With layer upon layer of complexity, the decadence of chocolate cake oozes out of the Moody Tongue Brewing Company in the form of imperial stout. A long winter's nap inside bourbon barrels and copious amounts of chocolate come in a reckless package of roast, decadence and booze.

Dark as espresso, the onyx black ale crowns with a mocha whipped foam before shedding its irresistible scent of dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel and coffee for a strong suggestion of fudge, tiramisu and kahlua. Lavishly sweet maltiness unleashes its chocolate fudge, caramel, brown sugar and roasted nuttiness broadly across the tongue.

And as the stout seeps deeper and deeper into the tastebuds, those tastes of chocolate cake only rise greater. Its rich viscosity cakes on the mouth with cocoa, caramel, vanilla, walnut, espresso roast and a bold and woodsy bitterness. Bourbon flavor grows in the finish as their own coconut, caramel, vanilla and oak spices play on the late palate with spice, sherry and refined whisky.

Decadent, rich and full, the ale is kept from cloying sensations with its premiere booze spice that thins the texture and offsets sweetness late in finish for light reprieve from the lavish nature of malt and chocolate. A long and savory aftertaste suggests that this isn't a beer to pair with dessert, rather to replace dessert altogether.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 12/30/19.

Pours near black and opaque, with no head and no lacing. Aromas of bourbon, roasted malt, chocolate, raisins, some caramel and tobacco, light coconut and char. The flavors each really stand out- bourbon, chocolate, caramel, coconut, raisins, malt. Smooth, a very good full body on the lighter side, appropriately carbonated.

This is really well done. The Four Roses barrels are excellent, lots of expressive aromas and flavors- especially the chocolate. Very enjoyable.

12 oz with Lisa at home. Bought in Charleston for $12 I think. Really good but pretty hot.

12oz bottle, 2018 vintage, poured into a 12oz stemmed wine glass.

The beer pours a deep jet black color, thick and viscous with a thin tan head, about a half a finger high with moderate retention and minimal lacing. The aroma is great, tons of rich dark chocolate, charred oak, smooth bourbon, coconut, light caramel and toffee with a nice rich grain character and a lingering vanilla quality. The flavors are very good, chocolate upon chocolate with a nice dark bitterness, warm bourbon barrel, strong charred oak, toasted coconut, spice, caramel and toffee with vanilla and a nice grainy finish. The mouthfeel is good, coating with a medium body, thick and smooth with a warm finish.

Verdict: A nice barrel aged stout from Moody Tongue. The chocolate qualities are excellent but the barrel is really well done here. I wish the body was a bit thicker but this beer is definitely still up to the task. Balanced, expressive and super rich without being cloying and over the top.

Bottled November 2017; drank 1/1/18 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small, noisy tan head which quickly dissipated; almost no lace.

Dark chocolate, bourbon head, burnt caramel, mild fudge & faint raspberry notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Caramel, bourbon heat & dark chocolate flavors up front; mild oak & faint raspberry notes on the finish.

A bit boozy right now; who knows, maybe a year or two could turn this into a luxurious beast. Regardless, it's good now.

we actually had this with the actual 12 layer cake they serve in here, and were sort of underwhelmed by both a little bit, not to say they arent very good, but for the price and how hard they appear to be trying, they could be better than they are. its shiny black in the glass but not nearly as viscous as i thought it might be, smelling very boozy with notes of dark baking chocolate, espresso, and licorice. there is a weird thinness to this though, a lack of malt depth and weight, so strange for this high abv, just a different approach to the stout altogether i reckon, almost more like a spirit than a beer, fusel but refined, cognac-esque. i taste some chocolate, faint coconut, licorice and cigar, faint anise and oak, but not a ton of barrel here and not that much malt character, chocolate malt and a little roast, but this feels strangely thin for what it is. its also somehow sort of simple too, i expected more flavor, like 12 layers of it to be exact, and while its tasty, it doesnt really live up to the name. some bourbon at the end but even this element is minimal. i like that its not too sugary, but this one left a little bit to be desired.
