I spotted this brew while making a stop at my local Trader Joe's. It came in a caged and corked 750ml bottle with no "best before" date on the label. Poured into a Duvel tulip glass, Angelique had a ruddy dark red color topped by a towering vanilla colored head. Lots of vigorous carbonation kept the head alive throughout.
The nose had a certain dark fruitiness to it. It came off as quite sweet and malty but was missing the usual spiciness I've noticed in other Belgian ales. This had a truncated spiciness, missing that clove or coriander aroma.
The taste was much the same as what the nose offered. Some bready malt flavor carried the day here along with a supporting cast of caramel and date or fig. Then a quick flourish of bitterness and an abrupt end in the finish. Strange and disconcerting. The feel was medium in body, smooth thanks to the heavy carbonation, and a little thin.
Overall, this wasn't what I had hoped for and wouldn't spend $6 on again. I'd rather shell out a couple more bucks for a bottle of Duvel or a Unibroue. This came off as a Two Buck Chuck of Belgian beers.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich amber hue with a tiny hint of haze and a thin layer of light tan foam. Not bad, though head retention is minimal.

Smell: sweet malt aroma with a strong apple & pear aroma with a distinct cider character. I like these characteristics, usually, but in this case they are quite bright and just about over the time. To me they seem indicative of too much sugar in the recipe.

Taste: good dark fruit flavor of plums, dates and a light hint of raisin. Malty and with only a fraction of the cidery character of the aroma. I like it.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and an interesting silkiness. Somewhat creamy but overall quite smooth -- I like it.

Overall: a surprising dubbel. From the aroma, I wouldn't guess it would be terribly good, but the flavor profile ticks the boxes for me. Decent.

Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a flute glass. Pours semi-opaque dark orange with small off-white head. Aroma of light caramel malt, dark fruit. Flavor is light fruit and malt with a slightly bitter and nutty finish. Seems tame, actually like a somewhat watered down dubbel. Tastes good, but just is not that complex or intense. The flavor decreased on warming in the glass; not that great after opening. Medium bodied.

Appearance: Ruby-red pour with a smallish head, very little remains, little lacing

Smell: Fruit, bananas, figs, plums, brandy, cinnamon, other spices.

Taste: Very spicy. Also, lots of sugar and fruits like figs and dates. Everything is a tad muddled.

Mouthfeel: medium body and carbonation, taste hangs around

Overall: Mediocre beer, would do in a pinch but would prefer other options. Gentleman's C - average in every way.

This was on sale for $2.89 at a local grocery store. Couldn't pass it up.

Poured into a chalice. Dark caramel brown color, with alot of sediment, a bit of froth appeared and dissipated to nothing as quickly as it appeared.

Smell and taste - really no complexity at all. I smell and taste caramel (just on the brain I guess), very sweet, it's inviting, but really unexpected. No hops or spice or anything really exciting or noteworthy. Malty though, almost chewy. There really is no aftertaste. My wife and I shared it. It wasn't bad and it got sweeter and sweeter with each drink...somewhat like the caramel off an apple. It's drinkable, not one of my favorites for the style. Definitely worth a taste though.

Pours a dark coppery mahogany with a lot of sediment and a decent pale tan head. Aroma is fruity and a little sweet with a malty underpinning. Fruity, slightly woody flavor has a malty undertone and a hint of caramel. Texture is quite smooth and just a little tingly. Overall, worthy of at least a try.

A: This poured a cloudy light mahogany with some light tan head.
S: It smelled like orange and some honey and alcohol, with rum raisin and a little honey wheat.
T: It tasted like orange and honey wheat, with a little raisin and copper and alcohol. It had a mild bittersweet aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with medium natural carbonation. Pretty nice.
D: This was a good beer, but the scent and taste had a distinct alcohol element (but without the typical alcohol heat). Confusing but otherwise enjoyable. It had decent body and was easy to drink. Not nearly as good as Mystique, but it wasn't bad.

750ml corked and caged bottle - had this sitting in the cellar for over a year. split and served in Chimay chalices.

A - poured (somewhat aggressively) yet barely forming any foam, only a few floating islands of bubbles and ring remain after a minute. the beer is hazy, deep dark amber in color.

S - strong scent of molasses, tobacco, dark fruits (heavy on the raisins), and toasted nuts. not very befitting of the Dubbel style, yet somewhat oddly alluring. bordering English barleywine.

T - begins on the sweeter end, with plums and raisins. slightly spicy yeast, gingerbread, and bready malts dominate the second half. tobacco, honey, slightly tart green apples, and very weak black tea finish it out.

