When I see "Product of Belgium" in a beer label, my pulse quickens and an immediate Pavlovian drool reflex begins. Unfortunately, this particular product of the ol' country did not measure up to my lofty expectations....flat and overly sweet and likely to create a substantial headache in my estimation...still bad Belgian still better than most of what you'll find at you local "stop and rob"

bottle from 2009 seems to be at its peak right now, mellow and complex, minimally stale, and just complex and alive on the yeast still. its dark mahogany color from the bottle with a quick settling just off white head, looks thick and mature. the aroma has a lot of dried fruit, a medicinal quality, and a ton of belgian yeast character, estery and distinctive, but also a little funky. i always like the yeast in beer from de proef, whatever the beer is, i feel like its a detail they pay close attention to, and i like that a lot. in this case it has dried apple notes, raisin, anise, tea, and white pepper attributes, but also a light funk that may be a product of its age, but i really like what it adds. a big rich malt base to this, but it is way less sweet overall than a lot of quad types. more bready and baked than sugary and caramelized, really nice with the yeast here. the alcohol strength is really well hidden too, this drinks a lot easier than it should. what a treat to get to drink this vintage rarity at the bull and bush christmas party! this is brilliant with the age on it, a textbook quad in a lot of ways, not quite as carbonated as i usually like my belgian styles to be, but its hard to be critical of anything here, its just exceptional beer!

750 ml bottle with cork & cage seal.
Poured with a hazy, dark mahogany body topped by a thin tan head that was surprisingly durable and capable of leaving sheets of lacing.
This has a lightly sweet front end and a moderately bitter finish.
Rich, complex flavor with hints of dried plums, dates, raisins, faint spices and dark bread.
Full, smooth body with some alcohol heat.

A beautiful 1 1/2 finger head that stays for a while. A rich looking dark caramel color. A rich malty, yeasty and sweet smell. The flavor is creamy and wonderful....chocolatey caramel malts....The hint of roasted figs or plums...and a slightly peppery finish. The finish comes off as a little bitter like in a oak barrel aged way....Just enough carbonation here to make the finish nice, but it isn't dry--very much leaves a creamy, but spicy, tiny bubble finish. This is distinctly potable.

Super dark brown; smallish but stubborn head of tannish foam. With lacing. Smells roasty, abundant aromas of caramel malt and dark pitted fruit, a wee bit of vanilla. Leather. Taste matches but the vanilla is more upfront. Alcohol hidden so well which goes well with the smooth as silk mouthfeel. Call me weird but I reckon this is superior to the Chimay Blue. such a nice drop.

First pour into a chalice, second pour into an oversized wine glass. Sweet, dark fruit as it warms, cloyingly sweet and you will notice a sharp contrast if you chill it at normal refrig temps first. Nice compare/contrast as I almost prefer this one when it's colder. A bit thin and a tad too sweet even for me but solid nonetheless.

Pours a very dark brown, a bit cola like. Forms a fairly decent sized tan head that sticks around for a time.
Lot of sweetness in the smell, seems mainly brown sugar, caramel, and Belgian candy sugar.
Fairly sweet up front, almost cola like in flavor. There is caramel, toffee, and candy sugar as well. It finishes a bit try with an earthy character, and some warming.
Bit thin for the style, although fairly smooth.
Not a bad beer by any stretch, but also nothing outstanding about it either. If you like a more earthy beer, this will fit your taste, but I wanted a bit more fruit flavors. Glad I tried it, but not my favorite quad.
