Canned 9/23/19; drank 10/7/19 @ the Yarchives.
Cloudy orange/yellow appearance.
A violent pour yielded a big white head; frothy lace.
Banana, clove, mild orange peel & faint dry grass notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Dry wheat & mild clove flavors; this tastes more like a Saison than an American IPA.
Permanent pass on this one.

On tap at Maria's, the home source for Marz. I was surprised by the color and was told "it's a brown IPA." Not a hoppy brown ale; a brown IPA. A first time for that but Marz has never been one to adhere to stylistic constraints. This has fairly high bitterness with big pine + citrus and some woody backnotes. Not the malty notes expected. Clean and very drinkable for the darker tone.

Good to see Marz hitting the southwest 'burbs. Lumpen pours pretty dark for an IPA with lots of caramel and polished copper tones. A slight haze runs throughout. Carbonation rushes to the, still darker than expected, ecru head. The foam is dense and instantly craggy, like a dollop of meringue on the surface. Impressive retention.
The nose is pungent and vibrant. Handfuls of candied citrus is first to leap from the glass while a strong undercurrent of pine and resinous qualities add to the depth. I don't smell near as much malt as I expected, with the color and all, but there is a sturdy light caramel and bready backbone. Makin' my mouth water.
The flavor profile falls in line with the nose on this guy. Caramelized sugars and bready maltiness lay down the base while the hop combo does its thing. The hopping comes strong, and finishes, with pine. Resinous notes rise and fall while the candied citrus peel is simply a whisper with some soft lingering notes. The pine steals the show.
The body feels like it's got some viscosity up front but the bubbles quickly erase that thought. Instead it becomes light to moderate in body with good movement and a bone dry finish that really accentuates the already sturdy bitterness. Drinkability is good.
Lumpen is a bitter beast with a solid, tasty malt base. The mouthfeel is spot on and the drinkability high. With that said there are so many good IPAs on the market at a cheaper price point that it's hard to justify picking this one up again. Lumpen is a good IPA, a very good IPA actually, but for the price I'd pass in the future. Reach for The Machine next time.
