Pours hazy amber with huge amounts of rock solid head that recedes with tons of lacing, more like head stuck to the side of the glass. Aroma intially of fresh baked bread gives way to lots of fruit aromas, raisons, peach, sour cherry, watermelon.

Fruity sourness greats the palate, but is balanced by a starchy breadiness. Almost like drinking a fruitcake. Peppery spice up front with sour fruit at the back. Good levels of hop bitterness balance the sweetness with faint levels of grassiness, maybe a little pine. Very subtle nutty character. You can take a sip and the flavors sort of dance and change in your mouth after you swallow. Some floral notes also.

Very interesting and complex. First experience with Brett yeast in an ale and I'm definately intrigued. I hate sour ales, but there is an overall balance to this one that keeps it from being to sour for my taste. Good stuff.

High ABV keeps the drinkability down a tad, as does the overall complexity. The alcohol notes are just present enough to know its strong.

BOTTLE: Purchased in Austin, TX earlier today. Brown glass. Unbranded hood-and-wire cap over a cork. Standard De Prouf label - simple.

8.5% ABV.

Served cold into an oversized snifter. Expectations are high given Tomme Arthur's involvement. Reviewed live as a brett ale per the label.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: About 2.5cm wide. Off-white colour. Average foaminess/frothiness, thickness, and fullness. Average (2 minute) retention. Leaves sticky coating lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Copper of above average vibrance. Clean, without visible yeast particulate or hop sediment.

Appears adequately carbonated. Not a unique or special looking brew. Could appear more lively.

AROMA: Biscuity brettanomyces yeast with mild funkiness. Belgian pale malts. Floral hop character. Grassy hops. A hint of vague citrus - maybe white grapefruit? Bitter fruit rind.

Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a surprisingly hoppy Belgian beer with a modest brettanomyces presence. I don't find any farmhouse notes like straw, hay, or oak.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Follows the aroma, plus it has a healthy amount of crystal malts. Hop-forward for a Belgian, which dries out the palate unnecessarily alongside the extinguishing brettanomyces funkiness. The coarseness and dryness of this beer lends it a rough, scratchy presence on the palate that makes it drag and fatigue. More of a light, smooth, wet, refreshing mouthfeel would be ideal, and would play off the pleasant floral hop character better.

Sweetness/bitterness balance is decent but isn't quite dialed in. The rindy bitterness is tamed somewhat by the Belgian pale malt/crystal malt sweetness, but this never feels gestalt or cohesive. Build is odd, awkwardly straddling the line between Belgian brettanomyces ale and American pale ale.

Flavour duration is above average since the brettanomyces linger in the aftertaste (due to the dryness). Depth of flavour and flavour intensity are average.

Build is unconventional, but it doesn't pay off.

Overcarbonated, light to medium-bodied, and of average heft and weight on the palate. There's not a harmony of texture and taste here.

OVERALL: Drinkable to an extent, but I'm glad I'm splitting the bottle three ways. I wouldn't want to drink a whole bottle of this. Given Tomme Arthur's involvement, I hoped for far better, but ultimately it's a forgettable experiment that doesn't really shake out. Glad I tried it, but not a winning beer - or one that will impress the discerning drinker. It may have worked better with a more subtle brettanomyces presence, but I think the real problem lies in the premise, not the execution.

A: The beer is cloudy brownish yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of toffee in the nose.
T: The taste has a bit of sweetness with flavors of caramel and toffee from the malts along with notes of spices from the hops and slight hints of sourness form the brettanomyces.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a hint of dryness in the finish.
O: This beer is a lot maltier compared to other beers but this makes it very flavorful.

750 into my Duvel tulip.

Huge pillowy off white head on an aggressive pour, opaque light copper body. Great lacing on the glass, decent head retention. Nose is brett, not really getting anything else. Taste is smoked malts and slightly sour, hops are there which might be where I get some grapefruit. This would be interesting aged. Not very complex as is. Mouthfeel is okay, lack of tastes limits drinkability for me. Overall, been in my fridge a few months and not really that interesting, hops come out as it warms more, but really not one I'd seek out. Might be great with pork or chicken.

Second release.

Nose is peppery and a little funky, notes of cologne and hotel carpet, slightly buttery or toffee/creamy. Pours a nice Belgian straw color, no clarity, moderate head with fairly quick dissipation. Looks good.

Ah yes, the funky signature of Brett. This is really good. It's tart and yeasty/powdery dry. It's fruity and kind of savory (like a good meat stock). Some lemon/lemongrass notes. Lots of hops for a Belgian style beerSmells good.

. Notes of vanilla. Finishes oily with the feeling of hop resins and/or yeast funk.

