Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Black bodied, with a lace sheet. Medium mouthfeel, licorice and mollasses dominate. A little sourish. A mild smokey and complex aroma, but unfortunately the taste is rather plain and does not live up to this aroma. OK drinkability.

A: Pours mahogany in color with some ruby glints. The head is off-white and has a good retention.
S: Nose is mainly caramel, very sweet, with also plum, grapes and detectable alcohol.
T: The taste follows the nose, with brown sugar, caramel, dried fruits, very sweet, a bit too much actually.
M: Quite light bodied, with a somehow watery finish.
O: Quite a complex brew, given the ABV, but a bit unbalanced, a bit too sweet in particular.

Arrives a deep brown, more like a porter than your typical brown ale. No light penetration. Decent head of tan but retention is weak dissipating within a minute to a scattered film though there is some weak lace.
Smell is malt, an indeterminate fruit, some light cardboard and just a hint of hops. Balance is good.
Taste is more of the same with the addition of a slight medicinal note as well. Balance is pretty good and the overall flavor is mild.
Despite the name this comes across more as a slightly more full bodied brown ale than anything else. Seems a long way from a Scottish ale. Effervescence is well restrained, body is medium full. A slight coating on the palate and tongue detracts slightly from the experience. Hard to rate this, I vacillated between rating on the beer itself and how it relates to the style. Ended up in between.
