarkably dry finish that doesnt make it any less rich or indulgent. really drinkable example of the style too, with the right amount of bitterness at the end from the hopping and no distractions or unnecessary adjuncts. its delicious beer, tastes and feels like exactly what i want from the style, and overall its one of the highlights in their portfolio. i wouldnt change a thing, but this would be righteous on oak!

Bottled November 28th 2018.

It pours black with a healthy head of tan foam, some lacing.

Smells of pine, roasted charred malt, molasses.

Taste is of pine, roasted malt, burnt malt, some smoke, little bit of sweetness, lots of bitterness. Tasty.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

A hoppy Stout this is.

I had this beer on-tap in a tulip at the brewery.

Appearance: black hue with a finger of tan foam and a good lace left on the glass. Attractive.

Smell: a dash of dry roast plus a fair dose of yeastiness. Not bad, but could use a little complexity.

Taste: char, a little sweetness, a little caramel, and a roasty bitterness to finish up. Stouty!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: a decent stout indeed. Not as well-rounded as it could be, but not bad.

Smooth, Roasty, Malty, Char

Pitch black with a glorious three-fingered chocolate-colored foam head, this beer serves up deep roastiness in the nose with chocolate cake and port wine suggestions. Silky smooth and a bit viscous with a nice chewiness. A bitter hop bite up front with some herbal notes is gently folded into layers of rich and delicious maltiness, including more coffee and chocolate, as well as blackberries, toffee, black treacle syrup, and tangy molasses. Not overly sweet, with a bit of acridness, char, and a hint of smoke, too. And the alcohol is well-hidden. Black Cliffs is a solid, borderline Imperial, Stout.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #117 (October 2016).

Nice and bitter stout, just the right amount. pours with initial tall beige creamy head. Streaky lacing, aroma is pure roast grains, burnt toast. Taste is the same with some added semisweet chocolate. Creamy, slick mouthfeel.