Has one of the tightest balances I've ever encountered. The malt to hop to yeast equilibrium is spot-on. It's hard to describe because nothing jumps out - it's a fastidious harmony. Tastes wonderful... maybe perfect (yeah, yeah... perfect is such an extreme label, I know... could it technically be better? I'm sure, but it's damned near perfect). Feels good too.

Having just 1 glass of this beautiful beer is a wonderful experience. It's so good. I wish it was at least a semi-regular release. Many thanks to Messieurs Naudts and Tomme Arthur for the art-museum-quality beer. It's superb.

Appearance: Golden-amber in color, not quite opaque but with a good haze to it. A thick inch-high head sits atop, leaving behind rings of lace as the glass empties.

Smell: Lemon, spicy hops, very slight funk and a bit of alcohol. I was expecting a bolder aroma, but this isn't bad.

Taste: Dry pale malts, subtle tartness, some fruity esters and a big herbal hop flavor. Moderate bitterness, not a hop bomb by any means but much hoppier than most Belgian ales. A hint of citrus and mint appear in the finish. Body is medium, about average for the style, while the high carbonation compliments the dry character of the beer nicely.

Drinkability: One glass was enough, don't think I could finish a bottle.

Notes: Good but not overly impressive.

a: This was a hazy, coppery peach color. It pours with a thick, sticky, fizzy head.

s: Surprisingly strong hop aromas of grassy lemons are what I noticed first. Underneath that are layers of candied sugar or honey and some light, musty apricots and pineapple. Some peppery spices blanket everything.

t: There is a lot going on here and frankly I don't think I can do this one justice. Up front, I got flavors of slightly sweet apricots and honey. Lemony hops came next without taking over. The finish is bone dry with a lingering peppery/clove aftertaste that I didn't like.

m: Perfect. Big bodied, oily, and effervescent.

d: Aside from the aftertaste, this was a spectacular beer, well worth trying.

750ml caged and corked cracked during a BA tasting.
Thanks to rustydiamond for this in a trade.

A: Clear golden color with minimal white head. One half finger of white head.

S: Little bit funky. Had a weird perfume/ flowery smell that everyone notes but was really enjoyable. Brett does some weird stuff sometimes.

T: Sweet. Sticky. Perfume. Flowery with a nice citrus hop notes. A Slight spice from some of the yeast. Really nice and complex.

M: medium body. Low carbonation.

D: Super easy drinking. This is a weird beer in that it has so much going on. Almost too much. Would love to see how this ages when that Brett goes to town. A really great singular beer.

I enjoyed this on tap at Holy Hound in York -served chilled in a goblet.

The color is golden hazed with thick fluffy white head with fine bead and thick lace. The smell is yeasty with a fruity quality and slight hop scent in the citrus realm with mild phenolic and estery quality. The feel is tangy with spice in the feel and bitter hop texture with light sweetness and mostly dry finish with slight alcohol influence.

The taste is tangy with a light tropical flavor with slight grassy/citrus hop flavor with gentle spiciness and light strone fruit flavor with a golden plum-like element with mild malt and yeast flavor has a spice aspect with mild alcohol in the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian Pale with nice yeast and hop flavor-worth trying

OK, so it's pretty clear I'm in for an experience here. I'm going to like this, no doubt. The only question is, to what degree?

The synthetic cork wedged free with some careful coaxing. I poured from the 750ml bottle into my Duvel tulip, slightly hazed burnished gold liquid to just above the "D," solid bone-white foam the rest of the way up. This receded quickly to a thumbnail-sized cap, leaving behind a couple rings of lace.

I noticed a rush of pineapple filling the kitchen as soon as I extracted the cork. In the glass, I notice soured guava, ripe pineapple and pungent mango, a big tropical fruit-hop bill. Twinge of musty leather alerts me to the presence of Brett, though not to the extent I would have predicted.

It's been a while since I pulled the cork on a bottle of the DeProef collaboration with Jason Perkins, but I remember that one being pretty funked-out, almost sour, with some intense hop character. From the increasingly frequent sips I'm taking here, it seems that the Brett is somewhat more restrained - some pleasant leathery tones in the background, very well-integrated with the hops. Like the aforementioned collaboration, this one has an intensely flavorful hop bill - to me, the hops take center stage here. It's that mango-pineapple with a touch of pine; big, juicy hop without getting to the point of tongue-scraping bitterness. Malt here plays a supporting role, contributing some vanilla-wafer sweetness, perhaps a touch sweeter than I might have expected, but by no means cloying. A little time in the bottle, and I'm sure the Brett will have eliminated any residual sugars. It's an interesting choice we have to make with this one. Drink it fresh and enjoy the hops at the height of their glory, or age it and let the yeast do what it will? It's probably best to buy two bottles, disregarding the hit your wallet will take.