M - thin body, with moderate yet slightly dull carbonation. missing that wonderful "fluffiness" of other Dubbels. falls apart a bit near the end. finishes slightly sticky, with lingering malty sweetness.

D - well...certainly not the best, and a touch unique for the style. picks up many characteristics of a sweet, lightly hopped barleywine mixed with a weak hop tea. drinkable? yes. enjoyable? thats up to you.

A: Chocolate brown body with red highlights and a pin stripe creamy head with a lot of sticky lace.

S: Rich, chocolate malts; fruits; caramel; and a little nuttiness.

T: An initial sweetness on the tongue with hints of malts, toffee, brown sugar, and dark fruits. I'm also getting a little almonds and chocolate. A very earthy tasting beer, but very good.

M: Smooth, medium-bodied. Kind of thick in the mouth, but very mellow carbonation.

D: I love this beer, definately a new favorite.

A: Pours a deep murky mahogany color. Somewhat cloudy but has a nice color to it. Poured with a bit of creamy head on top with some lacing on the side of the glass.

S: Has a slight funk to the smell, not necessarily bad, but smells just slightly non-fresh. Toasted malts detectable and I think a slight scent of nuts.

T: Somewhat sweet, no taste of hops, tasted quite a bit like hazelnut on the finish. Alcohol is hard to detect, not bad overall.

M: Medium amount of carbonation, sits very lightly on the tongue, overall very good feel.

D: Definitely drinkable, very smooth, again, with a 7% ABV, not easy to detect the alcohol. Definitely would have another.

As with so many Belgians, Angelique is a gorgeous, gorgeous thing. A murky, cloudy garnet color sits under an abundant head of cream. All kinds of lace sticking to the glass.

Dang, I don't know what I'm smelling, but it's unusual. Not bad or spoiled-smelling, but I'm reminded of seaweed for some reason, or at least a very musty cellar with rotting fruit in the corner. A clearer picture of plum fruit and Belgian candi sugar emerges in the nose, and that's about the best I can do with this interesting aroma.

I wouldn't have expected the flavor to match the aroma, but it kinda does. I don't love it, but I certainly don't hate it. It's fruity (more plum), it's saccharine, it's tea-like, it's toffee-like, and it still reminds me of seaweed...or some other exotic leafy green. A hint of brown sugar too.

Texturally, an utterly smooth, slick, gentle feel. Leans toward the thin side.

So...in a style category that I often find alluring and sometimes a little hard to put a finger (tongue?) on, Angelique is one of the most unique Dubbels of them all. Certainly not world-class, but one I want to revisit again, preferably at the source, in an attempt to decipher just what the heck they're going for here. It's one I won't soon forget, though I'm not sure I'd pick it up again. Would definitely go for their Mystique again in a second, though...

Aroma of malts and slighty funk no hops detected.
Slightly sour at first then a solid maltiness sets in with yeast overtones, finish is dry.
Easy to drink, I'll have another for sure

I had picked this one up a couple months ago because I was curious after seeing the abundance of bottles in the store while I was out looking for other stuff. Figured it would be an interesting dubbel, as I had never heard of the brewery before. Poured into my standard, non-flared tulip glass.

A: Produces a deep ruby hue. There is little to no head, despite the only moderate gravity of the beer, even when I pour it right down the center of the glass, like a red wine. No lacing to speak of.

S: Lots of stuff going on in the nose. I can make out a definite caramel aroma, as well as a big fruity character. This is made up largely of plums and figs, but there is also an Amaretto-like aroma...almonds. Very nicely proportioned.

T: Caramel and dark fruits give way to a very nutty flavor contributed by the almond extracts. Followed by lighter flavors of fruit, maybe apricot? These combine with caramelized sugars, and give way to the finish which is comprised mainly of bitter chocolate and a slight alcohol warmth.

M/D: Slightly thin and a little bit flatter than I would have like,d, but still enjoyable. The complexities of the aromas and tastes really make this beer what it is. It is a bit too sweet, and the alcohol a bit too evident, but the layers of the flavor are what really stand out about this beer.

Bottle: Poured a deep copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of lightly fruity ester with some sweet Belgian malt. Taste is also dominated by some lightly sweet Belgian malt with some subtle fruity ester. Body is about average with good carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Not sweet enough for the style with body too watery and lacking character makes this a quite boring beer.

Pours a sweet ruby and medium brown color, but with no head?!?!?! Scant bubbling dos not helps matters. Malty aroma of caramelized cherries and a little plum. The taste starts toasted malt and caramelized fruit. The palate is a just the right amount of dry. But this beer is a bit too bland for the style.