Mouthfeel, to my own personal preference, is a little thin and limp. I don't think I gave it such a hard pour as to eliminate the carbonation, but in my mouth it doesn't snap as much as some other Belgian strong pales, so I'll give it a minor point deduction.

It is going to be all too easy to finish this bottle. I'm forcing myself to take my time, yet like the best Belgian strong pales, it goes down with astonishing ease. Couple that with the inherent complexity, and you have a world-class drinker. Can you guess what I *don't* want to do? Yeah..."share this with someone" is the correct answer. This bottle is mine, all mine - get your grubby little hands off it.

A - Clear amber/orange body with moderate carbonation and one-finger white head that receded into a patchy film and left modest amount of lacing around the glass.

S - Super sweet nose with apple and apricot notes up front. Some spicy, earthy yeast and sour Brett emerges, the latter of which is pretty minimal overall.

T - Fruity flavor with lots of apple sweetness with hints of caramel and candi sugar. The Brett is pretty subtle at first, but picks up steam in the finish. Overall, the sourness is pretty mild though.

M - Medium body with a syrupy texture and pretty vigorous carbonation. Finish is mildly sour on the palate.

D - Wow! The was indeed a complex brew with lots of flavor. I was expecting more of a hop profile since Port was involved with this creation, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sweetness, fruitiness and drinkability of this Belgian Strong Ale. The addition of the Brett complemented the sweetness, making this quite a tasty affair.

750ml bottle poured into a Grottenbier glass

A – Poured a very light hazy golden amber with a full two fingers of frothy white head on the top. Very nice and slow recession finally gave way to a decent layer of lace and froth across the top that stayed with it until the bitter end. Good amount of suspension visible as well as a decent amount of carbonation could be seen streaming up towards the top.

S – The aroma was fantastic coming off of this one. A very full and bright vibrant smell, lots of yeast and light citrus aromas. Hints of fresh grass, lemon, and coriander were very apparent and gave this a very big hop nose. The underlying yeast was also quite fruity providing a nice backdrop of light grain and peach smells.

T – The taste was awesome in a word. I was quite shocked and surprised by how nice this was. It started with a nice light peach or pear flavor but was then hopped and taken out of the realm with a good deal of grapefruit and lemon flavors. This nice tart and bitter finish was beautiful. Such a light bright but yet full flavor was a really big surprise. A very fruity and hoppy Belgian, you could definitely detect Tomme’s influence here, especially in the finish.

M – Super smooth and a very nice creamy feel to it. Nice light to medium body that was accented perfectly by more then adequate carbonation and a really great smooth finish. This was solid from the first sip to the very last.

D – Almost a perfect sipper. There was really no sign of the alcohol at all and the tight flavor profile was perfect for this. Just really a nice feel with great carbonation and a bitter profile made this great for just sitting back and relaxing.

Overall I was shocked by how good this was. It was almost a perfect blend of the two styles and the west coast hop profile really shined here. It was just a great match between the two and I would love to see them do something else together soon. Great job on this I really enjoyed it and will have to go grab a couple more of them.

Poured from corked caged 750ml bottle from The Port's bottle shop back in September of last year. Have tried many times before both in bottles and on tap at Lost abbey and at the port but never reviewed until now. First of all I have to say I like this beer better in the bottle than on tap even though its a great beer no matter the source, Second with a year age on it the Brett has developed mor and some of the hops have faded but help balance it out more like a BSPA. Poured into Duvel Snifter a Hazy Golden Orange color with a white head about a finger thick with good lacing. Smell is a light brett funk, spice, sweet candi sugar amd mellow citrus scents. Taste is sweet malt mixed with lemon zest, light grass flavors, atouch of spice and phenolic compounds. Mouthfeel is light body with an active but light carbonation. This mixed with its great balance of flavors and the fact that its abv is well hidden make this not only a great drinking beer but a world class effort by two great brewers.

Pours a hazy, dark maize color. There is also suspended sediment present. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of sweet malt, hops, hint of tart malt, hint of honey, hint of wheat, slight citrus, and slight alcohol. Fits the style of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight citrus, hops, hint of roasted malt, hint of honey, and hint of sweet malt. Overall, good aroma and body, but lacking in appearance and mouth feel.

750 mL bottle, batch 2, poured into a tulip.

Careful pour leaves sediment in the bottom of the bottle and the beer is a translucent, yet clear honey amber color with a persistent slightly off white head and layers of sticky lacing. Aroma is deep and complex and as it warms up reveals different notes. Initially ripe fruit and sweetness, predominantly apple and tangy citrus. Some light spice, but the finish is more earthy and musky, strong yeast and brett funk. Body is medium-thick, with fine carbonation. The taste begins with apple and honey sweetness, and Belgian yeast. In the finish a fairly strong hop presence takes over and the brett asserts itself as the sweet is balanced by an earthier dry flavors. Very nicely balanced and rich blend of complex flavors, this is a very enjoyable beer but is a little boozy in the finish. Not sure I'll buy more at this price, but definitely worth the try.

750ml bottle purchased a Binny's a while back. Served in a Surly Darkness snifter. Batch #2.

A - A careful pour yields a finger of late-rising creamy light tan foam that settles to a near-complete cap and thick collar, but leaves behind a few spots of lace. Body is an opaque amber/cider copper color with streams of tiny bubbles throughout.

S - Large apple and toffee malt backbone, some light tropical and slightly rotten fruit funk, candi sugar, honey, grass and hay, estery yeast, and light alcohol is present. I think this bottle is pretty old, but it didn't get overly funky - just lost the hops.

T - Taste is somewhat similar, with plenty of caramel apple and brown sugar malts and a peppery yeast character, light tropical fruits, as well as a lightly sour/tart finish and bitter herb/medicinal aftertaste. Alcohol is better hidden than in the aroma.

M - Medium-full, chewy and viscous body, with light carbonation tingle. Finish is surprisingly dry for such a sweet beer, and there are plenty of residual resinous hop oils. There is some warming alcohol, but no harsh or solvent notes.

D - I suspect this was more interesting when it was hoppy and fresh, as it's now it's overly sweet with only light funk and sourness. I wish there were actual bottle dates rather than batch codes, but this is nearly three years old as far as I can tell. That being said the beer matches the description on the bottle pretty closely - I guess I just don't dig this combination of flavors. I labored through about 375ml before using the rest for cooking.

Appearance: Burnt orange amber glow that is NOT clear, this bad boy is cloudy folks and I took care to pour carefully some sediment still found its way in. Really thick head that is super pillowy and fluffy with a concentration of evil looking bubble in the center, with some of the most serious clingy sticky lacing I have ever seen.

Smell: Dry-hopping shines through with a strong aroma from the aramillo coming through as well as the brett funk. Sweet diacetyl and citrusy goodness and some floral herby notes.

Taste: WOW! this beer has so many layers of different things going on that it is just incredible... it all comes together wonderfully though. There are flavors that are subtly sweet like peach and orange and lemon peel, there are also hoppy resinous flavors that make it taste like a IIPA, but there is still that yeasty breadiness that is like a belgian pale.... There is hop juiciness and o my!!

Overall: This beer defies style designation... One of the most unique and outstanding beers I have ever had if you can find it ignore the price tag and just get it it is unbelievable.

Poured from the bottle a hazy golden orange color with a huge frothy white head.

Aroma of tropical fruits, yeast, floral and spice notes, and horse blanket. I rarely use the term 'horse blanket', but this fits it pretty well.

Tastes of tropical fruits, grape soda, candy sugar, biscuit, spices, and a touch of a sour bitterness. The alcohol is well hidden.

Medium bodied, crisp and dry, with a good amount of carbonation.

A well made Belgian Strong and one I quite enjoyed.

S- Wonderful bouquet of fruit aromas including berries, honey, pineapple, apples, lemon, some subtle bread malts and belgian yeast
T- Consistent with smell, initial taste is sweet fruits, citrus, and sugary malts, opens up to biscuit malts and finishes dry

Bottle sampled at Lost Abbey during RBSG. Pours the color of unfiltered apple juice and just as hazy. Head is soft with decent retention and nice lacing. Aroma is canned peaches with some funky brett. Flavor is yeasty with a peach syrup sweetness and a dry brett/hops finish. Alcohol is invisible. Interesting beer.

A: Pours a nice light copper color with a finger of foam that fades slowly. Some nice lacing is left on the glass.

S: Slight hops, a hint of citrus and resin. The dominant is that Belgian aroma, the funk from Brett, and a bit of dough in it as well.

T: Some citrus, a bit of other fruits, a bit of funk, some spice, and more in this. It's fairly complex, and the hops are pretty damn nice. This is a subtle and complex brew, as you find more and more flavor as you keep sipping on it. A little bit of warmth from the alcohol at the end, but not much at all. Damn tasty.

M: Well carbonated, and has a nice crisp finish that lasts for a while.

D: This is a well-crafted brew. Subtle and complex, with a wonderful blend of Belgian and American cultures. This is a great brew. Sessionable? Probably not, but enjoyable for what it is.
